Yeah, snow, in October. We're under a winter storm watch right now with an expected 5 to 8 inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon. I've NEVER seen snow in October before. Heck, I can only remember once or twice when it snowed here in November! We usually get our first snow in early December.
But, I've had to prepare for this snowstorm rather abruptly because it floored me when I heard about it this morning. I actually doubted what I had heard so I had to listen to it again to make sure I heard right.
I STILL HAVE TOMATOES ON MY VINES!
Anyone else expecting such an early snowstorm? Have you seen snow this early before? Oh, I know that Denver has reported it's first snow of the season already but, well, that's Denver, where it's not unexpected. If you are expecting snow, are you ready? I haven't even cut the grass for the last time this season!

Off the subject for a second, wow I spent the last 5 minutes typing a nice response and after I sent it to post I lost the site and it went to internet explorer can't display this page. This has happened to me at least a dozen times in the last week with mylot. Now I typed it all for nothing and have to start all over. Does this happen all the time in mylot?
Back on the subject, I don't think I will be typing as long as a reply as the first one I lost but here goes. I live in Calgary, up in Canada and we usually get snow by the middle of October because we are so close to the mountains, they call us "the foothills". But for us to get snow it doesn't have to be really cold so that's a good thing. This year we just got our first snow fall, worth speaking of, stayed on the ground for more than an hour, on Friday, Nov. 4th. Really, really late for us. We don't have much of it left either and it will all be gone in another day or two.
I hate the cold and the snow but since I have to live in Canada Calgary is one of the better places to live. We don't get quite as cold as other cities do but we do get a lot of snow most years. If I had to choose between cold weather and snow I would choose snow over the cold anyday. I would love to live in the states where it is much warmer but it is so hard to move there.
littlemissy here signing off for now,
talk to you later my new friend

Hi littlemissy. Yes, that does happen what I would say is too often. Once you've hit a specific milestone (I believe it is 500 posts) you can copy/paste. Whenever you type a long comment or response you'll have the ability to copy it before you hit the button to post it and, if it does disappear like you just mentioned, you can go to the comment page again and hit 'paste' and try it again. (It usually works the second time.) That's what I do. Just keep going and you'll get to 500 posts in no time and be able to copy and paste, just in case. MyLot has been busy working on what they call an "upgrade" but I believe they're trying to work the bugs out. Hopefully, they can get some problems fixed.
Even with myLot's bugs and glitches, most of us just shrug them off and keep going. The friendships you'll make here and the knowledge you gain is worth a little frustration, in my opinion, anyway.
It sounds to me like you're in one of the most perfect areas of Canada, at least weather-wise. If you ever do move to the US, you'd better do some research into the weather. We have all kinds here. I live in Virginia where we normally get down well past freezing in winter but get an average of around a foot of snow. BUT, two years ago we got a grand total of over 8 feet of snow for the season. If you want warm temperatures all year long you'd have to move to the most southern states and, even then, they can get cold, just not as cold as it gets in the north.
Maybe, when (IF) the economy gets better and we're out of this recession, moving to the states won't be so hard and you can get to a nice, warm state.
I'm like you and I really don't like the cold. Why I live here I couldn't tell you. Maybe I'm just used to it. But it has been colder the past two years and I'm hearing that we're going to have a very cold winter this year. I may end up moving farther south eventually.
Nice meeting you, littlemissy and welcome to myLot! Take care and stay warm!

Much too early for my liking. Years ago we used to have early snow but lately it comes later. I hope the same happens this year. But need to start to mentally prepare for snow at any time as it is unpredictable.

I wish ours would come later. I had a funny feeling about it, though, because we've been getting so much rain in the past month or so. I just never thought we'd get snow in October! Two years ago, we had our first snowstorm on November 3rd and I thought that was unusually early but this one beats that. I guess our days of predictable weather are over. You're right about preparing mentally for snow. When it takes you by surprise like this, it's hard to get anything done. I was lucky to at least get the important things either covered or inside before the snow started.
I hope our next snow doesn't happen until January! Better yet, never. I could live without snow quite happily.

I don't mind a little snow but we get way too much.
I've got a feeling that the weather will only get worse as we keep polluting the planet and the atmosphere and become more unpredictable.
I hope you are doing ok. Has it stopped snowing yet?

That's when we usually see our first snow. Two years ago, when we had the worst winter I can remember and got over eight feet of snow, the first storm was on November 3rd. Not far from now but still November. I thought I'd have at least another month to get things all ready for winter.

