Are some of Americans poor like that?

China
December 13, 2011 6:52am CST
As most of Chinese know,Americans are very rich, and they can live a wealthy life, many of us are extremely jealous. But 2 days ago,the TV news told us that an American citizen killed herself after she shot her son and her daughter! And the reason was just she could not be given her relief fund! Can Americans be that poor?I never believe it.Please share what you know,my friends.

Hi Sweetie. Not all Americans are rich the only riches we have that is that we have freedoms that a lot of countries don't have. There are many more stories then this one that poor woman couldn't bare anymore many Americans are homeless don't even have a place to lay their head not a warm coat to put on their backs. No not all Americans are rich there are many of us that make just barley enough to make it from one end of the month to the beginning of the next month. There is so many horror stories about the poor in this contry. Heck as a child I remember picking fruit and cotton just to help keep a roof over our families head. Don't envy those that do have riches. Riches isn't just having money to spend Riches are your friends and families. Riches is knowing that God loves HIS children. Riches is knowing that no matter what we go through in this life God is always with us! Amen!

HI Free man, What a great answer and so so true. I barely get by financially but my girls will agree that we never "felt" poor even in the toughest times. We always had some great friends and we had each other.

In my opinion, all countries have poverty problem included the United States. In the present time, there were 16 million about 22 percent of all children poor in 2010. The United States haven't released their new date about poverty census. I am quite sure there are still million people of the United States citizen very poor. Poverty is global issues. I think each country face poverty no matter how rich the place was. I can guess the Republic of Chine is faced the largest poverty in the world, because China population reach nearly 2.5 billion people. I think each country can reduce the poverty if the govt reduce allocation for military finances and give the money to the poor. What do you think ?

I believe that government hand-outs will only create dependency. I think that education is a better way. Exactly how to handle that, I don't know.

Yes, you right bel. Human resources was the key to everything, a sustainable was the best of all. Try to have a look to my country, there are too much oils to produces, too much gold to be pick up, too much natural resources that could guarantee we will live in wealth. But the fact is, too much peoples who live under poorest line, cause too much peoples only care about themself and families. The goverment's too busy to take care theirself and their families. It's such a jerk if we talk about goverment. They think that they are a heroes, while the fact is they are the enemies.

Yes, Oldsix691418 there are many poor people in America. It is a myth that all Americans are rich. We have homeless people who live on the streets, poor people who get government assistance such as food stamps, disability assistance, etc. It just a myth you have been told about Americans being well-off, don't believe everything you hear.

I don't live in the USA but I know there is a lot of poverty there...for starters they don't have a good health care for the poor! and a lot of people live in the streets or in their cars if they are lucky to have one! it may be hard to realize that a country that spends billions and billions in space research have actually people living in abject poverty? and yet they always come forward to help other countries in crisis[ which they probably destroyed with their own weapons, any way]but they like their country to shine in the eyes of the world/or the ignorant. Today a lot of people had come to realize that America[ aka] USA is not that good after all!

Why would you think that Americans are rich? Most of us live paycheck to paycheck and are just a paycheck away from being homeless or with nothing to eat. America does have an EBT program that helps some poor people to buy food, but not every poor person qualifies to get 'food stamps'... Not everyone qualifies to get welfare who are poor.. which is why so many people in the United States live on the streets. Some people are poor because they don't manage their finances well.. they live above their means... but there are many who are poor because they can't find work, or can't find transportation to work and are too far to walk to find a job... people who live in the rural parts of the USA can have it really hard. There are rich and affluent people in every country. There are kids right here in the USA that go to bed hungry because they don't get enough food to eat. Sad but true.

I hear ya Hatley! If I were rich I would be living by myself in the home my dad built ... I'd still be able to pay the mortgage after my divorce.. but instead lost it to the bank. I'm now living as a room mate with my daughter and her hubby... yeah.. rich! I don't know why people in other countries think everyone lives like the stars on TV... I remember when people in other countries thought everyone here lived like the shows they saw on TV .. like Dallas and Falcon Crest... these are all stereotypes... we aren't rich. The only ones rich are the business moguls and the politicians. geesh!

