OK, this is not for everyone, I know, but I couldn't find a "hunting" category and this is as close as I could get. Forgive me if this offends anyone. I am a hunter and I eat whatever I kill. When I kill and clean a squirrel it is just about impossible to keep from getting the hair/fur on the meat... at least for me and everyone I know who does this. As careful as I am, I can't do it. I run water over the squirrel while dressing it, but that doesn't work... ...when I was a boy, I noticed my grandfather could take the hide from a squirrel and have NO hair/fur on it. But, I didn't pay attention to how he did it. When I was in my 20's I asked him how he did it and he told me. It was really a great idea, I thought. Guess what. A couple of years later when I went hunting I FORGOT what he told me. ...does anyone know how to do this? -- dress a squirrel and keep the meat fur free. ...OK, for those of you who would never think of eating these overgrown rats, I apologize. I know for some eating a squirrel is like eating a pet. For you vegetarians, I apologize. I am a vegan most of the time, but not this year. For those who know the answer, I appreciate your response.

I was married to a hunter, fisherman and whatever other kind of game can be got, he got. I had to learn to do the cleaning of almost all of it. First you need to dunk the whole carcass in a bucket of water. That will keep the hair off of the meat. I'm not going to go through the whole procedure here, you can read it at this link: http://www.mademan.com/mm/how-field-dress-squirrel.html

Thanks. Your's was the answer I was looking for. After all these years. It was SOAKING it in water, not running water over it. I'm delighted

Welcome to mylot bruce. I personally do not know how to do what you are asking, but on the other hand, I do not condemn you for eating squirrels either. As long as you eat what you hunt it is fine by me. I wish you luck finding the answer to your question.

Hello bruce and welcome to myLot. Years ago we raised rabbits for eating. My ex would be the one to skin and butcher them. He was real good at keeping the hair from the flesh. As I remember right He would Cut the fur around the ankles (not the right term but I think you get the drift) put a slit in the back ankles then hang them up. He would then make a Slit at the rear end from one ankle to the other. Then pull the skin and turn it inside out as he pulled it toward the head. This way the fur was not going to touch the skin at all. I think that squirrel could be cleaned the same way.

I have never eaten squirrel, but have heard of people in England eating squirrel, and going looking for roadkill to eat as well. I don't think I would like ot eat these meats, but do n't have a problem with people who do eat