Well, I've got a feeling that you have cut the grass for the last time. I live in a zone just outside of where the snow is forecast. If the system moves a few miles while coming down, we'll get some snow. I can't remember ever seeing snow this early in the middle of the country. If it happens, I suppose I'd be as ready as I would ever be. The road crews in this area are just now getting to the trucks, plows, etc. and checking for readiness. So if it does snow here, I think they'd be ready. There's plenty of that salt mixture in the county garage and the crew is ready to start patrolling.
I think I remember that you live out in the "boonies" so you would need to do some stuff to get ready? I do suggest that you get the tomatoes in. They'll ripen ok on the kitchen counter. Let us know how much snow you get. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm not going to worry about the grass at this point. I had to rush to get the mower covered before the snow started. At the moment it's just rain but it's supposed to start snowing before midnight. I'm also hearing all kinds of forecasts, from 4 to 6 inches to 6 to 10 inches so I have no idea what we'll get. I'm hoping it's the lesser. They've only treated some of the major roads around here with that salt water stuff they use now. Normally, all the roads are treated well before the snow starts.
I got all the tomatoes in that I could. Some are quite green so I'm going to try my hand at fried green tomatoes. I've never had them before but everyone I know who has says they're delicious. Some are near ripe so I'll just let them ripen.
Everything else is as ready for this as it's gonna be. I covered what needed covering, got my boat out of the water and covered and brought in the last of my potted plants from the deck. I hope that'll be good enough. This sure didn't give us much time!
I'll let you know what we get. It should end by tomorrow afternoon or early evening since the warning (yeah, it's changed from a watch to a warning) is in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow.

I had to check your profile to see where you were located. Your report of impending snow kind of worried me.
I feel better now because you are quite a bit north of me. We are getting much cooler here now though and I am enjoying it. Last night I even had to turn the heat on for a few minutes. This is really my favorite time of year and I am glad that I now live in an area where this season lasts for awhile.

Oh, lucky you! We've had the heat on for a couple of weeks now. It has been warm enough during the day so the heat didn't come on until nighttime but we're still using it every day. Tomorrow is only supposed to get up to 38 degrees so I know the heat will be on all day.
This hit so suddenly! We had a period of about an hour yesterday when it was so windy I could barely stand in it without being blown over and found out that it was this massive cold front coming in.
I wish the fall season would last a bit longer. It's my favorite time of theyear, too. The trees seem to be exceptionally beautiful this year and so full of leaves! But, maybe that is a sign of the forecasted bad winter. When I was out today I made a special note to enjoy the trees while I could because this snow is probably going to bring down most if not all of them.

I hope you got some great pictures. I did that only a couple of days before this snow hit because the colors seemed so much more vivid than normal. Maybe we had just the right weather for the gorgeous colors. Sadly, the colors here peaked, then we got the snow only days later. It was such heavy snow, too. I could see the leaves and smaller branches breaking off the trees all over the place earlier today. It just won't be the same once the snow is gone.
Here's a photo I took on Oct. 26th. I'll post one I took of the same view today once the snow really started coming down.

When I went out this evening I noticed that the trees had all turned overnight. The sides of the mountains are so beautiful. It doesn't last long though before the leaves start falling. I'm going out tomorrow and take a ton of pictures before that happens. Last year I waited too late.

I am further north than you in Pgh. PA. It is snowing here as I type this. I thought it was supposed to snow in the higher elevations not here. I don't know how much we are supposed to get. I haven't seen the weather since last night and it changes every hour. Last year, we didn't get a lot until after the holidays and I hoped it would be the same this year!

Is it still snowing there? It stopped here a few hours ago. We got a total of about six inches but it's melting already. I hope it doesn't snow too much where you are. I'm sure that no one was prepared for such an early snow. I know I wasn't! I've never heard of snow in October before, although they say it does happen infrequently. I think I read that somewhere in the northeast it has snowed three times in October since 1835 or something like that. I never thought I'd see it! Hmmm, that's around once every 60 years or so so I doubt I ever see it again. I hope not, anyway. It sure made me scamper to get things either covered up, picked (tomatoes) or brought inside. Maybe it'll go back to normal after this snow melts. I sure hope so!
Let me know how much you get (got) when you can.

