Have you ever called in sick but you're really not?

I'm absent today at work and my excuse was I'm not feeling well. But I'm actually feeling fine.
I had an appointment today. I took an exam for the work I'm applying for. I'm finding new work because I want to resign from my current work. I did not want my superiors and other co-workers to know that I'm applying for a new work because I'm still not sure if I'm going to be accepted. I only want to announce it if I'm already sure that I got the work. I don't want any fuss or any unnecessary good lucks and do your best messages since there is no assurance yet that I'm getting the job.
So instead of telling the truth, I just said I'm sick when in fact, I'm not. ^^
Ever done the same thing?

Hi Secret!
Yes, I also do the same, I think I'm an expert on that before...haha and not only that sometimes I even asked my mom to call the office and tell them that I will not be reporting for the day coz I'm sick when in fact I'm not! I also do that on school. haha Coz I think that's the best excuse that e can give for being absent...

I did several times, I know it's not a good thing and I'm not making a good role model for my children, but I gotta do. This thing happened when one of my two daughters was ill. The eldest one sometimes get sick too often and I feel ashamed to make too many excuses not to work because she was sick, so I sometimes pretend that it was me who got sick and call my office .

Well, I guess that would be a valid reason. Although, I can't see the point why you have to be ashamed that your daughter gets sick all the time. It's a fact and your office can't do anything but be understanding.

Yes, I remember in particular this occasion when I was invited up to this party with my partner at the time, but I was due to work on this day, the party was too good to pass up, and normally I would only go sick if I was truly sick, I am not a sicky person so my sick record was virtually untarnished. Well I decided to phone in sick, but what I stupidly did was to phone whilst I was on the train, I got through to my supervisor and as I was telling her that I wouldn't be in the train announcement started up, well she couldn't fail to hear it, I was absolutely mortified! The only time I lie and that happens. Talk about embarrassing. Sadly I didn't enjoy the party at all, maybe that was my punishment. I never did it again, and luckily I got away with it, although I did get a few sly remarks from my supervisor when I returned to work!

That's why I was careful when talking to my boss and telling that I was sick. And that day that I was absent, I was careful not to be near the office.

I'm sure u will be accepted in your new job and that's where your 'Good luck', 'all the best' messages comes in. I might not be the first to wish u, but i know u will succeed in securing your new job, secret ^^

No, I did not. However, I knew a number of people who
did that. Especially if public holidays fall on Wednesday
and Thursday. Friday which is a work day and weekend off,
then these people either apply for leave for Friday, or just
call in for 'sick leave' on Friday.
One of the lady I knew advises her sister to make use all the
MCs (sick leave) which is allocated for eg. eight days per year.
She will said "Don't waste it, just call your office and said you
are sick!".

Yeah. A lot of people do that in our office, too. I think it's because it's just too much of a hassle to go to work for a day in between holidays.

Done that MANY times.
Everytime I have a hangover, with which my head is achy, I tell them I'm not feeling well and can't go to work. It's true, LOL, having a hangover is difficult. You will really feel lazy to go to work. Lots of my co-workers do the same thing and many of them are applying for other jobs too so they just say they're sick and can't come to work.

Oooh, I know what you mean about hangovers! They are really terrible. I've had too many hangovers in my life but there weren't enough to stop me from going to the office. I go to the office with a hangover and I just laze the day away battling the sick feeling.

I only did it once and that was back when I was still part of our operations (agent) just so I can go to an out of town pool party (Pansol) with some friends...I'm on the mid-shift that time so I thought my absences wouldn't really affect our staffing. There are some instances when I just have a mild fever when I would use my sick leave but that was a couple of years ago. Now I still have a total of 11 sick leaves (including some that was carried over from last year), since I really feel bad about being absent from work. We're understaffed right now and I know the feeling of being alone in the office when almost everybody calls in sick. I'm trying to use it up before this year ends though, I might call in sick again soon, sick of work that is ;-)

Good thing you weren't fired or demoted for it. You'd probably blame us if you were.

I have done the same thing. If your current job finds out that you are looking for a different or better paying job very often you find yourself terminated for some reason that will look bad on your future job applications. It's far better to call in sick and not let them get wind of what is going on. I hope you're feeling better soon!

