Even the smallest amount of onion or leeks can be toxic to your cats. And they are just as dangerous cooked or raw, they can cause anaemia which results in the destruction of the red blood cells... Please be aware for the health of your cats.

Not just onions and leeks, but potatoes and chocolate, too - not good for cats or dogs.

I believe it's the potato skin and raw potatoes - esp. those with green. Grapes and raisins are toxic, too, to cats - don't even give a nibble of a cookie with raisins in it - or a pastry. turkey skin, anything with mold, and tomatoes and tomato plants are extremely toxic to cats. nutmeg and powdered onion and garlic - which is often included in baby foods - must be avoided, too. I think the mashed are okay as long as they were from plain dehydrated flakes or potatoes with no skin and no green spots.

I've not heard about potatoes being bad for them, what does it cause? I had one cat who loved mashed potatoes, of course I didn't give him much though. He lived to be 20+ but had some severe intestinal problems at the end of his long life.

When I first became a pet owner, I was unaware of the dangers of giving certain foods to my pets. As a result they did receive small quantities of forbidden foods from time to time. Luckily, there were never any ill effects and I have since found out that the quantities that are needed for toxicity to occur are quite high. It's always best though to err on the side of caution and not allow your pet access to these foods at all. Thanks again for the info.

It is always best to make sure your pets, both cats and dogs, are eating only food that is made for them. Table scraps are a no-no always. That way you know that they are not going to get anything that could be toxic to them. I have found a site that helps me choose the best foods for my pets. You might want to check out www.truthaboutpetfood.com. It is a gold mine of information.

Thanks for BR lady. Tonight my cat and dog are all full up of natural foods and looking at me wanting some sweets. I'll put the sweets out of sight and they'll quit begging.

I never knew this, but I can't imagine any of the cats I owned willing to eat onions. (I don't know what leeks are ) Come to think about it though I make a chicken soup that one of my cats really liked and it had onions in it. However, she would eat the chicken and other ingredients and leave the onions in her bowl. She lived to a very old age for a cat so I'm guessing she was smarter than me.

Anything made with onions in it any which way, even soup or gravies is also bad for cats. It might not seem like she is immediately ill but it could wreck havoc on her slowly. Please do not give them anything even made with onions.

Yes I have known this for awhile now and be sure not to give my cat any table scraps as you never know if there's anything in it with onions even gravies and soups. Tomato sauce too. If I absolutely know there isn't any onion powder in it or onions of any kind then I might give them a slight taste or so, But cats should only eat high quality catfood. I'm sure there are the cats outside who get table scraps but please be sure there isn't anything with onions in them whatsoever.

Only one of my cats likes table food, and on occasion I give him a few tiny bits of chicken or turkey or ham or roast beef or lunch meat - all without any added seasonings whatsoever. No skin. I cook without salt because of hubby's bp, so there's never any of that, either, on the cooked meat. The only seafood I eat are shrimp, crab, and lobster (my favorite but not often because of the price!) and he doesn't seem to care for bits of those.

Thank you for the tip, I did not know that. We have outside cats and occasionally give them table scraps. I will make sure there are no onions in what is sent out to them.
