How do you feel when a friend started a similar discussion like yours?

This has happened to me twice. I started a discussion about using the myLot codes more and then after a few days, one of my friends started a similar discussion. And then I started about a Filipino changing his face just to look like Superman and after a while, another friend started a similar discussion.
I guess we are all free to start any discussion we like but I felt a little... maybe offended or disappointed. I mean, I know we do not have notifications ON for all of our friends so we could not be notified of the discussions all our friends make, but don't they at least check the "discussions friends started"? Or maybe, use the myLot search engine in searching for similar discussions. I do that for topics that are very specific like with the Filipino guy turned Superman.
Anyway, has this ever happened to you? How did you feel?

Hmmm I not feel bad because I know my friend's view will be different from me and their thinking will also different. Like in English one word meaning may be many the same in discussion we can create lots of discussion on one interest.

hi secretbear no as I do not think anyone can duplicate incidents from my own life which is what I use to make most of my discussions with, that or on some facet of mylot.None of us have the same exact life experiences so I am pretty safe there.Living here in a retirement center I have a lot of fuel for discussions so seldom run into any duplications.I have had little help in the mylot search engine for duplicate discussions. I just post and have not ever had a duplicate at all.

You are right auntie no duplication is here I feel different people different idea on one interest or topic. But contents are changed and ideas are changed. I started full week discussion only on single interest like eating, bathing, talking, business, Computer etc. and this is my unique way in mylot.

Only once and I don't know if it was by accident or not. She was kicked off mylot shortly after that...but she never found out why! I felt a little like she was a copycat....not real happy about it but with all the discussions that are started everyday it's hard not to have a couple that are just alike!

I know, right! There's too many of us here in myLot and there are people with the same wavelength as ours, but at least we can somehow avoid making discussions similar to that of those with our friends.

Hello Secretbear,
Can I ask a question, is this just the first and second time that your friend started a similar discussion? I think having a duplicate posts in this site would really be possible. With a lot of members and some would even have the same mind set with you. I think I remember experiencing this one, of course, I would be offended at first but then again, if I know I am the original one, I would be proud with my work because someone became interested with what I wrote and even tried to make his/her own discussion with that. Sometimes, some of us don't use the search button as the site is so big that there are a lot of discussion. I, would use the search button sometimes, but when I just want to post what I want, I would no longer use it. So, sometimes, I am not sure if I have a duplicate discussion or not. Just don't mind them, as long as you know that you are not the copy cat you can still put your heads up high.
Enjoy your day and Happy mylotting red_amethyst

It's the first time for two friends. I understand all the things you said, I know those really happen, people with the same mindset and experience would sometimes start similar discussions. The first time it happened, I tried to understand it. The second time, well, it just got me to a point that I could not help but be frustrated. ^^

I have seen a couple similar to what I have started although I must admit it was sometime before they started their topic so it was really coincidental on their part. I was okay with it as I was fully informed about the topic so I was easily able to respond to the discussion.
There is really no rule with similar topics as many of us can think the same. If it were duplicate then that would not be allowed. I guess if it happens way too frequently and or repeatedly then I would ask the member why they are doing as such.
It really has not happened too frequently to mine but I guess I really did not feel bad. But you are right we should be courteous at least to our listed friends and not start similar type of discussions.

It would probably have been different if those people who started similar discussions were not in my friend list. I guess what made it more frustrating was the fact that their notifications for my started discussions were turned off so they did not see my discussions and created similar discussions unknowingly.

Yes it did happen to me, I am just not sure whether they have intentionally copied the discussion or not. But as for my short experience here, since I am so new here ^^... I started a discussion and then the next day one of my friend would start a similar topic, though the title was changed, the topic has the same thoughts it was saying.
I feel like -- Huh??? Eyebrows raised and then forget it. LoL. Although I could say that somehow I have maybe done the same thing too, but never realized it because I was not friends of those I have similar topics and they have posted a similar topic maybe long time ago. I usually find it out after posting the topic and below some related tags would be displayed. Sometimes I do use the search engine too to check whether a similar and new discussion like what I'm thinking was already posted. Other times, I don't coz it eats up my time =)

It would not matter to me if these people who started similar discussions were not my friends. But they were my friends and that's the main reason why I was a bit bothered.

I think this is fine for me. After all, it is too difficult to think out an unique discussion and most of the discussions here are similar with each other. But the content is different. For example, when Steve Jobs was gone, there were many discussions about him at that time. But they didn't copy each other. Great minds think alike:)

No, fortunately not. But I would not be happy if one of my friends came up with a very similar idea to mine on myLot or on any other websites. It would be less than polite and unfair from a faithful friend.
Please let me share a short story with you. I work for an international company where the workload is high and we have to do lots of overtime before quarter ends. Before the last quarter ended we were still working in the office at night. It was almost 10 o'clock p.m. One of my colleagues told us she would upload "We're the champions" on Facebook immediately when she got finished. But when she got there, this hit had already been uploaded by someone else from her team.
I was truly sorry for her.

i think it would be a bit annoying
i have seen some people here who are highly active in a discussion then after a few hours they themselves create a similar discussion with no new idea just different words
it a bit annoying as we already know him and he has copied the same idea of ours but other than the topic if the discussion starter has a different opinion then i guess there should not be any problems

So I guess there's a problem since their opinion was the same with mine.

This has happened to me loads of times and i will not worry about it when it happens.I tend to just type a discussion without even looking to see if anyone has started a discussion that is like mine, as there are too many discussions that have been started over the years since this site has been running.

I agree. I do that, too especially when I'm posting about something from my own life experience. But with specific topics like news or something, I thought it's easier to avoid making similar discussions about those kinds of topics and especially among friends.

I always inspired new discussion by discussions answer..
When I see other started my discussion I feel bad, because I need thinking new discussion, sometimes new discussion don't came to me. Last 2 weeks I can't thinking new discussion, because I think all what can I think are boring and nobody don't write me...
So now I just write answers...

Try to be mindful of interesting things or odd things or even ordinary things that happened to you and made an impact to you. You can make discussions out of those things.

Honestly, I don't even know if this has happened to me, or if I did it to anyone else accidentally. I mean, it can really be hard to tell if someone did that on purpose. I think these people who started exactly the same discussion as yours cannot think of something new, or are just trying to ask additional information about the subject. Of course, they can also do that by simply replying to your thread. I don't know. I just hope I will not be one of them, or am I?

You're not one of them. I just try to understand them, they probably encountered the same thing and wanted to share it. But it's clear that they turned off their notifications for me. If they didn't, they would have seen my discussions first and they would have avoided starting discussions of the same idea and topic.

There were a times here in mylot that I always get a message from them telling me that my response, comment or discussion I started was deleted due to multiple posting. If so happen that you are the first poster than the other one, then mylot will delete the other discussion.
Just remember to search first for a discussion before you post your idea here in mylot and I hope that the other user do the same too!

Let us welcome everyone who post a discussion of their own. It can be an offset to what it is that we have posted before but, is being presented in a different context, consider it to be just okay.
It is true that there are some discussions here that are just offsets or offsprings of some discussions which have been responded to. Feel happy about it. It means that the topic you have posted has reeled the minds of other mylotters to deep thinking or could have touched them in a different way.
Feel offended and cry foul if, somebody makes a copy paste of your discussion though and notify mylot admin about it immediately for their appropriate action.
