I have been hitting the gym since new year and its 4 days now my trainer has asked me to take supplements so tat i can put on good shape very soon. He has advised me to take a supplement by the name WHEY PROTEIN it increases the stamina and gives u muscles in a very short period it seems. But some of my friends said its harmful to health and the muscle gained through supplements will go off easily if u discontinue ur workouts even for a very short period? Is it true and is it good or bad if i take supplements? will there be any side effects? Thanks in advance

It probably won't hurt you at all as long as you are consuming a healthy, balanced diet along with the supplement. I take a whey supplement when I am working out - but only take it like one time a day after the work out just to help rebuild muscle. But you should ask a doctor first.

I use Jillian Michaels whey protein because it has more natural ingredients. And I know you can use it to substitute a meal if you are wanting to lose weight, and build muscle. Hers is safe I cannot vouch for some of the other brands!

They say that when you are in doubt ask the expert - so i guess you should ask for a doctor's opinion about it. I presume those gym people are not medically trained so it would be better to consult a doctor about it, to be sure that it's safe.

Doctors generally say No. (May be it's because they are afraid of losing a customer.) And generally too, we don't know what do they process while preparing the supplements. So, it's better not to rely too much on supplements. Occasional intake must be ok.

Wouldn't it be a better thing not to take those supplements and just wait for the nice result of the gym exercises. That way, it would be natural and not lose it after.

In general, supplements taken for a short period are not that harmful. However, some muscle building supplements are said to have contain Steroids. So, it is better to make clear of the ingredients about what we are consuming.

hi my friend,i don't know weather i am late to your discussion, according to me it is better to avoid such supplement unless you are planning for a body building competition. To maintain a normal fitness and healthy body it is good to workout in gym,do some stretch-outs and also advisable to practice yoga. Here in you case instead of whey protein you can add 2-3egg white ,soya protein and other protein rich foods in your diet.
