My neighbor gave me some black walnuts. That was very nice of him.

The Walnut trees grow wild in his yard. Has anyone ever given you wild food before like berries or anything? If you had walnuts, what would you make with them? I think once they're pealed and then cracked, there will only be a half a cup of nutmeats. There is a lot of protection on them, waste, not much nut. They smell good with that outter green coating on them. They smell like a cross between a lemon and a lime, I think. Although maybe more like a lime. They smell so good. Have you ever had black walnuts? Have you ever did anythng with nuts like pecans or walnuts from scratch with the outter green ball part, hard covering and then finally the nut? I've never had them complete from falling off the tree before. Usually just buy them in the store or if someone gives them to me, they've done all the work first.

I remember helping my grandmother picking up black walnuts. They do smell good. Good idea to wear gloves when dealing with them because it will dye your hands. No, there isn't really alot of meat to the nut after the outer part and shell is gone. But they are good. Infact I used the outer portion once to dye my hair! And my grandmother put walnuts in banana bread and all manner of things after that. I have also gone to pick potatoe kulls after the trucks took what they wanted from the fields. We got alot of potatoes of all sizes.

I am using henna now for dye. My son says that it smells much better than chemicals. I could perhaps grind some walnut shells or husks to add to it if I get tired of the red. HMMMMMMMMM

That was nice of him. I have never had black walnuts before. I would imagine that they would be bitter tasting though. Maybe you could make some kind of bread with them. Maybe you should do some research online to find out exactly how you're supposed to shell them and you could get some ideas on what to do with them.

They have way more intense or dramatic flavor than English walnuts. I don't consider them bitter. I hope you get a chance to try some in the future. They are wonderful in bread.

I absolutely love black walnuts. Back when I was a kid, my dad and I would go into the woods and collect these walnuts. Ironically the town where my children went to elementary school, has a Black Walnut festival every October. We went once, and because the goodies were so expensive, that we never went back. Then a few years ago, I noticed that in walking distance, a black walnut tree. I brought some home and was by a neighbor they use to put their black walnuts on the roof until the green turned black. Of course I didn't do it, and now that I think about it, it won't matter. Because I placed them next to the fence and the squirrels got them all, but they also would have gotten the ones on the roof too, so I have no place to put them until I can clean them up.. Now, how do I like black walnuts? Never heard of Owls pickled ones, but wouldn't mind trying it. But I love them for one, just plain. I love black walnut fudge and I'd probably put them in everything I put English walnuts in, including chocolate chip cookies..

Oh it is writer, it isn't good for us, you know, like any other fudge, it is packed full of sugar, (I won't go with the artificial sugar-free stuff) and fattening, but it is really good...I never made it before, but if you can find a place that makes this fudge, it is worth trying it out..

We used to have a fudge place on the road to visit my husband's relatives 2 hours away. You could buy fudge by the pound and they had twenty different kinds, but they're out of business now. So many neat places out of business. It's upsetting.

Hey you got a nice neighbour there, congratulations! Here the japanese give you presents when they move in or move out, they never go away without proper goodbye, I think it is a beautiful tradition.

I think it is a wonderful tradition. Some places do help people when they move in with food here, too.

I have never heard or saw any black walnuts, specielly not eated them, cause I cannot eat walnut, but it was very nice of him to actully give away some "black walnuts". I am googling it right after I posted this comment! Do you like cross of lemon or lime? And yes, nuts are not so much to eat, only protection. I have never eated a nut. Only with nuts in, like nut créme. I don't know if they have those in the UK. Have a great day and happy mylotting!

The outter hull or whatever it is, that's for protection. The nut inside is for eating. I hope you're able to have nuts some day. We eat a lot of peanut butter which is a ground nut here in the USA.

I always wanted to eat nuts, but I cannot. When I eat nuts I cannot breath. That's not so funny. Maybe some day I can.. I really hope so..

I'm sorry you are so allergic to them. I hope you can eat lots of other tastey food. Yes, I do like the smell of them. They smell so fresh and wonderful.
