Romance on the Cheap

My partner and I don't go in for celebrating Valentine's Day. In fact, unless I tattooed the date on his forehead I think he would never remember it. But this year we've been apart a lot and I'd like to do something to celebrate the day, just to surprise him. We can't really go out in the evening because of the children, and I haven't got money to be splashing out on special gifts. So I'm a bit stumped as to what I should do. Any ideas? What can I do to surprise him that will make it a special event without costing the earth? I'm not very creative craftwise. What are you planning for Valentine's Day?

marbled chocolate - white and milk chocolate and peanut butter marbled
why dont you make like a special "treat" my friend made his girlfriend hand made chocolates. and my partner and i made them together the other night as well, not for valentines, actually just out of boredum lol! you take 150g or 300g of white chocolate 150g or 300g of milk chocolate and a jar of peanut butter. melt the white chocolate. melt the milk chocolate. then add 3-5 soup spoonfuls of peanut butter to the WHITE mix [the milk overpowers it] ]3 soup spoonfuls for 150g and 5 for the 300] you mix the peanut butter in until the mixture is smooth. then you grease a baking tray. drop a dollop of the white mix, dollop of the brown, so on and so forth until you have a patch work effect. then you take a cocktail stick and swirl it gently to create a marbled effect. then you fridge it for 3 hours, take it out, and cut into chunks. handmade chocolates :) and cheap too :) you could even buy a little box, or make a little bag for them :) here's a picture of what my marbled mixture looked like!

Oh wow! That's so cool. I think I'll save the idea though as that's something the kids would enjoy doing with me, so we could do it for his birthday.

Valentine's Cookies - These were the cookies I made that year.. happened to upload them to FB.. I only took the pic of the best looking ones..
I'm not planning anything for this Valentine's day. Some years we do, some years we don't.. this year we're not. As for ideas for you.. a couple years ago I did this when we were broke and it was highly appreciated: First I made him some homemade sugar cookies from scratch (that alone is a big deal for me.. and they tasted great). I cut them into large heart shapes, and got all sort of decorations and different colored frostings and I wrote little messages on each one, like our initials, or I love you. Then, I got a few candles, downloaded some romantic and sexy music, bought myself some sexy lingerie, and before he came home I waited for him while wearing the lingerie with my robe over the top. I turned off the lights, lit the candles, played the music, and when he got home I took off the robe. That was enough for him and I'm pretty sure it would be enough for any guy.

Knowing that you have children at home, that must have been a major night in :) I like personalising the cookies. I'm not a great cook when it comes to sweet stuff, so making the effort might be appreciated.

If you can , have the kids go to grandma's . Then make his favorite dish for dinner and have it together. Then for dessert have something you can have that requires you to pick up with your fingers, like mini chocolates. Make it a indoor picnic or a date night at home. Whatever you do , do it together and the rule is no work talk Or talking about the kids.My guy and I both don't celebrate Valentine's Day. I usually watch St Valentine's Day Massacre , either the movie or the documentary.

Afternoon delight! That is more romantic. So have a indoor picnic. Spread a blanket, eat no, Feed each other on the floor and let the mood take you!

We've never really celebrated it before, which is why I'm a little out of practice! Getting a babysitter is a major challenge, but it dawned on me earlier that if we had a lunchtime treat meal we would still have a couple of hours before school ends ....

I think you can prepare a Candlelight Dinner in home by yourself. So it will not cost a lot of money, and you can take care of your children at the same time. I think the romance is the way you show your partner how you love him and the way he shoe you back. Enjoy the Valentine's Day is the most important.

'Romance is the way you show your partner how you love him'. That's the most meaningful thing. Thanks.

All I can think of is for you to bake a massive heart-shaped cake and cover it in red icing!

I also have a pan y0u can make a big gigantic heart shaped cookie....but if you do a cut out you don't even need a pan....just roll out your dough and cut it in the shape of a heart.

Red icing sounds terrifying (reminds me of a cake the kids helped me ice a few years ago that melted on the way to it's destination and looked more like a car accident than a cake!), but i so rarely cook anything sweet that the gesture would probably be appreciated.

I've never actually used it myself but it must exist as a colouring of ordinary icing I would think. I wonder if it tastes of strawberry?

