Especially when you are traveling overseas.
I believe you need to understand that your value for money packages only apply at your locality and does not apply when you are abroad or in other states within your country.
A woman had to learn this lesson the hard way, not forgetting an expensive one costing her U$201,005.44. Though, this true story had a fair ending, I hope that you will not be in the same situation as well.
So, when you use your phone abroad or in other states, the rates are very expensive for both your calls and data access i.e. internet access. So, know your phone's functions well and switch off your auto roam on your phone before you regret it.
Be safe.

Ahoh, before reading your reminder, I thought there're this kind of problems only in China. My hometown is in the northern China, while I'm currently working in the Southern,of course the current GSM service is provided in the working area. So every time when I have a long holiday and back to hometown, it'll cost much more money to make a call, but the same cost rate for the wap access. So I'd just communicate with others by SMS when i'm back home, while only make a call under the emergency.

hi, Ben, I'm under impression that you're right, in China, the phone rate is greatly different, especially in southern China. MSN or other web communicatin can help save money for you.

I was completely shocked when I heard this one too. You can practically buy a house with that bill. Anyways, I was glad to hear that the bill was reduced to only $2,500. Even though that's still a large sum it's better than what it was before. I don't do a lot of traveling these days but I know better than to take my phone with me. I'm not much of a phone user anyways so when I do travel far from home the phone stays home or is off the whole time. It's just there in case of emergencies.

saizo6,
In the past, our mobile phones are basically used for calls only and their function is much lesser compared to the new models today.
Functions like Pushmail, MSN, GPS, Facebook, Twitter and many others all have the capability of running in the background and to keep users connected phones are programmed to pick up connections via the cellular networks or WiFi. When we travel and do not set the device to Manual for roaming then our phones will just automatically "grab" the most available network in the air without letting us knowing. As far as connectivity is concern, everybody is a happy user but when that phone taps on a foreign carrier the cash till is ringing as well. In the end, we have a shocked and angry customer.
Switching off the phone or SIM cards to local may be a good solution but it is still dollars and cents when we use any of the services.

Yes a little lack of attention can make us lose huge amount for nothing at all. Many have this experience. Its a great reminder for everybody. It often happens because of absence of paying attention to while touring abroad. It comes much cheaper to have a local telephone pre-paid card with accessibility to call to ones own people and country. While these local calling cards charge you such a silly amount, losing such a huge amount... really makes you feel the pain

Yes. I have also learnt to switch off my phone' auto roaming. Because in the even we forget to turn it off, we'll even accidently use the internet and then we'll be charged for it.
THat's the problem with most of our phones nowadays. Many of us use smartphones and therefore, this is a problem many of us will face.
For me, 2 years ago, i called up my mobile operator and requested for them to permanently turn off my data roaming. At least, no accidents for me

I have enough trouble with mobile issues in Adelaide, so I certainly don't want problems overseas.
I moved homes three months ago, and now my mobile carrier ghas very poor reception in my area.
My daughter signed up to the same carrier as myself, as the one she was using, upped her bills, and couldn't explain why.
I'm sorry I got a bit off the track with your discussion, but it just reminded me of all the hasles we have been having with mobiles and landlines.

Hiya sky,
Thanks for that as we also turn off our phones when we are near to the border of France we just switch them both off and they donĀ“t get turned on again till we get back into Spain.
Someone we know however ran up a Bill for eight thousand Euros but they did give him the money back in the end as it was really abusive what they had done but it did take them about three or four years to pay him every cent back as he was in the right and they were in the wrong.
I thought I would add that story as its nice for the consumer to win over the big brother Telephone Company.
The Judge said no way mate you have to pay this man all his money back he he he.
I was delighted I bet their Pockets felt so much lighter afterwards too.
As they are always into getting every cent they can out of you.
I am moving House and they keep pestering me to keep this Telephone Number we have here plus the other one we have there and I keep telling them no way Jose (grin).
This Week they are being real pests ringing all Day on and off.
I shall be glad when the phone is taken offline so I can get some peace and quiet about it all I have enough to cope with moving.
That was some Phone Bill it would have floored me too.
At the moment my Mobile is on a Five Euro Prepaid Card and the more they keep pestering the longer it will stay like that too. (grin).xxx