Yeah, I'm worried about this winter. I've heard that it's going to be a bad one. Some have said it'll be colder than normal and others have said we're supposed to have a lot of ice this year. Not so much snow but plenty of ice. If that's the case, I'd better stock up now because I'm not even going to TRY to go out if everything is covered in ice.
We had that same kind of strange summer. It got over 100 for a few days this past Spring (and ruined my cherry crop ) and once Summer hit, we had those up and down temps, too, but we didn't get much rain. We were in a mild drought but that ended about a month ago and it has rained almost every day since then so I've been concerned about more than normal snow. I should have been thinking about more than normal ice, though, with colder temps that's a real possibility.
One thing I think we can all count on is totally unpredictable weather.

It has stopped now. It snowed most of the day but it was mixed with rain so we only got an inch or two. It really wasn't as bad as we sometimes get, but it was so early! It is supposed to go back up into the 50's so we shouldn't get more for awhile anyway. If our summer was any indication of the winter we are going to have we are in trouble. It was drastic. One day it was in the 90's and the next in the 70's and a LOT of rain!

The biggest snow Before Snowmaggeon was in October 1978 or 79. way back then snow meant no school so I was Happy! And since back then I wasn't into seeing the news , I can't tell you how much in inches but It was over ankle high. I hope you have everything you need snd that they are wrong about the amount.

I remember the winter of 1978/79. We had three snowstorms within two weeks and they dumped a total of five feet on us by the time it was all over. The Chesapeake Bay was totally frozen over! I think that was the only time it ever froze like that. I remember that year so vividly because it was MY job to shovel all that white stuff and we lived in a corner house with sidewalk across the front and down the side of the house.
I remember my poor dog thought the back yard was just over that big white hump (when we had just about three feet of snow on the ground at the time) and she jumped up and over, at least what she thought was over, right into it, then came barrelling out the side to where I had shoveled, totally covered in snow.
I hope they were wrong about the amount but at this point it sure doesn't look like it. It's coming down really heavy and doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon. The trees (and everything else) are already covered. I took a photo of some trees across the lake that I had just taken a photo of three days ago because of the gorgeous colors. When I upload it, I'll post it for you.

Whenever I hear "panhandle" I automatically think of the one here, the West Virginia panhandle or the Maryland panhandle but I know there are others, of course. You'd be speaking of the Oklahoma panhandle, right?
I have a horrible feeling that we should all just try to get used to these new, weird weather patterns because I just don't think we're going to go back to what we're used to. The weather seems to be changing all over the world.
Yeah, not even November. I just took a picture of the snow-covered trees that I had taken a picture of just a few days ago because of their gorgeous colors. Sadly, all the colors are now white. I wish I could have enjoyed the fall colors a bit longer because we had just hit the peak for fall foliage colors. At least I was able to get out and get a few pictures. I wanted to this year more than normal because the colors seemed much more vivid than normal. Now it just seems like it was just a big tease, giving us the gorgeous colors to drool over, then whitewash them in a flash. Hmmph!
As soon as I upload the photo of the white trees, I'll post it. I'll post the one of the colors first so you can see why I'm so upset by this snow.

No snowstorms expected here, but then again I don't live where it snows. LOL However, we did experience some freaky weather back in June of this year. Low temps, high winds, hail, funnel clouds, and even a tornado or 2. And here I'm in California.

I think the entire country has had some really strange lately, especially this year. I can't say for sure but it seems like the world has been having more earthquakes than average, too. Lucky you! Well, I'm not happy about the cold, either. It got down to 32 today but is supposed to get into the 20's tonight. That's WAY too cold for October! I was also just talking about how sad it is that the gardening season is over with the cooler temperatures when, BAM! we got hit by this frigid cold front and snow. I am also not ready for winter! I barely got the essential things covered up outside and brought in my houseplants that were on the deck when it started snowing. Hopefully, it will warm up a bit in a few days and I can property prepare for winter.
I'm with you, I can't wait until April for the warmer weather, either! Actually, I start getting excited around February when I start seedlings inside for planting when it's warm enough but I thive on warm, sunny weather.

I was really surprised that here in SW Ohio we are expecting a few flakes on Saturday morning. They may get more 30 miles north where my dad lives! They say it won't stick but it's awfully early--I looked at my notes and the first sign of snow (in the form of little balls of white) came on November 6. Plus, there is are a couple of trees down the block that I can see from my back steps that form a dragon when the leaves are gone--I can almost see it now and last year he didn't appear till November 18. I and other people have seen wooly worms with either no brown stripe or very, very thin ones which the oldies say indicates a very bad winter.
Your poor tomatoes! Salvage what you can. Are fried green tomatoes really unripe tomatoes fried up? You could do that, maybe. Have friends over for a tomato party.
How's the old ball and chain these days? Hope everything is well health-wise with you both!

