Disclaimer:This one will be gross and not for the faint hearted ,so maybe they should take no further part in this discussion .Oh and this isnt asking that question ---for those of you who thought I as asking about that!!!!! (You know yourselves lol). Well its flu season again and I find myself a victim as I am sure many of you have too from time to time .Now we all know that flu produces a lot of what my fifth form biology teacher call "phlegm" .Now the question is what do you do with the phlegm that is produced ,do you always pit it out or do you just swallow . What if you are not in a position where you can reach to a bathroom ? Oh and for those persons who may be shy in expressing that they do ,it has a lot of protein . So be truthful now I wont talk ...Do you swallow!

Ha ha ha! Well, you gotta do what you gotta do at that time . . . no one WANTS to swallow, but sometimes you don't have a choice - it just happens. I blow my nose or spit out whatever I can - and often, especially if it's the runny kind. But sometimes there isn't a tissue (or sleeve - ha ha) handy - so what can you do.

Your discussion reminds me of my friend who sneezed in class once - she covered her mouth/nose and the stuff got ALL OVER HER HAND!! I remember that scenario well for some reason . . . I've just never seen that much gooey ickiness from one sneeze - ha ha!! And if I remember, none of us had tissues - so she had to wipe her hands on some notebook paper - ha ha!!

I spit that stuff out as quickly and discreetly as possible. I NEVER swallow it. That would be counter productive. If my body is forcing me to cough it up, I see no reason to swallow it and put it back into the system, so to speak. If I can not get to a restroom, and do not have an empty fast food cup or container handy, or lack a tissue, well then, I am not above spitting it out on the ground. I would rather folks think I am undignified than to swallow that junk!

I swallow. I won't be very ashamed to admit it because actually the newest method in preventing more spread of the disease is to just swallow it. The bacteria in mucus die with the gastric juices. It's kind of eeky, I know, but it's really a better way than to spit it out and spread it to other people. Your own mucus won't harm you provided that the germs have been killed by the stomach juices.

We are alike in that endeavour ,I am not asheamed to say I am sorry .I guess I found out from early that any bacteria was killed in the gatric juices and also lymphocytes .Thanks for responding

Noooo, I have my tissues. If I don't bring it, I'll go to the bathroom even if it's far. Swallow it is the last and hardest choice :D

This is a flu season, yes it is. And i got one! I've been sick for days now, and has a runny nose. And now, i have this phlegm when i cough, It taste salty. I've experienced coughing with my hands, when i looked at it, there it is, some phlegm. haha. So, everytime i have cough, i try not to forget to bring some tissues with me. Let's think about it people: phlegm comes from your lungs, or more accurately from your trachea, Wehn you cough it up it dislodges and lands in your throat or the back of your mouth. When you swallow it goes down your esophagus and into your stomach. Therefore it's been cleared from your lungs and in effect you've accomplishes the same goal as spitting. you've removed the phlegm from the trachea. I search online for medical proof that swallong phlegm was detrimental to your health and found none. Everything that i found backed up my belief that it doesn't matter whether you spit or swallow, just as long as you remove the phlegm form the trachea. It's gross, yes it is. But if you have no choice, you have to swallow it.

yes, i try to search online, to see if there will be some problem if you swallow your phlegm. Luckily, they've found none. But i think, If you have some problems with your stomach, like if you have infection in your stomach, and try to vomit, and accidentally in goes to your trachea, or trapped there, then there will be problem. The bacteria from your stomach might go to your lungs. And you'll get some lungs disease because of that bacteria. If you swallow your phlegm, you'll just digest it, even it has a lot of bacteria. That's what i know.

For me it actually depends on if I have any kind of tissue available. You see, I tend to spend a lot of time outside of my house and when I don't have any tissue available, then I will swallow it. However, if I do have tissue available, then I will spit into the tissue. However, one thing that I absolutely cannot stand is for people to spit it onto the ground. That absolutely grosses me out.

I don't get that much phlegm since I blow my nose a lot, but the times I do get phlegm and I try spit it out. Sometimes I swallow, but mostly by accident. If I was stuck in bed and couldn't get up, I always bring a cup or trash can to spit in. If I was in a public place, I would still spit. I would find some grass and make sure no one was staring at me and spit. Not like some other people I've seen spit on the parking lot.
