I like to write. I have been told all of my life that I should write a book. And I have always wanted to. Thing is, I can't figure out what to write about. They say to write about what you know. And so,I dwell on that and I think shoot what do I really KNOW? In fact the older I get the less I believe I do know. They say that is the true definition of wisdom. To realize we really know nothing. I have looked at the books others write and I realized that many of them are just a lot of filler. And so, I think I could do that. I have had some pretty unique life experiences and I guess some people might be interested in them. Do you have this problem or have had and overcome it? Would love to hear your thoughts.

If you accept the http://nanowrimo.org challenge starting this Sunday November 2011 to write a book you will be behind by 8335 words. The goal is to produce only a rough draft of your book which amounts to 1167 words per day which just means write, write, write. If getting a late start is an issue one solution is to cheat! Join the rebels there and use perhaps a short story of something you wrote before or something you started to make up the 8335 words and build on that, like you said the rest is filler and who knows you could actually past the expections. (expectations are write, write, write) Not sure if you are a write on the go type writer like me or not but if you need a good outline, certainly can whip up a short outline on something you are familar with. Just do it. Think of it, sure this is not a great book, heck, it is only a draft that needs a lot of editing but at the end of the month you could be saying, wow, I wrote a book.

I am trying it this year but somewhat stuck at the moment, ouch. I think the idea for a lot of people is for encouragement to just write even if it is a very rough draft and then pour over it later when it is done in December or after. An idea, yes.

That is an interesting looking site. I don't think I could handle the fast pace at this point though. But, gets me going. Thanks

Thank god, for me there is nobody who says to write a book. Repeatedly you are saying ‘They are saying.” Who are they? If they are your well wishers they should not encourage you to write a book because you are wise enough to realize that you do not know anything.

I don't think it's accurate to say she doesn't know anything, and it's okay for her friends to encourage her. Encouraging someone to do something they are passionate about is a good thing. She just needs to figure out what it is she wants to write about.

Writing what you know is definitely a good rule. But you don't have to be an expert...for example, I love animals, so I have written a few articles about animals, but I'm definitely not an expert on everything there is to know. I also like horror/thriller movies and books, and I have written 2 horror short stories that I think turned out really well, but I am definitely not an expert when it comes to the horror genre either. So you don't have to KNOW something to write about it, but enjoying it helps. If you need ideas, you can get them from everywhere! Check out news stories from across the United States, something might jump out at you and spark an idea in your head. Think about all the different people involved in the news story, and whose point of view you could write from. You could look for an idea in your everyday life. Although it isn't techinically proper etiquette, go somewhere public an ease drop on people. Do you have a mall with a food court? That would be a good spot. Or a little cafe? Don't be blatant in your ease dropping, what people don't know won't hurt them. My dad has come across quite a few great lines that he has heard from ease dropping that he would love to use in a story. You could get all kinds of things from ease dropping on others; complete story ideas, memorable quotes, etc. I like to use photographs as inspiration for my stories. In fact, one of my short horror stories I wrote was based on a pretty innocent photograph. Although, sometimes it is tough for me to find ones that spark anything, but when it works it works well! Good luck!

You make some good points. I have heard a lot of great things just by catching a conversation. My Dr put a liner on me the other day. I said to him, I suppose you think losing weight would help solve some of my problems and he said, bones are for dogs! I just love it. And it's a keeper.

I'm glad I've helped you, at least a little! lol That's a hoot! I can't really share the story my dad told me he got from work...it's not too appropriate, but it is funny. lol.

Hi joni, I'm just like you. I ponder and think, and never get down to writing. But it's not going to stop me from achieving my dream of writing a book. But I know I won't be able to achieve it by just dreaming. The hard work has to come in. I do have some "interesting" life experiences but I do not want to write a memoir or something like that. After much pondering, I have narrowed down to writing a so-called compilation of short snippets of my life. The problem with us is that we do not get down to the writing. We just need to do it. Since it is NanoWrimo month so maybe you can get a book out this month. I think I'm going to try that. I did not realise that it's already the 4th of the month.

It happens very often with me, having the push from inside but may mind always having a negative thought. I have not fully overcome this but I'm trying my best to see where I can go with writing. Some years back, I almost registered in Writers Bureau but because I did not wanna risk, I set that idea aside and till now I'm still fighting with myself... but I must be a writer.

I didn't even know there was a Writers Bureau. So, you taught me something! Don't give up. You have to write because you love it. Chasing dream of being a best seller and making tons of money will scare you away. And it does not happen to everyone either. So, just write for the love of it. Start calling yourself a write and you will be one.

Writer's block happen when there are lots of ideas in your brain that you need to process and you get disinterested sometimes. Being in a stressful situation can also provoke this kind of condition.Others function well having lots of stressor. It serves as an engine to think rapidly and do things according to how they perceived it. In writing, writers need some inspiration to do it. Then do some research to compliment the subject they wanted to write about. When this thing happened to me, I go for a vacation in the countryside to unwind and to be re-energized by changing the environment. It was helpful to me and I guess this could also help you. good luck.

