How to diminish coffee's effects?

October 30, 2011 9:28pm CST
I have never been a coffee drinker until I was 18, when my school work required me to do so. However, whenever I drink it, I feel some palpitations and insomnia even when I drink it early in the morning, what does this mean? Any tips on how to prevent this?

Do no drink anything if it makes you feel uncomfortable. If you want to stay awake you can try drinking hot water. Coffee has caffeine which some people are allergic to, that's why you re having some problems.

sreekutty ... Hot water?? Never heard of that one..will it really wake you up? I know warm coffee wakes me up faster than cold coffee.... maybe I need to try hot water...

sreekutty, I actually use hot water to help me sleep. But that's just me :) Since I have other allergies, maybe coffee is one of them.

It means that you are sensitive to caffeine. Drink decaf, I guess. Why did you school require you to drink coffee? That's kind of weird.

Oh I see. I don't think that caffeine has ever actually given me energy and I've never really drank it for that reason; those who do just end up having less energy in the long run. Maybe try drinking a caffeinated soda pop instead, which has less caffeine and so hopefully won't give you the side effects. Different coffees can also be different strengths, so maybe you could find a milder one or put less grounds in when you are making it.

Hello Rosmary. I am a coffee addict, drinking four or five cups a day starting from breakfast time. I used to drink very strong coffee before. Then, I started getting palpitations like you do. So, since then, I stopped drinking stron coffee and changed to decaffinated coffee, and I take it with sugar and lots of milk. That's better.

Using the energy by doing exercises or things like this always help.

Now that my schedule's a bit free, I use my spare time to exercise. There are just times when schedule's tight. But you are right, exercise really is energizing :)

rosmary101 If it is the caffeine, remember not only coffee has caffeine, but so do some colas, chocolate...sucks, huh? Also decaf has some caffeine...you could try orange juice. I find it a quick pick up in the morning or afternoon, but it’s probably the sugar content. Need to watch that too Welcome to myLot

I did notice having some "drunken" symptoms when I eat dark chocolate. Come to think of it, maybe I do have a really low tolerance to it. :)

Hi Rosmary, your body is not used to the amount of caffeine. You can either cut down on the consumption or switch to decaffeinated version. Actually even those so called decaf coffee has caffeine in it. Once I drank a cup of decaf coffee, and could not fall asleep until many hours later. Best to drink half the usual amount, and slowly get your body used to coffee.

Is it the coffee or something you add to the coffee? If you have that problem the only thing to prevent is, is not to drink coffee at all.

Some people say that drinking coffee is not good and other say is good , I dont care about what they say , I still drink my coffe , but , I try not to drink it after 5 pm . You can try to use less sugar, add lowfat milk it will make it less strong. If You continue with side effects, you must stop drinking coffee. Good luck and comeback and tell how it goes.

I never experience the effects like you when i drink coffee. But i guess, maybe it is because of the caffein. I suggest you decrease the amount of coffee you use and replace it with some milk so the caffein wouldnt be too strong for your body. Besides it is taste better, at least for me ^_^
