Abandoned dog, how can anyone be so cruel?

My roommate and I took his dog for a walk to the park last night, and while there, we made, well, his dog made, a discovery.
She was running off leash and spotted a dog in the brush by the hill. She wasn't barking at him like she usually does with other dogs, so we knew something was wrong.
As we got closer, we knew for sure that it was another dog, and that there was something wrong with him as he was stumbling around in the thick grass.
I called my other roommate after a failed attempt to contact TAS, and he came over with the car, and we took this poor dog home.
Someone had abandoned this dog, he was weak, frail and malnourished. He was muddy, wet and matted severely. He'd clearly been out for a while.
When we brought him home, he lay down in the kitchen, shivering, but finally warm and able to dry off.
He couldn't stand for long periods of time, and was peeing constantly all over the floors.
I tried making more calls, but there was no one open that time of night, so I had to wait until this morning.
The poor dog was dehydrated.
But he felt safe here, I think he slept less than I did, and I only slept a few hours, continually waking when he moved around or peed again.
I called TAS around 9am, and they got here quickly to pick the dog up. The driver put the dog on a rolling stretcher and wheeled him out the door to the truck.
I will be calling later to find out if they had to put him down, I really hope they don't have to. I'm hoping for the best but expecting to hear the worst in this case.
This dog felt love though, that's what he needed. He craved human contact so much that he'd try to follow me if I went outside or to the bathroom. He didn't want to be alone.
He's an old dog, and I hope that he has a chance to recover and find a home to live out his remaining years.
It's not fair that someone would just abandon their dog in a time of need, to toss him out like he's trash. People like that don't deserve to have a pet, they never do.
I'm shattered that I had to find this dog the way I did, but if we hadn't gone out last night when we did, he would have died out in the rain, without anyone knowing he was there.

Your story made me shed some tears. I feel so pity for the poor old guy! How could anybody abandon an old dog, after being together for more than 10 years?
Yet, there is a chance for the dog to be lost, maybe he is too old and he can't remember the way back home. You should have put some posters in the neighborhood, maybe somebody is looking for him.
I hope you'll find out good news when you call TAS. Have you thought about adopting him yourself? Maybe you were meant to be together.

We're looking at fostering him, but I'll be posting that in another discussion, I have more news about the dog.

I would have loved to have kept him, but we already have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Our place isn't quite big enough to have kept him as well. And we don't have the money for the vet care, otherwise we would have looked after him ourselves.

I'm glad you found him too. I'm hoping for the best, but even if it turns out to be for the worst, atleast that dog was able to feel a little bit of love, before the end. If it works out for the best, then your little bit of love was a preview for the wonderful family life to come with a new home and a loving family. I'm glad you found him.

People for whom the old dog has become a burden, should never think of keeping a dog at all at the first place. The poor dog must have served the master throughout his life, just to get an abandonment at the last part of his life where he requires most attention?!
It is really a painful incident! Thanks got you accidentally found this dog and did your best to give him the confidence back in the human race which other wise the dog would have lost once for ever because of such cruel treatment done to him by a human being whom he must have adored for last so many years!
May God bless you for your kind , humanly gesture dear friend!

Oh, I hate to read stuff like this 'cause it hurts my heart so much. Good on you for helping him get into some warmth and love even if for just a little bit. There's no telling just how sick he is. I hope too that he can be saved but it doesn't sound too good.

Stories like this break my heart. These poor creatures do not do anyting to deserve to be treated like this and why someone would, I will never understand. I feel bad if I have to tell my dog to stop doing something he isn't suppose to do or he has to go out in the rain to use the bathroom. The sad part about this? There are thousands of other dogs and cats out there in this same position. All they ever want is to be loved and then they get treated like this by the person (or people) who are suppose to protect and love them. Hopefully they will give this dog a chance at life and will find him a good home to live the rest of his years. Let us know how it turns out if you can.

I feel your outrage over what happened to this poor dog. Sadly this happens all the time. It makes me so mad that someone could be so heartless to such a beautiful, loving animal. I have three dogs and two cats of my own. They are not perfect and from time to time I feel overwhelmed taking care of them all, but I wouldn't abandon any of them. They have all given me years of love and they are always happy to see me. I feel if you take on the responsibility of a pet that responsibility doesn't end when they get sick or old. You don't just dump the poor animal somewhere and drive away. You take care of them just like you would any other member of your family.

What can we do? It's part of some humans. Don't forget some people don't born with that love for animals. For example, if you go hunting with your father since you have like 10 years old and you get used to watch animals dying you wont have so much pitty of them. But yes it's very bad thing having a dog and suddently leaving him like he was never there.

In my country it happens all the time. If you walk on streets, you can se many abandoned dogs. I can't understand how someone can be so heartless, to let these beings suffer from hunger and cold. I think those people should not be allowed to have dogs or other pets anymore.