I've never been better! That's what I'm also wary of. If the management knew I'm applying for a new job, they'll probably try everything so that they won't renew my contract.

I have not been put in the position to have to say I am sick when I'm not. We are allotted a certain amount of vacation days per year that we can take when we want. If something comes up tomorrow that I need to take off for..I can just call in and say I'm taking a vacation day. Now if I run out of them for the year, I do have to supply a reason...I try not to have to do that though.

I'm not a regular employee so I don't have that kind of privilege. If I absent, I'm absent and the day gets subtracted from my salary. I just didn't want to absent without telling anything to my boss so I told him the most reasonable thing I could think of.

I know I have done this once. I had a major test to study for and my husband's mom was not well and I ended up staying up late taking care of her. My test was later on that night and I needed to spend most of the day studying before my husband had to go to work and then after my test I came straight home to take care of my mother-in-law. I do not blame you for not wanting to tell your employer that you might be leaving until you know for sure you will be quittig.

yes, i done it not at work but in schools. let a classmate or a friends who write a letter and sign it like my mother. she write a letter of excuses and other reason such as sickness. then, i get a class excuse to be absent. such as yours also tell them i feel bad when in fact i am well. i just like to be absent, because i go to a party or travel with a sister even their is a test. i get to excuse myself and just avail of the exemption test to be reschedule later.

Hala lagot ka! LOL! That is not ideal but it is unavoidable at times because leaves must be filed in advance and sometimes there are events in our life that are unexpected. However, since you are applying for a job, you should have filed a leave if you still have leave credits. You don't want to jeopardize your final pay, do you?
Truth be told, I have done the same thing numerous times. Sometimes it is just inevitable.

Oh, I don't have any leave credits. Only regular employees have that kind of privileges.

Yes many times before. It is just hard to make excuses and the management would not actually let us take a leave if they learn about us applying to another company. So it is better to just call in sick. Nothing wrong in that. Good luck and hope you can get a good job soon.

No,I've never done it. But I've told my colleague to do it a couple of times and she has. Her daughter falls sick often or her husband brings up some sudden plan and since he doesn't like her working when he is at home...and he doesn't think her work is that important, she has to take off. She can't tell the real reason at school since she wouldn't be granted leave. So, she calls in sick. The problem is that she has taken so many such leaves that when she really falls sick, it makes her feel guilty about all the other times she has lied.

Yes, but mostly when I was in school.
I guess I was a mix of depressed and lazy at school, plus was billied a lot in school, so a lot of my school days I called sick, I was even on the verge of flunking several times due to lack of attendence, but to my luck I was a well behaved student, I kept good relations with most of my teachers and dispite lack of attendence or stying or doing my homwork I'd get relatively good marks.
To be honest looking back, I regret so much lack of attendence, so little effort, as knowing I got such good grades without attending or studying means that if I actually applied myself I'd maybe have gotten better qualifications, but that's gone now, well never to late, I might look into schooling for adults as I don't want to regret further along the line not trying now.
But in summary yes, I'd do it a lot!

You did the best thing in the situation at hand. If that situation with the manager and her supervisor aren't getting any better, you need to find better employment; plus with the world economy being the way it is, it would be foolish to jeopardize your current employment before you are at least in the door of something better. So don't feel bad that you took this day off for the interview...in fact hope for the best that you get word that the new job has decided to hire you! Good luck!

Thank you! It was only an exam. If I passed it, I'm guessing the next thing would be the interview and I'm sure to absent again from work for it.

No. I have rarely been sick, almost never actually. If anything, I have done the opposite; gone in when sick or almost sick. Since I am almost never sick, it would usually have been allergies. I can only think of one time when I might have been sick and I went in and a co-worker made me go home.

I'm using that excuse when i have the "Recto-copy" of the med cert but other than that; It's going to be my last resort if I can't make it other than rendering half-day at work.
This is due to either: 1) I have a cosplay or major event to manage (one of my three jobs that I have) or 2) I'm too lazy; to the point that I WILL take sixteen hours of sleep **or what I'm quoting as "Hibernation" and even me; when it strikes, i can't do anything about it**
Well; I know how you feel regarding the exam. Wouldn't hurt to take a risk and check other better opportunities ahead. Go ahead and have it your way ^_^-)
Happy mylotting about it further then~!!
