It just goes to show that no matter what we do things will change for the worse as time goes on. and several people think its ok. so maybe its just me getting old. what do you think? http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/01/18/modern-family-f-word/?xid=email-top25-today-%27Modern+Family%27+airing+F%2Dbomb+episode+despite+protests NOT A REFERRAL

Fortunately......TVs have come with built in censorship since the first set rolled off the assembly line.......it's called the on/off switch. .......the vast majority of TV sets also give you the option to CHANGE THE CHANNEL! BTW.....I watched the episode (LOVE Modern Family), and they showed a real life situation, that real families inevitably deal with at some point or another, and handled it in a humorous way......NO lightning came down from the sky.....the little girl DID NOT burst into flames.....and it was, as always, pretty dang funny.

Yes, we forget about the availability of the "off" button and the channel changer! Shows like this have aired for decades because it's a very real situation that most parents encounter. It's a shame it's such a foul word they are representing but the ones they used back in the 60's and 70's were considered just as bad then. And they, too, were bleeped or merely alluded to.

you are right. but parents have enough to deal with without the media constantly makeing it harder. since making this discussion, i have seen that yes they just suggested she said the word. i didnt see the episode. its just a shame that everything kids really enjoy is getting less and less a good learning tool for good things. you can turn it off or change the channel, but some kids have a tv in their room or you may be in another room. oh well

I so agree sconibear. Its just that simple; if you don't want to watch it, then turn it off. If enough folks start turning the set off, then the powers that be will have to make some changes. I did not see the episode, just the promos for it. I am assuming that they did not actually allow that word to be heard. Everyone who has ever had a child has to deal with that situation at some point.

hi bunnybon I read all that and actually the child is really saying fudge but the word will be blurred so the reaction of the parents will portray that she shocked them and actually said the F word. the fcc will not allow cursing so even if she had actually said that they would cut it out so it would not air. I agree so many people even here in mylot throw the f word around cutting corners so it does not get cut off by mylot but the intent is there,it to me is one of the ugliest of swear words ranking right up there with cussing that takes the name of the Lord in vain. I hate cursing in any form specially the f word.

you know i just looked at tv schedule and realised. its not airing tonight like i stated. seems im a day late. anyway, yes, i read where it said she'd be saying fudge, but i just think its a way of keep inching things like this into tv. its like the old saying. give an inch and soon it will turn into a mile

I don't think it's a big deal, they don't actually use the F word. It's representative of a real life situation. Kids swear, you deal with it.

Hatley; It is strange that while reading these posts, I was sitting here thinkingthat the two words my blessed mother absolutely would not tolerate, even after we became adults was to use the Lord's name in vain and that "f" word. I don't like either of them myself. A man I knew was horrible at taking the Lord's name in vain. Every time he said that it got to me and I would have to tell him that God didn't damn anything. His word says that He made this world and He didn't send His son into the world to condemn it, but rather to save it through him.

I went on the "Parents Television Council" website. These people are nuts, there is a whole list of what they consider "good" shows and "bad" shows. Who are they to dictate what is good and bad? I think that if you don't like the content of a show, don't watch, it's pretty simple. There's no reason to impose what you think is morality on everyone else. These people have way too much power. They can try to wrap their children in bubble wrap, and try to keep their whole worlds "G" rated, that's not how things work. If it's an implied "f" word on TV, I think it's a learning opportunity to discuss why there was such a reaction to it, and why it's not a good thing to do.

bonbon, i total agree that children should not be bubble wrapped. they should know about things that they should not be doing etc. and ive heard that this particular show was about teaching why they should not say these things. yet, there are still to many shows, media tv things that make kids think some things like that are exceptable. for parents that are caring enough to raise their kids decent it just makes their job harder, someone needs to take a stand. especially when it comes to things our kids are exposed to every day.

As a parent, I have a duty to make the right choices for my children until they reach the age and maturity level to make decisions for themselves. I am grateful for the television ratings and the people who have developed them, as their efforts make my job easier. As long as certain words and situations are merely implied, I do not have a problem with it. However, some tv shows go a little far with things. I agree that some televison is good for "learning opportunities" but there is a line that should not be crossed. Do you have children? If so, then you know that little ones will repeat EVERYTHING they hear and imitate what they see. Its very hard for parents to teach their children acceptable language and behavior when there is so much bad stuff on tv. I try very hard to monitor what my kids see and hear, but no parent can control it all, so again, I appreciate those tv ratings and censors who help decide what is proper for children to view.

Apparently they got some complaints when the episode aired last night. The director said the young actress was instructed to say 'fudge' during the scenes, so because it is bleeped out no one can tell what word she really said. I felt the story was unnecessary. But I guess they thought it would get some laughs.