Are you kidding me? Who told you Americans are very rich? Someone has been lying to you. We are not rich, most of us are not. They are those in Hollywood, and those with big companies who are people who are doctors and lawyers, but most of us are not. I can hardly pay my bills. But please don't let that story influence your thinking about poor people here. Most people who have very little here DO NOT take such drastic action when they are poor. That lady was mentally ill, and was probably at the end of her rope. America is filled with people barely making it. I imagine most countries are.

It's never a kidding topic,my friend! And what I had read on line made me offer such a discussion.Yes,nowadays in China most of the people are not rich though our life has changed a lot,and I am poor, too since I have to support too many famillies. I hope the gap between the poor and the rich is never too far in any places all around the world.

By looking back at your responses, I am sure you are now disallusioned of the rumor in your country that Americans are rich. I've lived as 'poor' all of my life. I've had the basic needs, food, shelter and clothing but rarely have been able to afford the luxuries. Perhaps my cat would be considered a luxury to some people but I will do without any few somethings to be able to feed and keep her. Perspective on luxuries and necessities is relative though, I suppose.

Yes. It is good news. Before, all Chinese were equally poor. Now you can get more wealthy. But of course there will be some that do not get more wealthy by choice. Not wanting to work, refusing to learn something new to earn money. Whatever the case, this is natural to being more wealthy.

The businessinsider.com informs that 46.2 million Americans are now living in poverty. The U.S. poverty rate is now the third worst among the developed nations. The number of Americans on food stamps surpassed 41 million . One out of every six Americans is now being served by at least one government anti-poverty program. 10 million Americans receive unemployment insurance. The number of Americans receiving long-term unemployment benefits has risen over 60 percent in just the past year. 28% of all U.S. households have at least one member that is looking for a full-time job. More than 25 percent of all Americans now have a credit score below 599. One out of every five children in the United States is now living in poverty. It is not surprising, The natural and the man made disasters suffered by America, very few may know. They may not lament in public but they do suffer

Not all Americans are rich. Not at all! My husband and I have been so poor we lived in our car and a tent! And now were staying with family because we dont have enough money for our own place. Things are not the way you think they are...America is having a lot of financial problems, our economy is shot and there are many people out of work...

Everywhere in this world, there are poor people but what make it different is the way the government handle these poor people. In America they are given social funds and corruption is much lesser compared to other countries and not forgetting the biased media that only present the best side of such country. This lead to people thinking that America is a country full of rich people while indeed, some hardly meet their basic needs.

Hi Oldsix, It is not unusual for this type of news to happen. Its not alway that an American is so poor. But here in the land of opportunity people seem to want more and more, and there is nothing wrong with trying to better ones self. BUt sometimes the more we get the more we want.. So many people here try to live above their means..I doubt if the only issue that mother had was the lack of relief funds..Not even positive what that means. But I would tend to think there were other issues maybe even mentally.. There are so many programs here in the USA that should keep a parent from having to result to killing themselves and their child.

Yes Americans can and are that poor. In fact most of what is televised is coming from rich americans which don't make up the majority of our people. The only difference I can see would be the amount our money is worth as to go for why people would think we are richer, but in America there are poor, homeless, and so on. Jobs aren't that easy to get and to get degrees can put people far in debt that they have to pay off for the next 10+ years.

Yeah, most of the news on TV is mostly glamorous, which is popular. And the dark side is usually covered,of course that happens in China, too,we hate it. I'm poor but I have a two-floor old building to live,so I don't want to buy a new flat in case I have to be in debt for more than 10 years!

Hi Oldsix, Well, I'm not sure where the Chinese get their "facts" from but it is not true that Americans are very rich so you guys can stop being jealous. It is true that a small percentage of them are very wealthy and then there are some that do ok. Still there is a huge amount of the population that are barely getting by. There aer many homeless people and people who can't find work. I would have to say that most Americans are far from rich.

Umm... yes. The United States has poor people. Homeless people, people who live in dumps, people who starve, etc. I don't think there's a country in the world where poverty doesn't exist, no matter how rich the country may seem overall. True, Americans do have it pretty good in comparison with other nations, but they still don't have it perfect. Not all Americans are rich.