That is so cool about the trees that form a dragon! Could you take a photo of it?
We have plenty of leaves still on most of the trees but I expect they won't last long. The weather dudes are saying that, because of the weight and amount of snow we are supposed to get and because of so many leaves still on the trees, a lot of branches and power lines are going to come down. (I've already told my sons to come on over if they lose power. Our lines are buried for the most part and we hardly ever lose electricity.)
I'm hoping that this storm turns out to be like that hurricane, not worth all the fuss. I can't believe this is happening in October. Two years ago, when we had that huge amount of snow, the first snowstorm was on November 3rd. THAT was highly unusual because it was so early but, geez, it was still November.
I think you're right about us having a really bad winter this year. More than one person has told me the same thing. I guess it's a good thing HE has finally had his pain issue fixed because he can go out and shovel this stuff by himself this year.
He's behaving himself, probably because he knows I'm moving out and behaving is his way of trying to get me to change my mind. Too bad, though, I'll be out of here as soon as things settle down again. Besides, he stays pretty lethargic with all the pain meds he's taking.
As for those fried green tomatoes, yep, they're the unripe tomatoes. I have quite a few of them that I picked earlier today so I'm going to give frying them a try. I've never had them but I've heard they're delicious. I just hope I do it right.
I hope you don't get more than a few flakes this early. If it turns into anything worse, be safe! I'm nice and warm with lots of food, toilet paper, eggs, bread, everything you need in a snowstorm. LOL

Oh, how I wish I could have a yard sale! But, we live back on a private road that is off a road that is not well traveled. I'd have to put up a lot of signs on the main roads. Wow! Already? That's early! I live in GA. We rarely have any snow. If we have any it is just a dusting and it melts away the next day. However, we have had some fluke storms where we had a huge snow storm... one time in the 90s when the blizzard affected us, and then a couple of years ago we had deep snow for a few days. I used to live in NY, and we had snow a long time during winter... but I can't stand the cold anymore. It gets cold here around January and then warms up again by the end of February. We get cold nights now, but warm days. I am still in my short sleeves outside in the day time.

AAARGH! Oh, how I wish I was there! LOL
Yeah, this was way too early. We got maybe six inches before it ended but the temp rose to 38 so it started melting already. It should be all gone by tomorrow night, if the weather dudes are correct about it getting up to the mid-40's tomorrow. It's going into the 20's tonight. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I'm getting to that point where I just can't stand the cold anymore, either.
Maybe Georgia is where I belong. I had thought about that decades ago, I think it was after an especially cold winter and I wanted a longer growing season. Besides that, I LOVE Vidalia onions and I hear they're grown in Georgia. Why they can't be grown here I don't know unless they need a longer growing season than other onions. (I can grow peaches up here... and do... so I don't need Georgia for that. lol)

I would love to spend the winter in Florida but, from what I've heard, it's not too much fun in the summer, when it's so hot and humid. I'm not fond of the winters here because I just don't like the cold. I don't know why I've spent my entire life in this area, maybe because no matter where you go, everyplace has their own problems.
I'm happy that you haven't had to use your AC for awhile. We stopped using ours weeks ago but had to turn on the heat almost right away because it's been getting so cold at night, in the 40's or even 30's so I know our electric bill isn't going to be any lower than normal. Maybe I should come and visit you down there in Florida!

I hope you have a better winter this year, moon. We had a relatively mild one last year although the temps were a bit colder than normal. We didn't get much snow at all. It was two years ago that we had the winter from hell. Over eight feet of snow was dumped on us for the season. It's been awfully rainy for around a month now and I have a horrible suspicion that we're in for another extremely snowy winter. I've heard that we're supposed to have colder than normal temps this year, too.
All I can say is, with this winter coming so early, I HOPE that spring will also make an early appearance but I won't be holding my breath.
Maybe we should all move to Australia or one of the South Pacific islands? I'm game!

last winter was blizzards, ice, snow you name it. seemed like over half of it was below freezing and in TN we get usually like less than a week of below freezing weather for the season, maybe a day or 2 of ice issues and 1 snow that is usually 1-3 inches that disappears in 1-2 days.. this was a constant freezing with bad ice and seemed like it snowed all the time. as soon as we had a decent day it would start all over again. although my husband got a ton of overtime since we live in the city 10 mins away from his work and with good roads and everyone else far away couldnt get there

