How you can reuse berry baskets in your home

During the course of the year berry lovers purchase fresh fruits of all shapes, sizes and types. Some are strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries. These fruits are enjoyed eaten as is and others are incorporated into various recipes. We have even sliced them into salads, placed the on plates with sandwiches, tossed them whole into bowls of cereals and made many delicious smoothies.
1) Preparing the basket for reuse! - Most berries are packaged in small plastic baskets. These baskets are usually thrown away. They actually can be re-purposed, reused and put to additional daily uses if they can't be recycled. They first step after removing the berries is to wash these various size baskets with hot soapy water. Allow them to dry completely before they take on their next task.
2) Is your sock drawer a mess? - Place the plastic baskets in your sock drawer. Roll the socks like you normally do and place them into the baskets. Separate the socks by colors and the next time you want a particular color it will stand out. Not only that, that sock drawer that is always a mess will be neat as a pin. (Also, great to separate out pantyhose or knee high stockings too.)
3) Is your desk cluttered? - Place a plastic berry basket on your desk at home or work. Stack all those post it note pads in them for easy access. Put one in a drawer to separate out rubber bands, binder clips, pens and pencils. They will be easily found and rummaging through an entire drawer to find that one needed item will be quick and easy.
4) Does your sink stink? - That smell might be coming from your sponge. If it isn't squeezed out completely and left where it can dry properly it may cause a smell around the sink area. Place a berry basket near the sink and keep your sponge inside. Or better yet, turn the basket over and place the sponge on top. The basket won't rust and the sponge will get air from all sides, helping to eliminate that smell that sometimes occurs.
5) Do daughters have messy dresser tops? - If you have a daughter you will know tight off that the tops of their dressers are covered with an assortment of what parents call a mess. Give them a few berry baskets. Let them decorate them or use them as is. One can hold her hair clips, scrunchies, ribbons and bows. Another may be needed for lipstick, lip gloss or lip balms. Give them something to work with and less will be on the dresser just ready to fall to the floor. And, the wood dresser top might actually get dusted once again.
Happy organizing and re-purposing!

I use the baskets in my craft work. I use it for my thread when I make teddy bears. I can fit 9 spools of thread in the basket and then have the ends of the thread through the holes in the basket.
For making jewelry I have the spools of wire in the baskets and again thread the ends through the holes in the basket. I also use it for a tool holder.
The baskets also come in handy for washing small parts. It's like having a colander. I also use it as a soaking basket for hand washables that I want to keep separated. The baskets also work great for arranging flowers in a large bowl.
Do you need to shell peanuts, walnuts, or other nuts? After shelling the nuts you can use the baskets to shake small pieces of nuts out for baking. Also you can eliminate small shell bits too. I have used the baskets for starting veggies for spring planting, as with the holes in the baskets the roots can make their way out of the baskets and when the season is over you can pull the baskets up without too much hassle.
I also will use it if I am wanting to separate little rocks from sand that I pick up from beside the lake. They are also great for taking to the beach and putting shells in so that you can wash the excess sand off of the shells.
Then, of course, is the old old fashioned way of weaving ribbon through the openings on the baskets and making them into Easter baskets for the kids. You could also do it for Easter baskets that you want to make and give to under privileged children. During Christmas you can again weave ribbon through the holes and when you're done decorating them you could put sample sizes of soaps, shampoos, deodorants, colognes and more for gift giving at nursing homes.
I also have used them for when I do multi colored knitting. I string the yarns through the holes and it keeps them separated.
I can keep spouting ideas, but I'm going to leave space for others to get their two cents worth in.

I love it! Thank you so much for all your ideas and tips. I can't tell which one I like better they are all so good. I can see myself now using them for thread and yarn too.
I especially like the idea of decorating them for those that are unfortunate or in nursing homes. I will be saving more of these and volunteering my craft time to put smiles on more faces this year.
If you ever want to spout away feel free to do so. Your suggestions and explanations are wonderful.
Thanks for all your recycling tips!

Good tips for people that have baskets. I'm not one of them, as I grow my own berries in my back yard. This saves me a lot of money.

This is wonderful! We tried that the last two years but the soil and temperatures here just weren't compatible with growing a garden. It is either scorching hot or pouring pain, not much middle ground. Bet you make lots of delicious dishes and desserts with your berries too. Hope you do some canning, that will allow you to take those berries into the winter months to enjoy!
Thanks for stopping by and adding a savings tip by growing your own berries!

These are definately some Great tips. The only thing I would think is a lot of the baskets are too small for some of these things you have mentioned, but for others they would work for sure. I know that since you are already buying the Berries this would be cheaper than some of the other organizers out there for sure.

These are great for smaller items or when you can get the larger plastic baskets of fruits at stands or farmers markets. Once in a while they might have larger ones in the stores.
It is a good idea to purchase some larger ones that will last long for bigger items to organize other food items, make up or whatever you need to get a handle on.
Happy organizing and thanks for sharing your tip and enjoying everyone's here!

i would give anything to have to old fashioned wood strawberry baskets because i love old stuff but your idea is a great one. think about using them in the craft room too! one or two containers could be used for paints, another for pens, etc.
i am a crafter but not a very organized one!

Those are some great ideas. I will have to try a few of them the next time I have berry baskets like that. When we go pick fresh strawberries or blueberries at the local pick your own farms I always use those baskets to put other fruit that I buy in later. I also use them for other purposes in the pantry, the packages of ramen noodles fit perfectly in the strawberry baskets. Thanks for the new ideas.

That is wonderful to get fresh fruits at the farm. A lot tastier and fresher too.
Using these baskets in the pantry is another smashing idea for everyone to hear about. All the little packets and packages that don't stand on their own will now be organized and not slide all over the shelves.
Thanks for the ideas and re-purposing items too!

Wow, great and wonderful tips and useful info. I have not gotten many berry baskets for these uses yet but if I ever do I will try and use them, as I do love recycling and re-using whatever I can these days. I reuse envelopes, paper cups, plastic forks, you name it. It helps in many different ways! The environment likes it too. :-) Thanks for sharing!

That is so great that you are so concerned about the environment too. Recycling and reusing items for other purposes puts them to good use and saves you money in the long run.
Thanks for sharing other items that can be reused before discarding them!
