I am working in a call center here in the Philippines that serves Australian clients and usually from my previous jobs that cater to Australian clients, we don't have work during their public holiday. Tomorrow is their Australian day but our boss decides that we'll go on training instead of having a day off. It was awful because I wanted to rest so badly, plus it was our payday so it would be great if we don't have work. But anyway, at least we'll get paid.
If you are from Australia, do you usually work on this day? I know it's kinda obvious but there are industries that work even on a holiday right?

Work on Australia Day? Never! I don't work hard any day - I just go to work to play around and annoy everyone else by minding my own business!
This year most workplaces had both Thursday & Friday off for a long weekend. Maybe only the corner stores & a few very small independent supermarkets stayed open... as well as the big hardware stores (home renovation is currently a big trend here whenever we get time off work).
Hope your training paid off!

Australia Day is said to be the most important Public Holiday here in Australia. So businesses will be closed and employees will have their day off. I understand that since it falls on a Thursday, many people will take the opportunity to have an extended break by closing/taking Friday as leave and most of Australia will be at a stand-still.
