Do you check the change that stores give you?

Just wondering... I've noticed that the majority of the customers I deal with rarely do. I try to count things out for them, especially if they have a lot of change coming back, but most people don't even seem to care either way.
Just the other day I was at Target and I did the math and the girl didn't give me my money-change back (it was $1.27 or something that I was supposed to get back, and I got back .27 cents only). I was out in the car by the time that I realized this happened, so I didn't make a big fuss over it and go back in. Would you have, over $1?

yes, i would definitely go back. $1 is more than 40 pesos in my country's currency. it can buy a bag of cupcakes for my little girl. there is no harm in going back and ask the cashier. they make mistakes sometimes and would be glad if you go back because it will be a question to them when they turnover the register to the next cashier. they are instructed to get no more and no less from the customers and they cannot put anything in their pocket. if their immediate supervisor is strict, they'll be questioned if they have more or less collection than what is recorded. this may not be the same for all establishments we buy from but for the good of both me and the cashier, i usually count my change right in front of her.

You are right , the register must be correct or else , taxes will be calculated wrong and it is not so good. The sells man can lose money , pay a fee...
I always count my change. I pay with amounts of 100 , 200 , 50 so the change is not small , mistakes can be big in this case.

Once you leave the register area there is no way to prove that you got the wrong change until the whole register is counted and tallied up.
I always count my change whether it is at a store or a restaurant. Seems simple math went out the window when registers tell you how much should be returned. Sometimes it is accidental at big stores for someone read the screen wrong.
Other times it can be an issue. We went into a dinner and the bill came to something like $17 but when we got to the register they asked for $26. The register was broken and they couldn't add up two dinners and two drinks. It took forever to get out of there with the right change. They even got a calculator out and didn't get it right. We took a blank piece of paper out and did the addition very clearly of what the bill added up to and how the change of $30 would make the proper change. Then they got it. And sometimes it is done because they are at minimum wage and try bulking up the bill for a bigger tip and hope people don't notice. Many don't. They just grab the change and put it in their pockets or purse without looking and leave.
Good practice to check before you leave the register area! It is your hard earned money and every penny counts, dollars too!

PS: I also give back the money if they happen to count it out wrong and they give me back too much. They are responsible for losses and I wouldn't want to put anyone in that situation knowingly.
Honesty is the best policy!

I usually don't check it. I keep telling myself I should start, but it seems I am always in a hurry. I might notice at the register if there were a large mistake. If I didn't notice until I got to the car, I would just let it go. I am disabled, and going back in the store would probably be more trouble than it was worth.

I always count my change and they are never wrong.
One thing that makes me wonder is what do the shop do with all the extra cent when someone pays like round amount of 100$ instead of the real price that is many times 99.99$....The shop probabely can earn a lot of cents that way. Many customers pay extra cent everyday and it comes out to maybe tens of dollars if not more. Isn't it ?
But the shop also round down if it's 100.01$ , I can pay 100$...many times the prices are not that way and it's only after buying more than one thing.

No, I never check the change the stores give me. Lol. I'm not really good in Math, so I never make it a big deal. Well, actually I always try to buy things from my note, and while picking those things out of the rack I count it on my phone's calculator. :D I always make the maximum number of the goods so I know how much I'd spend. That's why I never count the change. Even if I got less than I should, I never make it a big deal. People make mistakes, and that's human. Besides, I never like to protest about anything in public. Lol.

Sometimes I do, but very rarely. I could barely count the times that I ever stop to check my change. Usually in stores, it's the cashier who counts it out for me so it's really pretty convenient.

a pleasant day maezee,
based on your main topic, i am one of the guys who really count the change whenever i bought something. that i am very particular in terms of money. hence, this attitude was also being done to me by others so i am just doing to others too. and i find it normal since money is involved, so we better practice being particular at this point.

Seldom... But I tried to remind myself to. Maybe it's because we have grew dependent on automated system and the change given to us is correct.
But it's not really the case. Especially when there is an error in the database amount and even though the change is correct, but we are over-charge and short-changed.
There was once when the cashier didn't return me my 5cts change and I asked him twice before he finally realized it. Although it's a small amount but it's my hobby to collect 5 cts and thus, I wasn't short changed.

I am checking my change before leaving the store, because most of the time the counter does not have enough coins to give correct changes, or better I often provide the coins, and give the exact bill so there would be no issue whether I got the right amount of change.

I don't really bother to take the time to do so because I rarely pay with cash. When I do pay with cash I don't have time to try and count it. Its usually busy and I'd be holding up the line. While I hate the idea of trusting people to do right by me, I find I just do it against my better judgment a lot of the time. Quite often it's not that big of a deal really. I pay with plastic, so there is no second-guessing what's going on.

I do because I'd been short-changed a number of times. I even check the items because some sales clerks make mistakes. They put something there which you did not order or they miscalculate. I had caught sales clerks in these situations, padding or miscalculating. It is always good to check the receipt and your change.

hey there maezee,
Well for me however small it is money is money, and i am also a very thrifty person and i hate getting cheated, so this one time i had an argument with a taxi driver cause he didnt gave me the right change so ending is he gave me back my money and he lost lots of customers because we argued for about ten minutes.

Yes, sometimes. But when there is a lot on my mind, I forget. And when the cashier makes mistakes, like handing me a bigger change that was needed, I inform them honestly. tsk, i wanted to run away with the money but something just keeps me from doing that.
