How do you not let depression get the best of you, without medication? Any ideas? Would love to help some people out with some ideas of what to do & how to cope.

I think it would be best to do something to keep your mind preoccupied and to be busy with it.

I don't really have anything to keep me busy other then take care of my kids & I'm back in college so that takes up time too but both things are stressful.

if your depression level is minimum, the best medicine is music. Listen to some melodious music which makes your mind calm. After sometimes you will feel better and you can do your works with great interest.

If I'm just starting to go into the depression I can generally take a nice drive, put the windows down, get fresh air & listen to music which helps, but the longer I go without my medicine the harder that has been for me to let all the stress & depression go.

I do a lot of meditation, yoga and go to nature if I stay at home too long or not doing anything, it will come I also am taking new courses that are within budget and planning to get a new job next year my previous employer couldn't pay my 3 mths wage because they had customer not paying but I will keep contacting them for it so in a way I keep my mind and body busy, plus it's also healthy meditation and yoga are also cheap. I don't need equipment or specific clothes. just a small corner, a cushion, loose clothing and silence :)

if you are in the US and an unemployed mom of two you can get help from welfare to pay for a doctor qu alified in depression or go to a free clinic , there are ways here in my country to get help when you are the sole mom, your kids should be a good thing for you not just an ugly stress., also you can choose not to let stress mess you ups. as an elderly diabetic w3oman I have used this with real luck I imagine a huge plastic bubble arou nd me that lets me breathe but does not let stress or depression in at all. its called guided imagery and it was taught to me by a nurse diabetic educator. get help if you are in the US if other country do check to see if there is not some sort of welfare bureau for moms who are alone raising their children and unemployed.if youo have a husband anywhere he should be p aying child support right now. do not just sit and maon about depression look for help as how in hell can you do a decent jopb of raising your kids if you are sunk in depression and look there are lots of people worst off than you so do not just sit and bemoan your problems get help for you and your children now.

I also feel depressed sometimes, for my husband is working away from us for three years now, and sometimes, I am really feeling alone and don't know what to do, and when I feel depressed, I just pray and talk to God heart to heart, just like I am talking to my best friend, cry out loud while praying. And after that, I feel relieved and okay. Maybe, you just need a friend whom you can trust and ready to listen to you. You may also join a core group in the church where they can help you by listening to your problems that makes you feel depressed, emotional help is very good specially when you are feeling depressed.

There is no easy answer to depression. Medicine can only deaden the emotions and then only for a short time. Talking to other people can and does help, and you have already taken the first step by being on this site. I lost 2 wives to cancer and I still have black days, but I am no longer on medicine and have found new friends. It is hard but Iknow you will overcome your problems. I wish you all the best for the future.
