There's been a lot in the media lately about how bread is not as good it used to be, as it stops people from losing weight, causing digestive problems etc. this apparently goes the same with pasta and white rice. I'm finding that I get the most problems with bread - are there any alternatives?

Recently we started substituting spaghetti squash for pasta with our spaghetti sauce. We still use the same sauce with meat and a lot of vegetables, but rather than putting it over pasta we cook the spaghetti squash and put the sauce over that. It tastes really good, but at first it is a little weird, because the texture is different - pasta is softer and not crunchy like spaghetti squash.

I've done that too. I love spaghetti squash. I haven't had it in over 10 years because they don't sell it here. I'm going to have to grow it myself.

I have never grown it, but if I wasn't able to buy it here, then I would definitely try growing it myself. After reading this again, now I have a craving for spaghetti over spaghetti squash.
I have to go to the store anyway, so I think that I will pick it up and cook it for dinner (probably tomorrow) as long as I can find it - the last time I was in the store they did not have any, and I had to made due with regular pasta.

Well white bread is really unhealthy so better eat wholewheat bread if you are concerned about your health but if you don't really like bread anymore then try oats but make sure you use rolled oats. It is a very healthy alternative to bread and rice. You can add up fruits to eat to make it even healthier.

Well not all bread could be bad.
Wholewheat bread is good. Just make sure you are eating wholewheat bread and you can't go wrong. Even with pasta just make sure it is wholewheat pasta and for rice, choose brown rice over white rice. Those are the best alternatives you could ever have.

There are several kinds of bread and while white wheat bread is mostly carbs, you can learn to make your own whole grains bread with lots of protein. Pasta is also made with refined white that leaves out the protein and the fiber. But as you need carbs in your diet, you can eat a reasonable amount of pasta with a sauce with meat or a piece of chicken. Rice can be eaten also as a side dish with veggies or meats of different kinds.

Just as an experiment see how you react to home-made bread. There's a bunch of additives in the store-bought stuff that you might be reacting too as well.

I agree with Tamirs. Corn is a good and cheaper alternative to bread and pasta. And I think it's good for your digestive system too. Problem however is your limited on how to prepare corn, unlike pasta. But I've always believed that moderation is key. I mean, eating just the right amount of rice, pasta, bread or whatever, or a little less maybe, can still help you lose weight.

If you are a bread eater, it is very difficult to replace : rice and buckwheat pancakes can do it, but you will lack your bread. For digestion, breads made with whole flour or rye bread are better.
You can eat less pastas by replacing some by semolina or bulgur, and bulgur can replace rice in all recipes needing rice.

Hello Bellapop, here in the Philippines ,government is pushing our fellow countrymen to eat Corn as alternative for rice and bread, these according to them as a lot of vitamins and nutrients.Corn also is much cheaper compare to rice and wheat breads.
You can make kind of like rice made of corn and we tried that once, taste good and you'll feel that at small quantity you'll get full easily. :-)

If you are really conscious about losing weight, why not having regular exercise or do jogging early in the morning.. You might lose some weight and of course minimize eating bread and pasta. Bread, pasta and white rice were you have mentioned earlier are one of the good source of energy. It needs our body a stable source of energy, and if your most problems with bread from losing weight or having digestive problems. Try eating boiled sweet potatoes for a change..
