Do you like Netbooks? Or do you prefer the conventional desktops?

This time last year, I got my wife a HP Netbook. Initially we were both very excited by the handy Netbook and the fact that it is easy to carry. But slowly euphoria gave way to realization of some of the truths. The Atom processor is really very slow. The Netbook does not have a CD drive, so we needed to purchase an external drive to install anything on the Netbook. Also, typing on the small keyboard and the small monitor resulted in back pains if we used it over long stretch of time.
So finally we are now re-thinking of getting our conventional desktop for the house and use the Netbook only on our travels.
What is your view on the Netbooks?
Cheers!
Ram

I have laptops and a desktop, and I find it easier to use the desktop. Using laptops for so long makes my back hurts, unlike using desktop wherein I can seat perfectly. I have HP, Acer, Toshiba and Apple laptops. HP is my least favorite, it is so slow, freezes a lot, and is easily broken. I bought the HP, Toshiba and Acer at the same time. All are still looking new and working well except for the HP.

The HP, Acer, and Toshiba laptops are mine and the Apple laptop is for the whole family. The HP and Acer are for my personal use and the Toshiba is for my work. I usually bring my Toshiba laptop at work, and I leave my two other laptops at home. I use the HP if I'm just going to surf the net, and I use the Acer for playing games, watching movies, and visiting mylot. In our country, there will be an electronics super sale once a year, that was why I bought these laptops

Yes, very heavy 2kg+, and it is not small since it is 14". And since it is not the small netbook, the price to performance ratio is rational enough.

yeah.. I have desktop, laptop and netbook with me at home, office and client side respectively.. I find most comfortable laptop.. it works very nice. bluetooth wifi I use for connecting with net and also very good keyboard by sony.. desktop is second best in usage.. it can work for 90-100 hours without getting shut down.. while netbook having less features specially as you mentioned not having DVD drive and atom processor is too slow.. also getting heat if I use it for 5-6 hours..

In my country the price of laptop and desktop are almost the same. But of course its much cheaper if you buy desktop. But in the sense that laptop is much smaller and is more sufficient I think laptop has a fair price compare to bulky desktop.

Netbooks are ideal for travel or for home use only, it is not ideal for heavy users. But, you can purchase a laptop that has DVD drives and with higher capacity of memory and hard drives. I recommend you Lenovo, is top of the line when it comes to laptop.

Although laptop and netbooks look the same. They are not actually the same in term of specs.Usually netbooks are much cheaper compare to laptop simply because netbooks are build for lifespan of three years only. simply because of the belief that after three years the technology used in that netbooks is obsolete that you will buy a new one again. And since its cheap you feel its worth it for the last three years. While laptop is more heavy duty and the really good for travel that why its cost more if you buy laptop. But if you just look at physical features. Its almost the same. Only laptop look like techie.

I've always wondered about the netbooks because they seem so inexpensive compared to desktops. but I guess in that sense you get what you pay for?

Actually its still expensive compare to desktops. Although its cheap in the sense that it much cheaper compare to branded laptops. But I think the difference is that netbooks are not made to last more than four years. So if your netbook reach four years you will see many defects. While at least laptop you can still use for seven years. The reason of netbooks life span is that since technology become obsolete every three years. What the use of making a laptop that last longer if its become obsolete in three years right?

I am totally agree with your plan, Ram. As i majored in network engineering in college, i was given a laptop, which made me happy for a couple of months. Subsequently, however, problems began to show up. First, as you said, every time i wanted to watch CD, i got to use an external drive. And after typing for one or two hours, my wrist hurt. Even if my laptop was much expensive than my roomies'desktops, i admired them very much. Now i am typing this response comfortably with my desktop. And i am really enjoying the convinience.

Yes, the wrists hurt if you use the laptop over a significant period of time. Especially if you have kept the laptop on a flat surface and are typing by bending your back. Desktops require a table and hence mandate a decent posture and that also helps I believe.

Well, I used to like netbook for surfing, updating social networking status, chatting or any internet related activity. But when it comes to working or playing games, netbook is tremendously slow. Like you said,it best for traveling only. However, with the booming of Ipad and tablet pc,now its popularity decreasing a lot. As we know, people also loves to buy lifestyle gadget and netbook is no longer trendy.

I think using conventional desktop is better and easier than using netbooks.
yeah we know that netbook is easy to carry and handy, but it have so much weakness like what you have just explained.
it doesnt hav e a CD drive, It have too small keyboards.
and it have a very slow processing program.
You will have to waiting in long time if in the netbook have so much program with big capacity data.
small monitor also making trouble in you.
you cant see clearly about what you wacth.
so using conventional desktop better.
and i think if we will use netbook, we should use this only in particular time.
Cheers...

Yes, it is ok when we just have to access the internet and do nothing else. But if you are power user, then the Netbook is not of great use. I prefer the laptop to be better than netbook for my business purposes. But for games, I still prefer my old desktop.
Cheers!

The obvious choice now to replace a Netbook is definitely a tablet PC. I guess the reason for you to take a Netbook instead of a laptop is because of the size. If that is the case, a tablet PC is just nice in that aspect. But beware that tablet PC is not really meant for serious working with the smaller screen and keyboard issue etc. I think it is more for multi-media entertainment. So a regular good old laptop is still the thing to have for work when on the move. If it is more for using at home, I personally prefer a desktop with big monitor.

Actually, netbook is very handy if you have long travel outside, especially when you spend a lot of time on bus, train or plane, it will help you consume time. But if play computer game or something like that I prefer desktops, it's very comfortable to put your fingers on bigger keyboard, sitting on chair, READY to play!:) That's what I usually do.

i have a netbook an HP 210 series and its really very portable and cute. however, with its small size comes with small memory so i had to buy an external hard disk. but i love it still though. and having a desktop as a sturdy piece of equipment at home works for me too, so that when i need to work and i need a big screen and be comfortable, i have my desktop. so having both is quite handy.

Well, I also bought an HP laptop, its quite nice and it is convertible into a tablet. I have chosen this one since it fits my needs. The processor is quite fast and its even designed with good graphics for games. But it comes along with a disadvantages..the price. Its quite expensive considering the features that it has. But I have chosen such simply because, I want it portable and is fitting for my work which is conducting presentations and lecture demonstrations in different places. I think choosing a laptop or desktop will all depend on how you intend to use it. I mean, the purpose for such. If you are more of doing it for home use, office use, then a desktop would be great. But if you use it for things that I do, then a laptop or netbook would be the preferred choice.

I think the net books have only one advantage over the desktops and that is the protability.. but this is no longer an a unique feature.. the netbooks are good as some smart phones so I would prefer a smart phone rather than carrying a netbook.. and if you want to use the comp at home.. I prefer the desktop as I like playing games on it they prove much better with such things.. we don't have to worry about comp getting heated or about the battery...

If you ask me three years ago I will say desktop for three reason. One its can easily upgradable. While laptop is so hard to upgrade since some component are fixed to the motherboard. And two is that since its laptop its cost a lot more to buy than desktop and another thing is that when you use desktop if a keyboard is broken you can just buy new one. While in laptop you need to repair it in order to use it. Or buy external keyboard that for me is hassle.

I agree that netbooks and even laptops are uncomfortable to say the least. Having the tiny keyboard so close to the screen just puts your body in an unnatural position. You type without looking or become a hunchback!
I much prefer the full size desktop and I hope that they will never become obsolete.
