I see lots of people driving with there dogs sitting on there laps hanging their heads out the window or sitting in the back of a truck. It always worries me when I see that cause I think they could see a cat or another dog and just jump out the window or the back. I also worry they might jump out at me, you never know. Also it's very distracting having your dog sit on your lap while you driving. I don't think it's all that smart

I actually have a sat belt attachment that is made for my dog. I do not like having her in the car unprotected, just as I would not bring a child in the car unprotected. You can buy these are major pet shops or online for your dogs. More people should be investing in one of these and take responsibility for their pet's lives.

I see that alot here where I live dogs in the bed of pick up trucks the dogs arent tethered in any way I have seen them jump out at stop lights and I wonder what the owners were thinking when they allowed them to ride back there and the little dogs on the laps of drivers just irritates me so do small children on the laps of drivers how can you possibly have total control of your vehicle with someone or something on your lap while driving not to mention what would happen to the dog or child should you get into an accident.

Hi missybear. My dog Pixie, used to like to sit on my lap while I drove, she wasn't so much a distraction as she was in the way when I needed to use the clutch or steer. I limited her to only be on my lap when I was home and driving up the driveway. Many farmers use working dogs and it's now illegal not to have your dog secured on the back of the truck. Many owners do not protect their dogs from the extreme hot temps but that's another issue. Lucy loves to stick her head out the window, but she is well behaved. My friends dog would be diving out the window every five minutes if she were not tied up. Even a falling leaf sets her off, barking madly and scrabbling to go get 'em...she's tiny but she chases cows and wild pigs...she's very bossy and not afraid of anything.

I always worry about that too. I have seen some dogs chained up in the back of a pick up and I'm thinking.. what if there is a wreck and the chained animal is thrown and breaks its neck.. what if they try to jump out of the truck and hang themselves? What if they jump out the window and get killed... what if they get down under their feet and cause an accident? I had a cat get under my feet once and I couldn't use my pedals.. that taught me to NEVER drive with a lose cat in the car.

It's scary when a car drives past you and you have some big dog barking at you ready to jump out

It is too easy to train animals to behave. It is the irresponsible people that give pet owners a bad reputation.

I worry about this too. I also worry that the wind could blow something in their eyes. Believe it or not, I have known people who let their babies ride in their lap. A sudden stop and that baby or pet could be crushed between you and the steering wheel.

Hi there Missy Bear! You're right. That is very distracting. I guess if people really need to bring their pet along, they should have a carrier or maybe another person to hold it, at least.

When my friend takes her dog she always puts her in a carrier, it's safer that way
