I myself liked Tom Baker the best of the older series. He was the one I saw first when I started watching Doctor Who. He was great. All the doctors have always shown humor in their dialog. Each actor lent their own style to the performance of the role. I do happen to like how Christopher Eccelson did and how David Tennant is doing now. They are indeed geared more for a younger generation, but I do like it just the same. I would expect a long running series to allow their character performances to evolve and change with the culture. This is how the series has maintained its longevity and legions of fans.

I wish I could say that I've been watching Doctor Who for years, but I only discovered the show a little over a year ago.
I've heard it said that your first Doctor will always be your favorite. Christopher Eccleston was my first and will remain my favorite although I can understand why some wouldn't like him. He was a bit "bruske" to say the least. I have learned to live with David Tennant as I do believe that he's a wonderful actor (having seen his portrayal of Casanova) and brings more of a sense of fun to the role than Eccleston did. I have to admit though, to being a bit distressed by the last episode that I caught where Rose Tyler exits the show. I actually found myself crying over that, and more than a little distressed over the woman in the bridal gown being aboard the Tardis suddenly. I understand that this is part of the whole Doctor Who experience, but I have to say that I find it a little alarming to come to love the characters that you're watching only to have them suddenly replaced by someone new and unfamiliar that can change the whole dynamic of the show.
I'm not going to stop watching the show, but I am a bit worried about liking it still with the whole new lot to get used to.

To be honest the two new doctors have put me off watching Doctor who, in the past I would have never missed an episode but since Eccleston and Tennant have been doctors I've not really bothered with it. I miss John Pertwee and Patrick Troughton. Thank you for your excellent response, appreciated.

Wow! Deffo, that would be great, especially if they started showing the really old episodes with Patrick Troughton, I wonder why they haven't done that as yet, it would be extremely popular, although I would be glued to it. Since getting sky I've been glued to Voyager, Stargate and Malcolm in the middle!

I wish I'd been watching from the start. I have never seen any of the older Doctors. Wish I could find them for rent on video, but I haven't seen anything like that in my local stores. Wish sci-fi channel would run the whole series!

Tom what's-his-name - you know, the one with the scarf. The current doctor isn't too bad either, I think the show as a whole has improved hugely.

I really hated Dr Who until Christopher Eccelson became the Dr and i really started to watch it. I didn't like David Tennant to start with but ... he's growing on me lol
All the old Dr Who's have been shown on Sky on a sunday morning, my other half has been driving me mad cos he gets up early to watch them all. He's a big Dr Who fan and loves them all.
This reminds me... My mum knows Jon Pertwee he's stayed at our house about 15 years ago. Mum used to do a lot of work for the Bone Marrow charity and he came to open one of their big money raising dos

I grew up with Peter Davison as "my" Doctor, so he was my favourite for many years. However, having had chance to view the majority of stories (save those sadly missing from the BBC) I have to say that Jon Pertwee is probably my favourite. He was definitely the most accessible of the Doctor's characters, and carried a real warmth and compassion.
Additionally, I do feel that Colin Baker was underrated, probably due to him being given a large number of decidedly average stories. Shame, as he definitely had potential and had a great on-screen presence.

I have two favorite doctors, david tennant and christopher eccleston, both have a sarcastic sense of humour to the show, which makes it a lot more appealing to the younger generation.

I like many US fans always preferred Tom Baker as he was really the first Doctor we saw. Plus he's done the most episodes. But I'd have to agree with you about Pertwee. He's awesome, and I like him at least equally as much as Tom.

Forgot to add that I met both Tom and Jon. Met Jon a couple of times in fact and he was always very gracious and a really kind man.

I was just thinking about asking this question when I saw that you already asked it. I first got hooked on doctor who with tom baker. I have never looked back. These new doctors are putting a new twist onto the doctor who series. I am liking them very much.
