Why Antioxidants?

Have you ever wondered why lots of advertisers nowadays promotes antioxidants in their products? They say coffee is a good source of antioxidants, so with green teas, ginger drinks, and even some garlic flavored snacks just because it has garlic in them. Okay, we know that these antioxidants are for our health benefit but they don't really tell us how, rather they just promote their products since that's the real point of their advertisement.
The truth is, antioxidants were there to fight these what so called FREE RADICALS that are naturally produced in our bodies as we digest our foods so they are unavoidable. The good news is, our body cells have regeneration that helps our body recover from these free radicals. The bad news is, these free radicals have increased dramatically due to today's lifestyles like being exposed to Stress, Radiation, Pollution, Toxins and with our poor eating habits. With increased free radicals, our cells can't cope up anymore with its natural regeneration and in the long run they get oxidative damage which results now to degeneration that will develop degenerative diseases which are not showing symptoms instantly but rather we'll just feel them when we're old and the damages are already severe. The common degenerative diseases were stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. This is when antioxidants are needed in our bodies to prevent oxidative damage.
Good thing that I have attended a free training that allowed me learn about these. Now me and my family are enjoying life with less free radicals and I'm so happy to hear from them that they were so happy to feel the difference as I do. -)

Hi aeisle
Quite right. These radicals are good and anti-oxidants even great. I have read about these and find that many a times these are about balancing the right proportions in the body.
As you mention - you have attended some free training on these, i hope you would not mind helping me here - I am suffering from Ulcerative Colitis and stay in a city (not a big one) in India. I try finding some affordable anti-oxidants on the Internet and find that Omega 3 is quite beneficial. But unfortunately, I do not know if this information is right or wrong. Also, what are the different products that are to be taken for such ailments. Would be really great if you can help me.

It's because anti-oxidants is good for our body. As days passes by our body is immune to disease. An anti-oxidant is good for health plus it has too many benefits for us. As for me, the benefit that I wanted is to have a great skin plus good health.

Great skin starts from within.
If we are healthy internally it will most likely reflect into our skin. I bet your source of antioxidants are primarily from grape seed extract. Because I've learned that the substance extracted from grape seeds namely bioflavanoids when combined with Vit C and E, it will really help us achieve a young looking and radiant skin.
But that's depends if your body is actually receiving the right amount of it. That's when we need to consider the potency of antioxidants that we take. Because most products available in the market only lets us absorb 50% or less from whats written in the label.
Good thing a study was done to show the absorption rate of different brands, and to my surprise, most famous brands were below 50%. This is when I decided to take those with as much as 97% absorption rate. Well, I don't want to pay 100% for the vit of my family and just absorb 50% or less of what I paid.

I am a big fan of antioxidants. I drink green tea with lemon peel and ginseng in the mornings and I make sure I add an herbs and spices to my foods because they also contain them.
My main reason for eating and drinking foods high in antioxidants is the fact that I am aware of numerous environmental factors that weaken us and our immune systems. I prefer to do things that counteract the negative things done to my body and also as preventative care for things I may otherwise encounter as I get older.

You are right on how much antioxidants can help us to become healthier. Another thing is that antioxidants do is that they make us look younger by preventing these free radicals or superoxides in the aging process. I think this is one of the main selling point of antioxidants in which fads on looking healthy is as important as feeling healthy. This is why antioxidants really sell to both young and old with its many healthy effects for the body.

Yes, I have also read something about how antioxidants keeps us young. Its a bit complex though.
But from what I understand, as long as we prevent our cells from damage, it can help delay the signs of aging. And as we discussed, these free radicals are one of the major causes of cell damage. So as long we prevent it from damaging our cells through antioxidants, it helps us look young. -)

There are different kind of antioxidants in the nature. But there is some measuring scale also. Its called ORAC(a mesuring unit)I use to sale the antioxidant juice of acaibery which is suppose to have a highest ORAC value among all the fruit available on this earth. So this is one of the richest antioxidant fruit juice available now a days. Even I have seen many problems related to health condition are solved by this fruit juice.

I agree with you about the importance of antioxidants. I want to add that we should search for food wich contains antioxidants naturally. Like fruit and vegetables because they are much more healty than pills, ready-to-use drinks, e.t.c. There are antioxidants in walnuts, honey, fish, milk, grapes, olive oil and in all red, yellow and, orange fruits and vegetables.
