I agree that old movies are the most memorable. Unless you count horror films, cause they're so gory and graphic now that it's hard to get them out of your head! I still remember "The Wizard of Oz" and "Forrest Gump" and "Alice in Wonderland" just as much, if not more, as I remember any new movies I've seen. The classics always stick in your head since the plots are so unique since they were the firsts, and since we grew up watching them.

I agree that a lot of the old movies are really great. I still like movies that are carried by the story and the great acting. I still like the old movies and actors that I grew up with. They're hard to beat.
On the other hand, I think there are a lot of good movies made today. There are a lot of them that are just action and special effects extravaganzas but there are a lot of good stories told today too.
I watch a lot of movies and there are some made today that I have thoroughly enjoyed and been entertained by just as much as the old movies. Some of the ones that come to mind are "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Green Mile", "Good Will Hunting", "Apollo 13", "Mr. Holland's Opus", "Field of Dreams", "Saving Private Ryan" and many others.
Movies made today are different, but a great story combined with great acting will never to out of style.

I am an oldie, and honestly there are ample plus points in old movies. :) But there are good new movies too! I am open to any good movie...:) There was one Dor I think. I was very touched with that movie. The girl's husband was killed by the other girl's husband, and this other girl travels all the way to desert to seek forgiveness for her husband, and the widow forgives and in someway, both get together..made me wonder if it is possible, but was portrayed so realistically, and even the song in that movie was superb.

yeah. That's true. Most of old movies are very good. But, thanks for the old movie. Because of that, the film in contemporary times can be like this. VIVa movie!

See, I feel it is vice versa, in the sense sometimes the old movies too did not have any message but those were full of drama like "Padasan," "Bombay to Goa," Hati Mere Saathi," "Gumnaam," and so on.
The basic change, as I find is, the story part is missing in the modern movies. The directors fail to build up the story. So, it often happens to me after coming out of the theatre, I forget what I saw. But still I remember the stories of "Mera naam joker," "Ram teri ganga maili ho gai," "Sagar" and so on.

It seems to me that the remakes of old movies don't capture me the way the original did. The new movies concentrate on being as graphic as they can. They don't let you see it the way you want but only the way the director wants you to see it. Gone are the days of you filling in parts of the movie. Everything is laid out for you in very graphic detail. Give me the old movie where I can see it in my mind.

Yes, I also like old movies best! There seemed to be more emphasis on the stories then and they did not place so much emphasis on violence or car accidents then too! What I also miss are pictures that make one laugh and had sense of humour!

Dear Sunil! With the changing times every thing is changing! Change is a part of life and indication of progress! Movies are also no exception to this! Yes the old movies used to have a good story line, sweet music and message too! But then these movies had their own set backs as most of them were made in studios, they used to use sets to create the illusion and the technology was not too developed then to incorporate trick photography! The trick photography used then looks like comedy today!
Today we have advanced techniques of photography, graphics and many computer animations incorporated in the movies! Today the movies are made to be exhibited internationally ,so the taste of the whole World is to be taken into consideration and accordingly the movies are made today with loud music, popular stars and with lot of tricks incorporated in the movie!
Both have their own advantages and disadvantages! Sine during the old times there was no other source of entertainment the movies made then were popular and gained a good popularity in the masses! Today with so many channels available on TV, so many international movies coming to the multiplexes and having the internet at our disposal it becomes easy to compare any thing very easily! Today the comparison is done internationally in any field and this was not there in the past!
In olden days he movies used to move around the actual people and were based on some popular classical novels of the times thus making them very popular! But today the subjects used in the movie are very different and sometimes very violent too which may not be liked by one and all! The science fictions and movies pertaining to space science are gaining importance today which may not be liked by the people from old school of thoughts!
Thus in my opinion the movies are progressing at the normal speed but it is becoming difficult for us to accept the change with the same speed as the movies which are evolving! Thanks for the discussion! I liked participating in it!

The studios stopped making message films regularly in the 70's. And musicals in the 60's. But the classics are all on DVD. And if you have cable, check and see if you have Turner Classic Movies. This station plays All the old time movies. Each 4th of July they play Wizard Of Oz . It is sad that there are no new great films but the classics are still around!

As for me, I love the old ones and the new ones too. As our technology evolve, movie productions can be enhanced to be more entertaining and real. If your talking about good messages well, i think there are still movies like that today.

I don't think either are better than the other. Are you saying that there are no messages in today's movies? I think some have made quite a mark on people. Inception was great. It really made you think when you saw the ending. The whole movie itself was really entertaining and the story was quite original as well. No lame cliche there.
I enjoy older movies too. Terminator, Predator, Alien series were awesome. Think about it: in 30 years the hit movies of today will be ancient and people will be saying that THEY were the best ones of the ages. There is no specific period where films are the absolute best.

I agree, most of the old movies, international are far better than this one.
I am speaking in terms of story and plot.
Same here in my country (local area) old movies has better sense compared to new movies.
Although there are few good ones- still old movies are great movies with sense.

Yeah old movies were made in good plots. The story lines are unique. Every film used to deliver something different. But now a days films are mostly 'inspired' from some other movies. Though good movies with unique plot are also being made but they are not large in number.

Yes you are right.Old movies have some stories, some messages which they use to convey with making the interest of the viewers. But today pictures having no stories just watch them and forget them as no message to convey.