Their ratings are actually very good, but that doesn't mean they don't try to get them higher. They've won several awards including an Emmy and Golden Globe. Someone said the story stemmed from a writer's experience with their own child. If so, I think they should have kept that to themselves.

so true. i think they were trying to get attention to their sitcom. i dont think a lot of people watch that and they needed publicity. i know i watched it a couple times when it first came on and didnt find anything so great about it.

I sure don't think that we need anymore profanity on TV. The article said that they would be bleeping it out and the toddler wouldn't actually be saying the word..so that is a plus, but it opens up the path for other shows to play with this kind of stuff and that is not good.

Hello... The only constant thing in the world is 'Change'... Things keep changing... They will never be the same. There were times, they tell us, when the children would fear to speak in front of the adults... Using F words was beyond imagination... Things are changing, will change... It has come very late on TV, I have seen kids abusing in schools too... :(

Are you kidding me...the "F" word has been used freely on ONE show for at least FOUR years! Babysitting my tenants lovely little 6 year old girl (this was 4 years ago) after a invigorating winter afternoon outside....Ella (the little girl) wanted to watch TV, whilst I cooked supper! Sunday late afternoon...usually there is NOTHING on here (this is when we had analog TV and an antenna)! Ella said..."I always watch FAMILY GUY!" I had NEVER seen the program...WAS I EVER appalled! Nearly broke all my dishes in the kitchen...every (it seemed) sentence contained THAT word! Appalled and sick to my stomach..I asked her if her Mother let her watch this..and she said; "Oh, yes..Mumma always watches it with me!" I was ashamed of my reaction...embarassed to tell her Mother..but the Mother didn't react the way I did...she said it was fine! Children are watching this show..NOW 4 years on the air...with the "F" word VERY prominent...Yikes!

Well, this intrigued me and I had to spend some time looking but apparently the word is treated with horror and they teach the child that it's not appropriate. That's okay with me. I would, however, rather see lessons taught by example than by situation. Remember the old idyllic TV shows like Father Knows Best, Andy Griffith, etc.? They mostly taught by example, how the characters acted and reacted to different situations. But I DO recall a few shows when I was a child where a the kid said a bad word--it would have been "damn" or "darn", of course!--and the parents had to deal with it. Because all parents go through that, or most of them. I think it's the word that has everyone up in arms but I rather agree with one critic that said the student's no-cussing club could spend their energy better reading to the elderly or helping others. Setting an example is more effective than lecturing or protesting.

oh yes. i fondly remember the days when things were eluded to over a kids head. you know. and i really didnt like it when they took the Smothers brothers off the air because Tommy kept saying things not allowed. i really could never figure out what those things were

Try this!!! When mt son was 15yrs i was dating this guy who had a 3yr old. I found recorded on tape my son telling the girl to say the f___ing B____ words. I was shocked. He recored the whole thing and laughed evertime she said it. I played it back to my then bf and all he said was she probably hears worse at home with her mom.

yes and obviously it came from friends or hearing it on the street somewhere, like how C sometimes spouts out things like that. at least ive heard since the airing of the show, none of that word was actually heard. so maybe it was for a cause of learning you shouldnt say some things.

I think the word is so over used that it's become what ain't was in our day. I don't care to hearing it used so much, but you can hardly go anywhere without doing so, at least once. It's lost it's shock value. The scary thing is wondering what the next generation will come up with to shock their elders.

so true. with me it was smoking. my elders thought it made you look like a cheap tramp but my friends just thought it made you look grown up and cool. its not so cool now, huh? me with copd and cancer and goping through quiting pains now. my skin and hair look like several road maps on top of each other anyway, thats how im looking at all this. just another rebellion. i guess.

That is one word that is nasty and doesn't need to be repeated. The kids learn that work as well as other cuss words soon enough. It is ridiculous what they put on tv. All the murders, crime scenes, rapes, all the autopsies, etc. Enough is enough. I would rather watch shows that I grew up watching then some of the stuff now a days.

I know. and i realise theres something called child protection you put on your tv, etc. but like me, most people probably dont know how that works. i always just kept track of what my kids watched. but i was usually home with them when they were growing up. excpt for the last one and i was with him in the evening.

While I do realize that there are a lot of children that do use curse words today, I don't think that it is appropriate to show something like this on the television because if there are children that see it that don't already use curse words, they are more likely to use them in the future. You are right that there has been a lot of progress in the right direction, but making progress in the right direction does always seem to be hindered by the fact that there are things that happen that do result in a step backward.
