Banning eating while driving

I just heard on the news that one Illinois suburb is trying to get a ban on eating while driving, making it illegal to eat and drive. I don't think this is a good law personally. I eat while driving all the time, if I didn't I would not have time to eat sometimes. I also find it helps to keep me awake and from getting bored while driving. What do you think about banning eating while driving?

I think it is a good idea not to eat and drive. I do it, however, from time to time. I do not think it is a good idea for the government to be our mamas and daddies. I believe people need to be educated to the problems, and then make good choices. I think law enforcement has better things to do than pursue people for eating and driving. On the other hand, if an accident occurs and it can be shown that one or both parties involved were eating and driving then a ticket should be issued for distracted driving. I had a friend who was hit by a driver eating a bowl of oatmeal one time. I also have a friend who popped a peppermint in her mouth and it went into her airway. She pulled over in a park before she lost consciousness and gave herself the Heimlech maneuver by pushing the steering wheel into her diaphragm. She quit eating anything in the car. On the other hand, a diabetic who is driving and has a sugar drop needs to eat a piece of candy quickly or have a sip of juice or soda.

I do think people need to use good judgement while eating in the car. They should only eat things that can be eaten with one hand and things that are not messy or that need to be held on to like a messy burger or taco. Also trying to manage a bowl while eating is pretty dangeous. The actual food should remain on the car surface and not in the hands except when going directly from surace to mouth, holding on to food and eating it is not a good idea. It also might be a good idea to say that someone should have had their drivers license for at least a year but that is pushing it, and like you said we don't need the government to be our parents and watch everything we do.

@ GardenGerty - well said. The more laws we have, the less reason for having good judgement because the law overrides that regardless of the situation.

@Hatley, I have known very brittle diabetics, who start out okay and crash quickly. I had a pastor who was required to keep candy in his glove box at all times. That is why I cannot see banning eating in cars. I have a niece who works out of town and is also very brittle. Interesting side note, she rescued a stray cat and if her sugars fall too much while she is sleeping he will get on her and wake her up. She really should eat a good protein snack before laying down, though.

I don't usually eat and drive, but if I should want to or have to, I want the freedom to make my own decisions. While I can see the reasoning behind banning eating while driving, it's another direct interference in our freedom. Where will that end?

Eating while driving,Talking on mobile while driving these all things can cause accidents as when driving there should be concentration on only driving,There can be massive accidents which we never ever expect or even think.Should go by law.

I have done it plenty of times and of course I do try to make sure it is not something that will distract me while driving. I mean anything that requires sitting at a table and maybe too sloppy to eat while driving I definitely do not do. I am not sure that banning will get all to stop and or if it is a good idea. I can't see me not eating a breakfast bar for instance while I am driving and or drinking my coffee. I guess one really just needs to apply good judgment and it just seems that the laws are being enforced without priority. Pretty soon it will not be allowed to speak to passengers while driving.

i never really eat while driving, but i think eating is different than texting, we eat using mouth while we texting using our eyes which is crucial when we are driving, so i don't think eating would be something that can cause an accident...

I think it depends on what you are eating I am always telling a friend of mine it is dangerous while eating a burger while driving and of course he doesn't listen to me but just a few months ago his wife was waiting to do a right hand turn when a fella eating a burger ran into the back of her, apparantly hot sauce ran down his arm and he lost concentration but still my friend eats burgers while he drives so I think it depends some foods I think would be ok.

anything that prevents you from taking your eyes off the wheel is dangerous, if you can eat and still keep your eyes on the road then I think it would be okay, or stop somewhere to eat.

Some people can multi-task and drive and eat at the same time. Some people can talk on their phones and drive at the same time. Some people cannot. My brother once made a comment that he can talk on his phone, eat a burger, and steer his car with his knee better than some people can drive with no distractions. I know he was being sarcastic when he said it, but I agree with him. So... I can see where this law would be a good thing, but I can also see where this would be annoying to the ones who CAN manage to handle it.

I think that is pretty dumb! Why don't they focus on something important like banning texting or talking on the phone while driving. People eat while driving quite often. I can see how it can be somewhat distracting, but I don't think it is that big of a deal! Did something bad happen because someone was eating while driving?

There was a famous case here in the UK a couple of years ago where a Woman eating an apple at the wheel set off a police investigation that cost way over what her fine would have been had they simply stopped her and ticketed her..Apparently they thought She was using her phone while driving...Food or phone, the charge is driving while not being in full control of the vehicle...basically,if you don't have both hands on the wheel,it's an offence...

My parents eat while driving when we're on long trips and they've never had a problem.

I don't encourage banning it but avoiding eating during driving may cause disturbance to your concentration on driving..Sometimes it's okay when you don't have time for eating but not all the time. Drive with your friends to be awake while driving...

i like to think of my self as a responsible driver. Doesn't everybody?i never text when im behind the wheel.I use the speaker phone on the rare occasions when i talk on the phone and i always check my mirrors and signals before i change lanes but when it comes in eating when driving im guilty..=P

I was just thinking about this and why people are not allowed to talk on the phone when you asked. I was watchin this show on NAT GEO called 'Test Your Brain'. I learned that the brain is an extremely lazy thing. It wouldn't bother multitasking. Instead what it would do is instantly switch from one task to another. So it wouldn't concentrate on both eatin and drivin. It would either'EAT' or 'DRIVE'. So it is a good idea I guess.

A programme I saw dealing with distractions while driving and how they affect us had a Police Driving instructor negotiating a slalom course of cones in a car..The guy was such a professional,he made it look easy...Then the presenter had him do the thing all over again, only this time counting aloud,(something like counting down from 100 in 3's,I think it was..)..concentrating on the counting made him lose focus on his driving, and several cones got crunched as his driving got more erratic... It just goes to show,no matter how good a driver,You cannot afford to get sidetracked from control of a vehicle..

Do they have laws banning Cellphone use while handheld in that area at present? If they consider Cellphone usage on the road as a hazard to being in control of your car, wrestling a burger combo meal with sauce dripping on your lap while rolling along is sure going to grind their gears too...I know drive thru restaurants are common enough, but the idea is you take the order home or take a pit stop and eat,not set up a picnic table in the car on the road for a feed as you drive...If You're tired or bored while driving,You're not alert to what's going on,a sure sign you need a break from driving or a nap,not something else to distract your attention...

I think that would really stink. Eating helps keep me a wake when I am driving for long distances. When we are on vacation and driving a long distance I would not be able to do it without snacks to keep me occupied. Of course my wife helps me out she does all the opening and things like that, that could take my mind off of driving, but I need my snacks to keep me awake otherwise the road would just become one big old blur.

i think it would be best that drivers concentrate or focus on the driving. it is more dangerous to have the consequences brought by inattention while driving than not being able to eat for a while and do it later.

It is probably not the wisest decision to eat while driving. It takes your concentration away from driving. It can be that momentary distraction of taking a bite of food that take your attention away from where it needs to be,.

I think as long as it is something that can be eatten with one hand then it is fine. I personally cannot eat and druve at the same time unless it is something like a ganola bar, lol. I tend to drop stuff off my sandwich all over myself, so I try not to eat and drive. I do drink soda from Sonic a lot when I drive, specially if I'm driving long distances.
