My dogs are never on a leash nor have i caged them at all. They are friendly with people who i welcomed in the house. They are trained dogs that know what to do and how to behave.
I have seen the dog whisperer and have learned from that. I have also learned a lot from the breeder where i got my dogs how to properly take care of them and what food are good for them. She's one of the most reputable breeders in the country who even gets her dogs adopted by American people who likes to show their dogs. So i trust her more than i trust my vet. Most of the vets are only for your money so i always consult my breeder before following what my vet tells me.

Where i live we are required to have dogs on a leash and i think that is a good idea because some dogs will run away if you don't. I don't like putting my dog in a cage at all but i do it to punish her when she goes bathroom in the house. No i wouldn't do this to my best friend if i didn't have to. We put the dog in a cage because that's the punishment like when u send a child to their room for punishment. I hate doing it and hubby hates it as well ,but we do it and then we feel bad and sometimes i cry when putting the dog in the cage. I wish my dog didn't run away if not on a leash so i wouldn't have to do that because she doesn't like it or the cage which i also wish i didn't have to do.

We also have an ordinance requiring that dogs should be on a leash primarily for the safety of the people. It's a good thing though that we have a fenced house so it isn't necessary to tie up our dog or cage him. Although we occasionally do this when we have visitors since not all are comfortable with dogs.

I think people keep their dogs on leashes to stop them integrating with other dogs, or to protect them for being attacked by other bigger dogs. Also dogs are required to be on a leash to stop them from jumping up at children or even bigger dogs that can bite! If a dog is off it's leash and goes over and attacks someone then the dog will put down, so a leash is preferable for both the owner and any passer by!

as much as i'd like to cage them up because i hate seeing their poop in our living room and they just pee everywhere, I just can't do it. i believe they should always be on a leash. besides, if we cage them, they make too much noise. noise pollution annoys me more than the filth they make. :D

That's one of the drawbacks of having a pet dog loose. They eventually take a dump or pee in places they shouldn't. Some say they can be trained not to. I guess in a sense it's true. Our dog would always bark and looks at the door whenever he wants to relieve himself. But when outside, he still chooses any spot that pleases him :( And they do tend to make more noise when they're caged or even when they're chained up.

When we had a dog, we did really kept it on a leash so I am really not guilty when I saw your topic haha :) In my opinion, leashes are not really bad for dogs. Since dogs do tend to wander around, a leash is practical to keep your dog by your side. If there was no leash, then a lot of dogs would get lost and they might end up as food or they might end up with a new mean owner.

It really wasn't my intention to make people feel guilty . I was just amused at the irony of it - we referring to dog as man's best friend and stuff. Although my dog isn't on one, I do however see the necessity of having dogs leashed especially when we take them for walks

We need to be a good citizen, so follow the rules of law that dogs should be in cage or keep them with collar. This is also for public safety, since some dogs are vulnerable. Taking considerations of stray dogs on the streets, we need them to be bitten. The awareness of not inflicting with rabies.

I know there are some places that have leash laws. People are required to have their dogs on a leash. Sometimes having the leash as a safety procaution sometimes for the dog. There are people who don't like dogs and would do anything to harm them. Keeping your dog on a leash or in a caged in yard helps keep them safe.

We purposely bought a house with a tall fence and a big backyard for our dog so that she can run around freely and safely in our back yard. If we take her out for a walk though we do put her on a leash for her own safety and for the safety of other dogs. One of neighbors lets their little 10 pound dog run loose and it drives me nuts. We were out walking our dog once who is a 60 pound German Shepherd that stupid little dog ran up and attacked my dog. My dog could kill that dog with one bite. Luckily my dog did not bite her she just swatted her away with her paw, and the little dog ran after that, but my dog clearly wanted more and I fear that my dog would have surely killed that little dog if she did not have a leash on or if I had lost hold of the leash. I think if you are going to have a dog you should have a yard that it can run free in and a fence to keep it safely inside.

Yeah, I agree with you. Our dogs should really have a wide area to run around. It's actually healthier for them than just walking them around the block. But I guess not all can afford homes with large backyards. We have a big enough yard but it isn't fenced so we can't let our dog run around it lest he goes out on the streets, and that's not allowed where I live.

Hi Beamer! I feel so guilty about this. i wish i dont have to cage up my dogs. There are 2 problems i have with them. One is that if i dont lock them up, they fight whenever they get a chance. Second is due to sanitation. I feel guilty whenever there are topics here about caring for your pets. Many times i wished i should not have bought them because i couldnt even play with them often due to my busy schedule.

Where I live, we're required to have dogs put on a leash. I understand why they had to impose that. There were several incidents of dogs biting pedestrians. And there's also the possibility of rabies since people having non-breed dogs or mongrels don't bother to have their pets get anti-rabies shots. I know it's not a good analogy, but it just really makes me wonder why we do such things.

I totally agree, I am dog person and since I was little I have always had a dog at times more than one at a time and never have I kept them locked up on in a cage or on a leash. It's not considered to be animal cruelty, but to me it is, why would you want an animal to have it locked up on a cage, they should be free to move around, explore, play and more that's the fun of having a pet. If you train it well, there isn't a reason why they should be locked up.

Yes, dog that are properly trained and have the proper shots are not dangerous to people. So there's no reason why they should be caged up. I can't blame the authorities for imposing ordinances requiring dogs to be put on a leash. I blame those irresponsible dog owners since they were really the cause why the ordinances were made in the first place.
