Today I tried to withdraw money from ATM. The transaction was declined and I came out of it and returned home. Later I received one message saying that the amount has been debited from my bank account! Thankfully, I had the declined receipt. I rang up the customer care and lodged a complaint. I just hope the amount get reversed to my account. I have heard people complaining about such incidences but never been a victim. Have you ever faced anything like this? Any security measure we can adopt while withdrawing money? Thanks.

I had this exact same issue happen to me a month ago. I contacted my bank via their online service, and was able to dispute the charge. They issued me a temporary credit in the amount of the dispute, and then investigated my claim. They found an error in the machine I was using and made my credit permanent. I kept the receipts from the machine, and I suggest you do the same. I never needed them as their investigative process did not require them, but just in case you have to prove your point. I hope it all works out for you!

Yes, the transaction slips are important. I am lucky to have received it also. What if I hadn't!

That makes much sense. The mail that I received from them requests me to wait till Nov 17th, since the transaction was from a machine from a different bank!

That is a situation that you (and I) would not like to see! Since the issue happened to me at a machine in a store that was not part of my bank, I will not use any machines that are not directly affiliated with my bank. If I have to go over to the bank to use the machine, then that is what I do. Yes it is less convenient, but the concern that they would have not ruled in my favor outweighs any inconvenience.

We have an ATM at the store where I work and I've only seen that happen once. The ATM keeps a record of all transactions. If you go back to the ATM where the withdrawl was made then someone should be able to help you prove to your bank that the money was never recieved. I'm guessing that what happened was that your bank approved the withdrawl but the ATM itself declined it possibly because the ATM was out of cash. In that case, your bank should quickly get an automatic notice from the ATM that the transaction did not go through and then credit your account. Usually these things correct themselves within 24 hours. If not, just go back to the ATM and talk to the person in charge.

Yes, you are right. Things delayed have possibility of things denied. However, I got the money credited on 12th. Relieved after that.

That is just crazy in this world of computers! If they can deduct if from your account instantly...so instantly that the transaction hadn't even completed then you would think they could re-credit it just as instantly. Most do get taken care of right away without problem. I am thinking this might be your bank dragging it's feet??

Hi Mimpi! It is really upsetting that you had to face this kind of problem. It someimes happens due to satellite link problems as ATM are connected to satellite/computers. As you have made the compliment, the matter would be resolved soon and your amount will be credited within 15 days. You also need to contact your concerned branch to apprise them of this incident. I have not faced this kind of problem but some of my friends faced this kind of unpleasant situation. Have some patience, you will get your money back. Good night/day.

Thanks deepak. This the first time that I have faced this. Luckily the receipt would come to my rescue. The hassle is bothering though. It took a some time and I was wondering why the machine is making the horrible noise. Ultimately I got the bill without the cashout.

I have had a declined amount debited once but a few minutes later the amount was automatically credited again. You should take another statement and see if the amount has been reversed. Sometimes this happens. I have not heard of anyone loosing the amount of a declined transaction as yet. Hope you get your money.

I just checked my bank account and it's not credited yet. But you said makes much sense since it's machine that we are dealing with at the end of the day. The automated activities follow one after the other. I just hope it get reversed soon. Thanks Nora.

hi mimpi Atm can goof as people are working behind all that. I once deposited a one hundred dollar bill I had got as a Christmas gift. the person put down 10.oo so I had to phone Bank of America explain the error and fill out a complaint form. it took six weeks to correct the error put I got the other 90 dollars returned to my account but it did take some time.I only hoped the teller with that kind of error in math did get fired. Yes they do make errors as they are humans and no human being is completely perfect not even bank tellers. lol.

Errors can be from both sides - human and machine. And may be the errors will get fixed eventually. But what's harrowing is the hassle, time and stress. Mine is 4000 INR, equivalent to almost 100 USD. I am glad that you got back the money. Thanks sweet Patsie.

This kind of bank scams do happen. But in my case, I can validate my point. Luckily I got the declined slip from the machine.

I faced a similar problem a few months ago with my debit card. Honestly, It got me all worked up. I made the call to the customer care center and they took the complaint and got it rectified in 3-4 days times. A colleague of mine reported the same problem a few days later and I guided him through the same process. One of the glitches with technology I suppose. Good thing you registered the issue with your bank. Give it a few days, I'm sure they will resolve it.

That must have been very scary for you. I traveled to Cape Town the years before last. I wanted to take out 200 Rand from my bank account using my ATM Card. I knew mugging often occurs so therefore I used an ATM in a shop that I was familiar with back home. I got an advice slip but no money so that really upset me. I went and told one of the shop assistants. He kindly took me over to the bank but it was closed. He told them about my situation and they kindly let me in. They were able to get me 200 Rand and explain that my bank card hadn't been charged the time I was in the shop. I will always tell my banks that I am away in such and such country otherwise due to it being South Africa they might have thought it was fraud.

That's indeed scary. Things get worse if you are traveling and traveling outside your country. I think, informing the bank is sensible, which we mostly do not do. Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind while traveling abroad.

Hi mimpi, I can understand your frustration. It happens sometimes. It has happened to me a few times before, but not recently. Every time the money gets credited back to my account, though it does take sometime. The bank usually says within 7-10 days, but they mean working days, so 7-10 days usually comes to 15 days. It is good that you have the printed receipt. The bank can trace the transaction easily with the transaction number written on your ATM slip. Like other member said, sometimes it gets credited back straightaway. So check your balance once again.

I tried the cashout from a different bank ATM. that made it worse. However, I got the slip! I checked my account and it's not yet credited. It's going to take time. Thanks zralte.

For starters you did the right thing by both keeping the receipt, and calling customer service. Most banks will reverse the charges although sometimes you have to call a few times and show the decline receipt to prove that your transaction was declined. One thing that you can do is before you go in and withdraw money is to check your account balance. If there is enough then you can withdraw. Now if there is enough and the atm still declines your transaction then call your bank. Because there might be some earlier transactions that had not gone through yet so they put your money on hold.

I appreciate your response. I usually take a bill before withdrawing and another one after the cashout. That way I get to keep check of my balance. However, the declined bill did not show any amount for the record. I only got to know about the debit when I received the automated text from the bank.

hello there.. i have worked as a retail banker for JP Morgan and Chase and i hear these kinds of complaints everytime. i agree with some of the people here that the error could be yours or the machine itself. most of the time there are glitches with the system that causes this kind of error. or maybe the system is updating which happens over the weekend. best thing to do here is for you to file a complaint (ehich you already did), be patient to wait until the next business day and last but not least, the most important thing is to check if it got credited back to your account. if it didn't, just call customer service back again i am sure retail bankers will be happy to attend to your concern.

I haven't faced any such issues so far. These sometimes do happen due to minor technical inconsistencies. The best security measure we can adopt is to preserve the receipt of all the transactions atleast for a month's time or until the time we are sure the transaction is valid. I appreciate the way you responded after getting the message. Good that you had the declined transaction slip. Wish your money gets reversed soon.!

It happen quite often nowadays among banks, may be this is part of the tactics for the banking industry to hit on unsuspecting account holders to keep pace with their annual billion dollar profit amid this economic downturn. I am glad you did keep your declined receipt handy, so now the bank teller can't debit you and claim you actually withdrawn the money from the ATM

That's scary but I know true. I usually tuck in all the bills inside my roomy handbag and sort them out on Sundays. I am glad that I did not throw it. Now, i will have to photocopy the receipt. They go blank after a few days. Thanks lampar.