I think that writing about your life's trials and tribulations is a good thing and if lessons are there for others to learn from then all the better. Some people can sit down and write a book in a few weeks and other take years so it's not how long it takes you to write your novel but what you put in it. You can get help someone that has written and have someone to guide you somewhat and give them credit for their help. That is a way to get your book started. Steven King helps people for free even though he does fiction his help is good for any writing.

Have you tried goal setting? Seems to be the in thing at the mo. Set yourself small goals everyday to write something.... doesn't matter what you write just as longs you write something down and get in the habit, that way hopefully your block will go and you can write what you really want to. Ideas to help you write everyday could be.... What you had for breakfast What you saw on your way to work/school/school run What you done at the weekend And so forth... just ot get the ideas and writing flowing again.... Pop on over to my house for a cuppa tea and a piece of cake there's lots of us in my house chatting and sharing ideas and friendships, we can discuss your writer's block? Hope you have time to pop in.

I have writer's block at the moment. I really want to write again. I want to finish my collection of poems and my collection of short stories, but I just can't seem to get started. It was easier for me to write in the past and I want to experience that again, I want to get back to a situation when I can just sit down and write for hours. I have decided to change the place where I write and try to write outside the house maybe in a public place where there are people around me and where I can get inspired by the atmosphere. Sometimes it easier for me to write in cafe or something like that. I am going to try that, I don't know if it works, but it is worth a try.

My ex always used to tell me the same thing. He would say instead of reading what others have wrote, I should write myself and maybe make some money. I never did it. I am not sure why. I don't even start many discussions because I can't think of any topic of interest to anyone else. If I can't think of something to write a few paragraphs about, how could I write a book?

I used to think like this. I thought what could I possibly have to say that would help or be of interest to anyone else. But, then I realized that I was once searching for answers and read books by others an just because I grew and no longer held the same belief system did not mean that I could not help another who is now where I was. It's all in in how something is said and the approach that makes all the difference. We can be told the same things or read the same things many times and then someone comes along and says the exact same thing and we let it in and transformation begins. I hope you give it a try.

Hi joni. I can make out something here. You say you like writing. And the other fact you mention here that you are under some sort of pressure of expectation: your people expect you to write. Some times too much expectation can be too overwhelming and that can cause restraints. Which is, the moment you have begun writing or have written a bit, your mind is weighed down perhaps by the thought of it being good enough. Did I hear you write a blog? If you are not right now, it would be a good idea to start a blog. Its your online personal diary and you can even control who gets to read it. The point is one has to make a beginning. And nothing better than a personal weblog to do it. You are the writer, editor & publisher and you write what YOU LIKE TO. I'm sure you'll probably write very well. Simply get your thoughts out and arrange them in articles. As you progress, you will have the cluttered feeling ease up a bit & there will be an inspiration to better them. Writer's block can hit the best of writers. The solution is to focus away from the pressure of expectation & relax. Ideas will still land in your mind in a relaxed state. Writing & managing a blog is no big deal these days, what with lots of self help tools out there. But assuming you already are writing a blog, you could get some 'how to articles' from experts like Darren Rowse of ProBlogger. Relaxation and diverting mind away for a while when things seem a bit hard is the key.

No, I don't have a blog but I have considered it. I got to where I was spending way too much time online so I got away from it. Then a friend suggested I come here. And I really enjoy it. You re right, I do feel a lot of pressure and hold myself to some high expectations. I will look up Darren Rowse and read what he has to say about blogging. I have tried other venues of expressing my creativity and I don't seem to get far and my husband says it's because I am trying to distract myself from what I should be doing which is writing. I had an experience as a teen in school and it has really scared me off the writing. I wrote a series of poems. And years later I showed them to a friend and he said, looks like you wrote your life. And so,now, i am afraid to get creative as I like to write about metaphysics and so forth as one of my choices. I don't want to bring about anything close to what I have already done. So, I am liking the ideas of writing about experiences as there should be no harm there. Thanks for your tips.

I love to write too especially writing poems. It's easy for me to write if I write about my feelings. But to write an article about population or anything about society, I find it hard sometimes to produce an article. To overcome it, I collect all the data then decide a topic to be written. Then I finally realized, I've finished one!;-)

I like to write poetry also. And feelings. Good luck with your writing.

Try taking a time in your life and fictionalizing it. It is also a good idea to make a list of things that come to mind, then build on those ideas. Good luck.

I am a to-the-point write, what other people write in 3 paragraphs I write in one, and I struggle to make it longer. That is the way I like to read things to though, I don't want to read a long article, I want to read a short one because I can find all the same info in the short one without taking all the time to read the long one. I don't know why this is, but it is the way I am.

Kinda sounds like me. I am not real good at adding filler to a point. That needs some work.
