It is very common to today for men to wear shorts, long shorts, short shorts, above the knees, below the knees, but I have worked it all out. My calculation is, shorts that come down to the knee but above are long shorts but shorts that go below the knee down to the calves are short longs...so there you go there is long shorts and short longs..the most popular I would say are short longs..puzzle solved

My, how us simple creatures have had you guessing for so long! I don't wear anything but longs (even on the beach!) - whether jeans or dress trousers, as the occassion permits. I remember during the 1980's my father used to wear short dress shorts - deep blue, but always with long white socks, folded once just below the knee - quite fashionable on him too! I thought - what's the point of wearing short shorts at all if you're only going to wear hot socks up to the knee? Might as well stick with longs! I think the short shorts grew into long shorts to prevent various parts of the male anatomy sometimes protruding when one sat down. This was a frequent occurrence in school sports sessions when it came to sitting down on the lawn after a game. I haven't seen the short longs catch on here yet, but I'm not at the beach much these days - are you? Or are these worn on the streets? Maybe even to work?

Ahhh! Maybe Melbourne has changed somewhat since I last visited for a conference in 2004? I simply cannot imagine all those black business suits I saw so many of when I was down there with short longs on down below! Or maybe I was in the less flamboyant part of Melbourne CBD? Maybe Melbournites are trying to immitate Queenslanders? Help! My poor head is spinning!

I had to read your post twice just to figure out those two types of shorts :) I'm not however sure if the short longs are the more popular ones. The younger ones do prefer them, the adults wear however the long shorts. The short longs wouldn't be practical to use for a lot of sports activities, and I feel they're for teens. I mean, I rarely see adult professionals sporting short longs even for their casual wear. Well, where I'm from, that is. I guess it would also depend on the country you live in.

Both are very popular here in Australia but I have to laugh at the ones that wear the short longs and then have thick socks as well, and a lot of men here are even wearing short longs in winter...

And then there are those who wear sandals with the thick socks or worse...thongs. So embarrassing. My friend wears long pants but he wears socks and thongs.

How about this? Shorts that come upto the kness are half long pants and shorts that go below the knees are full half pants. Its the same thing but put in another way.

Nowadays we have the Bermudas which are neither short or long but somewhere inbetween.Could we call them transgender pants since both males and females wear them? Then there are the short short pants which end up halfway at the thighs. They could be called long undies.

How about we bring football into it & make all sorts of lengths along the lines of "full forwards", "centre-half-backs", centre-half-forwards", "rovers", "rucks", etc? After all, we do have to keep people guessing!

LOL, years ago the short longs would have been called nickers. Some of the shorts out now a days for the men to be are rather ugly. I just don't see how they can wear them. Do they actually look in the mirror after they get dressed or what. Have a nice evening Lilac.

So, lilac you have unleashed the designer in you! Did you work out a plan on its timing as well? Just being silly, couldn't have been that. Or you ARE a designer whose bio is either incomplete here or I didn't take the time to check out? As far as my own like: I want the shorts as shorts-just short & above the knees! I don't feel tidy [know its not figured out to be one] with either long shorts or the short longs. I get a sense of being awkward. . To that extent, I had no puzzle before me.

Now I didn't know there was a puzzle to be solved regarding men's shorts. How did you even come to the question? I go to the boys' department when I buy shorts. I like the cargo style with the big pockets and they just don't make women's shorts with those type of pockets. So, I get the boys' styles and am a happy little camper.
