When sleeping on your side

I sleep on my side sometimes. Sometimes I am more comfortable with that position. And I am glad I met one of my friends who shared to me something her therapist told her. By the way, my friend undergoes therapy because of her knees and pelvis aching. According to her, they found out that her sleeping position (which is sleeping on her side most of the time) is a contributory factor. Her therapist suggested that she place a small pillow between her legs. The pillow will cushion the knees and level the pelvis. It will also fix spinal alignment and even alleviate lower back pain. I asked my friend if it is effective, she said yes. So perhaps I must try this as well.

Hi! Wow .Thanks for this new info.I also sleep on my side. When its cold I sleep in fetal position. Sleep position is important , I remember one time My pillow was to high and when I woke up and change position Something snap and suddenly I have stiff neck. Psychologist also say that every sleep position has an implication on the person's character.I don't know exactly what it was. :))

I remember watching on TV that it is not advisable to have high/thick pillows. It causes strain on our neck.

Oh dear! I'm still young so I haven't experienced any back pain yet but I do sleep on my side a lot. For some reason I find it quite uncomfortable to sleep on my back on stomach so I prefer to sleep on my side and occasionally I'll swap from my left to my right. But I'll consider this when I'm a bit older or experience a bit of back pain in the future. Thanks for sharing to all those who sleep on their sides. This is really going to help!

When it is cold, I like to sleep on my stomach. It helps keep me warm.

Have you ever tried sleeping with your bit on the side?
That can be really uncomfortable. Especially if you have to explain where you have been all night.

Hi!
I sleep on my side a lot of times but I have not experience knee pain and pelvic pain so I guess I'm still sleeping safely. And when i sleep on my side I'm usually hugging a pillow with my arms and legs. The only thing I always remember about sleeping on my side is that I try to sleep on my right side. My mother said it's not good to sleep on my left because the heart gets squeezed. I don't know if it has a scientific basis but I guess it wouldn't hurt if I follow it most of the time. But then again, when you're asleep you can't control your positions.

I've read that one good position to sleep in is the fetal position. I forgot why but it's somewhat similar to sleeping on your side. I also sleep on my side since it kind of helps me breathe better than lying on my back although I always find myself in that position each time I wake up. But I should take that advice regarding a pillow between the knees :)

Hiya dolce,
What a good idea I will try that one out for myself as well. I sleep on my left side most of the time. Not because I want as I really sleep better on the right for a while and then turn over to the left afterwards that way I get to sleep better and quicker.
The Pillow is a good idea thoug see if I can take to it and it works for me.
How´s it gone for everyone else?xxx

I read some responds in this discussion and none of them talks about having a pillow under your head to keep the back straight. It is very important to keep your head on a pillow when sleeping on the side and you better switch a position once in a while because of the pressure on the blood vessels , you know like , if you put a pressure on a part of your boddy and never stop it , it will get rotten because of the disturbance to the blood flow.
I usually sleep on my belly but it arches my spine , making it like an arc (because of my bed is soft at its middle area).
your possition of sleeping on the side with a pillow between the legs is good and reduces the pressure on the knees. But , make sure your spine is straight also.

I have heard about placing a pillow between the knees when sleeping on one's side from several different sources. I prefer to sleep on my back with a wedge shaped pillow under my knees.

Hi dolce! How are you? I have a pain in my pelvic area on the right
side that is excruciating and a pain in the joint between my right
thigh and pelvis. I went to a Neurologist and then to a Pain Management
Specialist. I was told that I have Bursitis in the joint and Fibromyalgia
in the pelvis and the rest of the pressure points on my body. I try to
sleep on my side, but the pain gets worse. I can't seem to find a comfortable
position. The doctor told me to put a pillow under my legs and I thought it
made the pain worse so I stopped using it. I have knee pain issues and they
all seem to be on the right side! I tried sleeping on the left side, but
I still can't stretch out my leg without pain. I am supposed to start Physical
Therapy also. The Pain Management Doctor gave me Lidicane Patches which you
put directly on the area with the most pain. They are avout 4"x 6" squares
that can be cut and placed accordingly. They do help a bit. I can use them
12 hours on and 12 hours off. I am hoping the Physical Therapy helps because
he gave me some Pain Meds temporarily which I try not to use. Since Fibromyalgia
is affecting my back too it makes it difficult sometimes to find any comfortable
position. I still think that if a pillow helps, use it!

I sleep on my side a lot. I usually have a hand separating my legs. It keeps my hand warm and makes me more comfortable. I have noticed that this hand falls asleep and then I switch to the other side and other hand. I have heard of using a pillow before, but have never tried it. I do have back pain, but it is from arthritis.

there is a special side sleepers pillow available here in Germany, I have one of them and really should use it more as I have lower back problems.

I also sleep on my side, too bad i also got some body ache. So time by time, i changed my position, I heard that, we should change our body position, every 2 hours, to avoid some strains and pain or much worst some bed sores. And yes i think putting pillows in between knees will also help reduce back pain.