I like the expression you use:" unless I tattooed the date on his forehead" This sounds very very funny. Anyway, for your question, you can prepare a surpise romantic dinner with candles etc.. You can prepare this at your house or at a friend's house , if he/she is away,so as to be more private without the kids.

I guess I would also have to get him to look in a mirror if the tattoo was to be effective!

Ha Ha that is really funny.I can imagine the tattoo on his forehead and you forced him to look in the mirror! I burst into laughs just by imagine it! You definetely have strong sense of humour! You should tell him your thought about the tattoo, i think he will find it amusing if he likes humour as i do, and maybe he will remember this day from now on.

I am not sure what we will do, if anything, but I do have the night off. Yay!! When my kids were little I would feed them and get them to bed early. Then we would eat by candle light, some kind of favorite meal. Usually a steak and salad and baked potato. We might watch a favorite movie, but as I understand it, electricity is an issue where you are living. The other thing hubby liked was to play chess. Really, just doing anything out of the ordinary is such a nice treat. Foot massages are nice as well.

Actually, my watching a movie with him would be such an event that it would count as special! If we charge up the laptops in advance we can watch a movie, providing it's not too long. Some nice drinks and snacks, and me staying awake all the way through .... :)

Make him a list of the reasons why yuou love him. Prepare his favourite meal for him. Put on your favourite music and dance in the living room. Get him in the mood, and make love. There are four ideas right there that won't cost a thing!! OK food costs money, but no more money than it would cost to eat on a regular basis. LOL

You know, I'm reading this discussion I wrote 24 hours down the road, and now wondering why i don't do these things all the time? Who needs an excuse to eat, dance or make love?

I have stamping club on Valentines day so I'll be spending it with my friends.....I also am bringing the treats so I have made treat bags for them to munch on during the meeting. How about a hand made card? You can make one on the computer....then a meal of some of his favorites....or even baking him his favorite dessert?

I'm afraid that my crafts aren't very good so a home made card probably wouldn't do the occasion justice. I've been trying to think of something other than food as i have to cook for our volunteers each day too, but I've just realised that I cook us a special treat at lunchtime instead of dinner then we'd have a couple of hours alone before school ends. Result!

How about something simple and maybe considered stupid. Order out for a pizza, get a movie and just have a romantic night in the living room. I remember years ago, I would always hang out and order pizza and watch movies. Wether it was with my friends or my girl friend, I always had a great time.

Over here We usually consider Valentine's Day to be "Import",so it has not all that caught on so far.Some young people tend to celebrate it in recent years .I am not clear what your mode of life is like,but I think it doesn't matter how little a gift costs,It is the thought that counts.
@GreenMoo (11833)
10 Feb 12
I think Valentine's Day is overrated, and nothing that your countrymen should be concerned about importing! You are absolutely right though, it is the thought that counts. now that I am reading back my discussion of yesterday and reading everyone's good ideas and I am wondering to myself why I do not do some of these things every day. Why wait for a special occasion?
@GreenMoo (11833)

Perhaps I should make a list of all these ideas and refer to it more regularly.

I agree with you.Now that you are an affectionate couple,why do you have to go with the tide and do something on that occasion?

I think the idea of Valentine Day is OK but it has been taken over by the likes of Tesco's, ramming gifts in your face as you walk into the supermarket. I prefer to be spontaneous and not dictated to. However, the last time I was spontaneous was 1985 so I am well overdue.

Orsen - are you suggesting I should dress like a womble tomorrow night? I was thinking of something different, so I guess that qualifies. I refuse to dress like Jimmy Saville. Ollie - boxing day? You're kidding? do you reckon there is anything you can't buy in Tescos these days? The one near my Mum's is so large I could get lost in there.

Is there anything that has NOT been taken over by the likes of Tescos?

Well I am planning on making a heart shaped cake (I got the pan last year) and putting some yummy filling in the center and coolwhip on the outside but I'm not exactly in a relationship. it's for family. I bet a guy would love it too, just add some extra personal touches like what has already been mentioned, just use your imagination! It will be the best ever, you'll see. No need to spend lots of money. Who has that these days to throw around?