Hi mentalward!I can’t contribute much to this topic because we are heading into summer here and it never ever snows here at any time of the year! Hi Paula. Well, it's 32F degrees right now, which is the freezing point. We were having such lovely, cooler weather, normal for fall when we had this cold front move in out of nowhere, making it at least 20 degrees colder. This is insane for October! Geez, all the Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns are going to freeze. I wonder what all the trick-or-treaters are going to do, maybe have to put their snow boots and winter coats on over their costumes. What a shame!
I'm at the point in my life where I could do without seeing snow ever again. My bones are too old for the extremely cold temps and I'm just too stiff and slow to have much fun in the snow, although I do plan to go out and build a tiny snowman soon, maybe just a foot tall. But this snow has to slow down a bit before I do that. It's coming down HARD right now. All the gorgeous colors of the leaves are gone, replaced by white. It's pretty but I would have liked to have the beautiful fall colors to look at awhile longer. I can see the leaves falling off the trees now because of the weight of the snow so, by the time this snow is gone, the leaves will probably all be on the ground.
Maybe I'll get that passport of mine renewed and come visit you guys down under for awhile, say until Spring?

I'm glad you didn't get any. I'd like to say this early snowstorm was a fluke but the past few years have been really unusual so I think our days of having "normal" weather are over.
We ended up with around six inches but it warmed up to 38F so it started melting as fast as it landed by the time it was almost over. Tonight is supposed to go down into the 20's so all this melted snow is going to freeze into ice. I'm just thankful that tomorrow is Sunday and most people don't have to go out. My oldest son works on weekends (he has off Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and he drives for his job. He said he would stay home if it was bad so I won't have to worry, as long as he sticks to his word. I doubt his employer would expect him to dive on ice, anyway. Well, that's the hope. His employer is Nestle, a rather huge company. I don't know what their policy is about driving during hazardous conditions but have noticed that larger companies tend to not be as personal as smaller companies. If they expect him to drive on ice, I'll just have to stop buying their chocolate! LOL

That's the tough thing about the weather. Trying to get to work. The company I work doesn't close for weather and although they say they understand if a person can't make it, they do emphasize that they don't close and if one can make it they should. Of course that puts the bug in everyone's head that others are there and maybe they should try to be there too. I have to be there. I got a room once down the road because I was expecting bad weather. I'm in management though so I really do need to be there when the doors open..lol.

Thank you, rameshchow. I pulled out all my winter clothes earlier this week so I have my sweaters, hats, gloves, etc. all ready. I've misplaced my snow boots so I may have to stay in tomorrow but I'd love to go play in the snow if it's not too cold.

Somehow, I think that the earth has already shifted a bit, so the seasons have changed somehow. In our country, there was never any rain during Decembers. But in the latter years, our Decembers are always filled with rainy days, making it so gloomy. In fact, even our summers have rains.

Hi globaldoc. I watched a program about the earth and how it is shifting and changing everyone's weather. I think we're all just going to have to get used to unusual weather because I believe it is here to stay. Our winters are getting colder. The last two were colder than normal and two years ago we got around seven feet more snow than what is typical, usually around a foot. I'm hearing that this winter is going to be a bad one, too.
I completely understand about those gloomy rainy winter days. We've had our share of those around here, too. I remember one December when it reached 70F degrees on Christmas Day. I couldn't believe how WARM it was! That was a very warm winter and it also rained a lot. I remember having a rose bloom in January, so rare I've never seen that before. I think I would rather have snow because at least that is very pretty when it first falls. Rain is just wet and no guarantee that flowers will blossom and make it all pretty.

Hi khare. I have enjoyed watching this rare early snowfall, mostly because it began to melt later in the day so it won't be difficult to get out and walk or drive tomorrow. When it is colder here and it snows, sometimes the snow gets so packed down it turns into ice and it is impossible to drive on and you shouldn't try to walk on it, either.
But, when it is falling, it is so beautiful and peaceful. I hope you are able to experience a beautiful snowfall one day. I would rather live in a warm place and travel to experience snow than live in a place (here) that gets so cold you can barely breathe and snows too much so you're always busy shoveling it or slipping and falling. Everyone I know has slipped on snow or ice at least once and some of them broke bones or sprained an ankle. Snow is beautiful but it can be treacherous.

oh dear yes i can imagine how hard it is to be in such extreme cold almost all the months of the year.we have to face winter for few months but life gets difficult in that phase and all that i want is to sit inside my bed and not move out at all,but that's not a possibility as we do have to look around things around us.
