I have a friend. We're not really that close friends. He's doing bad in school. He's trying pretty hard but he's not really succeeding. He knows that I'm doing very well in the same courses that he's taking. He's not the type to really look around for additional help through tutorials or anything. How do I help him without him feeling like I'm patronizing him?

You could "complain" about having to study, and then say, "Hey, what do you think about going for coffee (or whatever) and studying with me? We could hang out and get something done at the same time." Then, you'll have convo about certain questions or concepts that you guys are working on, without formally tutoring him. It gives him a chance to ask questions without feeling like he's imposing on you, and might even make him feel like he's helping you in the process.

You could try studying together...or studying by group. At least he won't be bored in studying and its not like giving him the idea that you know, "your doing bad in school and you need to study" kinda thing.
