I got a letter in my mail box yesterday that was obviously a Christmas Card. It was addressed to a Joanne something and it was similar to Jeanie..I did notice the last name was not my present last name, but I have so many businesses and persons who contact me and get my names wrong I thought that maybe they just had it wrong. After a glance I went ahead and opened it. It was a very nice Christmas card to "Joanne" wanting to know how she was doing!I was like Oops!! Now I am not sure what to do. I think I will put it in an enevelope and send it to the original sender and explain how I opened it. I just don't feel right about tossing it in the trash!! What would you do? What's the right thing to do?

Well,as the card was delivered to You at Your address,if You want You could let the sender know about the error to avoid it happening again...You might get a penfriend out of it! When I moved in Here some Years back now,I was getting some misdelivered post..The Woman I'd bought the place from had relations who are still neighbours of mine,so in the event of any postal mixups I could have referred it to them..

I get the occasional wrong number on my phone,or on my answering machine..I've had a little of someone I don't know letting someone else I don't know about their weekend and all I have to go on is a couple of first names and no way to call them back! And a Delivery Guy arrived on my doorstep during the week with a Parcel I wasn't expecting, getting my name wrong, and getting a clearer view of his invoice, realising it was for someone a couple of houses down..!

Personally,I don't think returning the card itself should be a big priority for you..They did send it to your address,so they must have had the wrong one in the first place for you to get it when you live there and don't know the Person living there Before You (How long have you been there-before last Christmas,or since then?)-and cards always come with an envelope that's just the right size..so you're going to have to get one of suitable size (Tricky!)to fit to return it,and they'll have to leave another card without an envelope to repost it,assuming they'll get their Friend's address correct next time around..If you want to go to the trouble, just post a note to their address....or stick a note in the retaped envelope and do a "return to sender"!

I would love something like that! I have no clue who the lady is that it was addressed to. Plus they weren't even the person who lived here last I don't think. I thought it was a guy. Who knows.. but a new pen pal would be a lot of fun for sure!!

If you don't wish to waste a stamp, you could seal it up and write "return to sender" on the front and put it in your mailbox. Possibly leave a note to the postal employee that that person does not live at your address.
I get a lot of wrong mail but it's usually junk mail, which I trash. We probably get something wrongly delivered to us about each month...

OMG... :-).. Well that is how reacted when I read the whole thing. First of all, how did you get it in your mailbox, if it was not addressed to you... That will lead to nothing probably. But they will be careful in future...
Your idea of sending the card back is good too... And if you wanna do it, do it fast as Xmas is not very far... Good Luck!

Great.. There more possibilities here now...
1. It is someone whom you know and are friends with, but the other person somehow doesn't know your name correctly..
2. As it has your mailing address on it, I think it is meant for you...
3. Check the sender's name, is it familiar to you?

Yes, it had my address on it but not my name. The name looked similar to mine so I was unsure if someone I had just met simply mispelled my name or not. I willprobably get it in the mail Monday!

I've done that. I write a note indicating that I opened by mistake and put it into the appropriate mailbox if the person lived on my street. Or I've written the note, taped it up and sent it back to the post office with an additional notation that that is the wrong address for the person.

I am brutal on envelopes, so my best bet is to put it all in another envelope and send it back with a detailed message!! lol

I have the same problem with envelopes, macdingolinger! If brutality to envelopes were a crime, I'd never see the light of day! LOL! I usually rip the thing open down the side so the envelope is nearly torn in half. Might I say my wife HATES it when I do that. I have no idea why. I guess she wants me to "neatly open the flap" or something like that. That's just not gonna happen in my world. :)

Whoops!
I would be honest and tape it back up with a note saying that it was delivered to your house by mistake and you naturally opened it without looking too closely at it. This type of thing happens all the time. We have had mail brought to us my a neighbour who did the same thing and we have also opened mail mistakenly that was not addressed to us. It is a common problem, so I would not worry too much about it.

Lol! I am sure I am not the first person in the world who ever did such a thing! It would be scary if I was the only one who ever did it huh? lol! I am probably going to send it with an explanation this week. thanks!

You are right. It seems to me that you are a person who is discreet in deed and reasonable. However I don't think you opened it by mistake.Maybe the sender meant you to have it, the "Joanne" was a slip of the pen.If not, that you made sure you opened it by mistake is that you saw "I was like OOPs "which is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears.

I do not know what you mean by the song "oops" as I have not heard it. I do not listen to Britney Spears. Thanks for your response.

I would do the same thing you had done, and explain to them you thought it was addressed to you and then found it was for someone else, as it was accidently delivered to your house instead. I know I would feel bad for sure especially if it was not for someone located close to me. Hope that the other person who sent it will only understand.

For sure. I really felt bad for the lady trying to get in contact with her friend. I wish I knew her so I could get them connected back up. They appear to be older people and may not know how to use the internet to find friends and family.

why to through it away when you know where you can send it... a genuine apology will be considered and by the way it was posted to the wrong address.. so don't feel so bad about it.. In fact consider it as an opportunity to make new friends.. when sending the card back.. send another card from yourself and been in Christmas spirit..

I guess I could send her a Christmas card back. Except that I do not have any Christmas cards. I have never made that a habit. I might do it some day but I haven't so I only have Christmas cards which have already been sent to me! lol!

Hello there macdingolinger! Well, ya, i think it's better to send it back to the sender and put a note saying that the letter went to somebody else which is you. It's okay, it happened to me already, because our neighbor mistakenly put our house number on the address she sent to the sender. So, i think it's right to give it back or give it to the person who actually should own the letter, if you know the person.

I do not know the person who sent the card or the person for whom it was intended. I just didn't want some lady thinking it reached her friend and then her friend did not respond! I figure I'll send it back with an explanation this week.

In the normal course, I would have said there's nothing to feel too bad about. And then after reading through responses, I felt slightly differently. I hope this one will go in your stride. I read you saying you are not into Christmas card exchange. That being so, you could have been a little more skeptical in opening the mail, thinking it could have been a mistake. Could have been, I'm saying. Not hard. Because it should have seemed unusual & held you back.
Nevertheless, since now you know someone is expecting it to reach & Joanne might be expecting it, it is a good idea to send it back to the sender with apology.

Thank you for your response. I meant that I do not send Christmas cards. I have just never gone to that expense or given up my time to do so. I do however, recieve a lot of Christmas cards and some from businesses, that's why I went ahead and opened it because I thought it might have just been a mistake. I will probably get it in the mail back to the original sender tomorrow! I guess this year I will technically send my first Christmas card! lol!

Joanne is the one who cannot be found. The lady was sending it to this address because it was her last known address. I have been here almost 9 months now and all I know is that some guy lived here before me. So I have no idea how long ago Joanne moved!

Hi macdingolinger, Happy Holidays to you...I think you have the
correct idea in mind...If you have the lady's address just sent
it on with an explanation...I am sure she will understand and will
be happy to receive her card from the person who sent it.
Beside its a honest mistake..I've made that mistake myself..Even
with other mail...I think you are a nice person to even consider
doing the right thing...

I cannot send it on as I do not know the lady for whom the letter was intended. However, I do have the return address on the envelope and can return it to the original sender! I am planning on doing that this week!

I think it's normal to open if it's in your mailbox esp. if there is more. I am not always checking every letter comming in if the name etc is right.
If you know that person (where she is living) you can send it over there or just leave it.

I do not know the lady who it was intended for. But I can send it back to the person who sent it here by mistake. Her return address is on the envelope. I hate it that she has lost her friend's location. She really was hoping to reach her.
