Simple joys of babies / my one year old grandson

Recently I was discussing about the delightful new toys available these days when someone made one valid response--“We buy expensive toys for babies but we would be the ones playing with those .Right now . they would get fascinated by brooms and slippers.” Very small children are fascinated by brooms, slippers, broken plastic, torn envelopes and odd little things. Their faces are just lit as though they have found some unheard of treasures when they play with these. But how sweet they are! They find joy in the simplest of things. Their needs are so simple. It is so heartwarming to see the delight on their faces with the simplest thing possible. I am sure you will have other experiences of seeing children play with the oddest thing possible. Please share yours . Do you think there is a moral in this[not in playing with broken plastic but in the simplicity ]?

Yes,tushavi, do not worry about your English. There are many members, including me, who are not native English speaker, i.e., English is not first language for many of us. Even those who do, they do make mistakes here and there and they are not perfect each other. There are some members who are using myLot to learn English. And your English is great, nothing to feel ashamed of. Thank you for your kind words regarding my response. I like that you like it. You made my day.

Yes, I am a big proponent of simplicity and I think that more children today need to have the opportunity to play outdoors and invent their own toys. Unfortunately in the state the world is in today that is not safe for people in many places.

Children these days rarely play outdoors; they have such pressure in schools and added pressure from parents that they hardly play. Moreover, the outdoor environment is so pollluted in our city it is rather difficult. Only parks should help us solve the problem.

You are quite right. I made such kind of mistake in the past. When my child was still a baby, I couldn't help buying him expensive toys. But actually he preferred to play with some very simple stuff and found it fun. The price will never be a measure to judge the toys for the children. So today I learned from it. I will buy some toys which are worthy and he will be interested in it rather than I like it. I love China

Yeah! Whta you say is very valid youless. We have to think from the child's point of view and buy things thta would interst him rather than buy what appeals to us.Thanks for dropping by and hope your precious son is fine.

I discovered the same thing when my daughter was a toddler. An expensive toy would be pushed aside and its packaging would be the toy of the day! I think that it proves that children’s’ needs are not as complicated as we may make them out to be; simple toys and a great deal of love is all they need. I am certain your little grandson is a pure delight!

Oh yes Paula! He is a pure delight. Very sweet. And the needs of children are so basic, just food at the proper time, and a lot of love and affection and the most nondescriptthings to play with.

Hi kala, hope you are enjoying with your grandchild. You are right kala, children are like that, they are so innocent they does not know even that is a broom stick or slippers they try to play with all the objects because everything is new and surprise things to them. But i am very careful when i give toys to them, very choose toys i used to give, now he grown up to 6 years now he come to know what is what. Still he like to play with the toys but with different toys and ask whenever we go out most of the time he want us to buy cars and plans etc., Hope you and your family doing good. Have a wonderful day kala.

Yes JO! He was really down and out last month with pneumonia and it was terribly worrying.I was also not keeping good health but now, both of us are better. As you have also pointed out, I cannot find out why these kids find brooms and slippers so fascinating.

Hi Kala ! A toddler will grab everything Which comes his way because he wants to see, touch, feel and explore new things. His joy and innocence lie with anything which he Could get hold of.

Yes Deepak! And if there is an element of danger or dirt associated with it then the joy becomes manifold. Thanks for adding your views. Basically it is a tendency to explore.

My grandson likes to go to the kitchen and rearrange my vessel stand. I dont know why he likes to change the whole pattern whenever he comes. I have noticed that he keeps the things the way his mother keeps it in their house. So all my plastic boxes go out of the stand because they are supposed to be kept up where his hand does not reach and the vessels from under the cooking platform go to the stand. And after his every visit I have to rearrange the stand as per my preference. This Diwali when he visited he was more fascinated by the chocolate boxes that I had bought so my vessel stand was spared!!! And I was spared the trouble of rearranging everything again. Till his next visit. He does not bother so much for the fancy toys that I buy for him. In fact I forcefully put it in his bag while he is going because he does not even sometimes bother about the toys that are bought for him.

True Kala, this discussion reminds me of what I used to do when my kids were small. I never threw the broken toys, instead I collected them and had a basketful of them. I took them out periodically and my children were happy and busy playing with them for hours. Even if our friends with small kids visited, they also enjoyed more to play with those broken toys rather than the new oneshis is . This is the simplicity in kids which I guess we elders make them complicated.

True. THey do not differentiate between a new toy or a broken toy.If they like the old one it would be more fascinating to them irrespective of the price attached.THe simlest thing gives them joy. Elders are complicated and they promptly pass this on once the child gets older.

Oh yes, the innocent babies thought those simple or trash things are wonderful ones. I remember my youngest son loves to play anything that is round. He likes to keep it rolling when he was more than a year old. Whenever he saw a round vegetables he will ask for it and thought it's a very good toy and keep it rolling like a ball. Sometimes he will pull his sisters button and want to take it off to play Oh kids...soooo innocent and cute.

Yes jaiho! Children are fascinated by the oddest of things and it is so sweet looking at them get absorbed in potatoes and buttons. They are divine; I have forgotten how my son was before he was 2 [all his little prattles] htough I remember some incidents after he became 3 or so. Thanks for the participation.

Hi jai, yes babies are innocent whatever we give they will play with that, but you know jai, whenever we give something to them for play, they start looking at them and wanted to find out what it is. I afraid to give toys to my son, if it is plastic they if he broke may hurt him. So i am very careful while giving toys to him. Have a nice day jai.

Any complicated toy would still seem like broken plastic or whatever and handling the real broken plastic would be easy on the child. I had this nephew who could not sleep without hugging a sheet that smelt bad.He would play with one corner of the sheet with his two fingers until he dozed off. He wanted it at any cost and would not want any other. There is nothing simple about it but a fad according to me.

Only when they want it at any cost then it can be considered a stubborn fad.But if a child says "dirty' and removes his hand from it on instructions then you only tend to smile.

How true, kalav!!!! I enjoyed watching my kids play with empty carton boxes, sticks found in the park(not really recommended, but they enjoyed it soooo much), bits of stones that they've picked up in the park, leaves, flower petals, etc....We have bought them lots of toys, and the grandparents showered them with toys....as you can imagine, our house is littered with toys everywhere. Even with all those toys, they love the simple things. I guess the moral here is that Simplicity won. I mean, let's face it, all of us enjoyed being kids. As we get older, things get more complicated and more responsibilities; we forgot the most enjoyable things are just simple things.

Thanks for that elaborate reply and I agree with you that as adults our lives get much more complicated. Children are divine and they teach us this valuable lesson of simplicity. Children are fascinated by pebbles and twigs and what not! But it is so sweet to watch them being absorbed in this insignificant thing as though it is most important. In their tiny world, so much of importance is given to all these.

My small brother used to preserve all his broken cars, toys etc in his child hood. Of course now also he had them with him even he passed his 12th standard. We used to scold him but sometimes they gives us our childhood memories..

I preserved most of the toys of my child ; someof them had a lot of wear and tear but many have stood the test of time. And nothing can equal those memories.
