Lord Buddha was asked by his disciples, ‘What have you gained by Meditation?’ he replied, ‘I gained Nothing, but I have lost Anger, Depression, Insecurity, Fear of Old Age & Death.’
I fully agree with this, I don’t meditate in the true sense of the word, but I worship our Hindu Gods, Goddesses, recite some verses from our holy books; this I belter term as ‘prayer’.
Earlier I used to get angry very frequently, but now it is less.
Do you pray, meditate, has it any effect on you or your anger?
Please respond, share and comment.

Fortunately, I don't have the need to meditate.
I know how to remain calm, avoid anger and not get nervous without doing such things.
Although I think other things might work better than meditation, like yoga for instance.

I love this discussion. I love Lord Buddha's quote that you used. The Buddha was a very wise man who said some very wonderful and meaningful things. I am not a Buddhist but I have studied it a little. I have been given meditation instruction and I try to meditate. But it is very difficult to do. I find prayer easier. I pray frequently and regularly. Sometimes my prayers are short and just a few words. I find that both meditation and prayer helps sometimes with my anger. Sometimes not. Other times, I just have to let the anger go. Nothing will help until I let go.

In my busy life,I try to find quiet time for my self so that I can reflect. All of us need to have a break even for just a short while. So if I happen to pass by a quiet place I stay there and be silent to help clear my mind.

Although I come from a different faith, that story has a beautiful premise and a great lesson! Gaining nothing from an action is normally seen as a negative, but yet he lost so many emotions that people are better off not having in the first place. If I may ask, where is that story from?
Yes, I pray. I am a non-denominational Christian, but I was raised Catholic, and I grew up fearing God rather than trying to learn Him and understand Him. Only as an adult have I grown closer to Him, so praying comes much more easily to me now. I think the biggest emotional difference I've experienced after becoming a practicing Christian when for so long I didn't really believe He cared is that I fear and worry less now. I read something in the Bible once that mentioned that in order to be heard, you must truly believe God will answer you. Back in September, I prayed long and hard about a certain stress in my life--yet, this time, I prayed with the sole belief that the prayer would be answered. All odds were against me, and the problem had been a persistent one that had happened over and over, yet my prayer was answered. I couldn't believe it...and, ever since, every single prayer of mine has been answered.
Just knowing that if I have a stress in my life or anger over something or feel like I'm losing control of a situation I can pray and, at the very least, feel like I've gotten it off my chest until it's fixed is a great benefit of prayer. I'm a real estate business owner, and I'm currently going through a situation where I have to completely upgrade the entire sewage system of one of my properties...which can cost upwards of $8000 plus dollars, which is the majority of what I've saved over the past few years. Needless to say, I've been concerned about this for a few weeks, and I'm also on a time constraint with the county I live in, only having 45 days to upgrade the system and blow all this money out the window. I've been praying constantly about this. In the middle of writing this post, my father called and informed me he has a friend who is a licensed plumber who can probably get the job done for much less than $4000. This is after I found out that fees and permits from my county to do this project won't cost the $22,000 as originally estimated, but just $530.
Like I said, God has answered every prayer I've had since September of last year, when I finally put my full belief in His work. He's in the process of making things work with this real estate project of mine. It takes time, but nonetheless, I'm grateful. Prayer has a great effect on my life, so much so that every time I pray I have to start out with a list of "thank yous" for all the answered prayers of the past few months.

I grew up in a family where prayer was a very important part of our lives and for that reason, I did grow up knowing that prayer was a great way to help myself through problems that I faced in my life. When it comes to meditation, that is something that I really wasn't exposed to until I was in college and I was taking a class in personality. During that class, we learned a lot of different methods of self-understanding and that is where I learned about meditation. Since I learned to meditate, that is also something that I will do to calm down my nerves.

No matter what others said, for me praying play a vital part in my life to keep my faith with my religion. It is one way to show how grateful I am and one way to show thankfulness for God's blessings. Praying, meditation, self-reflection all these will make us become a better person.(^^)

Sometimes what you leave behind is much more important than what you stand to gain. I believe that my life is better, and less troubled when I am active spiritually. It is exercise for my soul. I do pray, and read the Bible. I love to sing spiritual songs and listen to Christian music. All of these things polish my spirit, in a way, and make it easier to live at peace.

To pray is to beseech, as to meditate is to just sit and ponder on the nothingness and in which you gain a glimpse of enlightenment after you let go of all the negativities in your life. A prayer may also be a personal commitment -- a commitment to let go and let the divine grace within you overflow and show you the path. :)

I think of god often but reciting verses doesnt make sense to me. I mean I am fine with praying at times with those verses. But daily - I dont think I can keep my mind that steady. If anything becomes a routine, my mind can stray. So rituals, no - I dont follow them. Occassionally, yes. Not frequently.
Anger - I have it. It comes with feeling of hurt mostly. If nobody interferes with me, and nobody has any designs on how I should live my life or what I should be doing, I am the coolest person on earth. Like today somebody was telling me to buy dad a new car. Dad is 77+. I dont drive. In another 2 years or so he wont have a license to drive. Of what use is a car at this stage? I can ask some agency to send a car over with a driver, right? We have a car as of now. So why a new one at this stage? Now, papa is stuck on that..I am unable to reasson with him. Traffic in Hyderabad is most unruly. It takes hours to travel in it. I'd rather he stay put and move out only when necessary.
To top it all, he wants a Nano. I am completely against that vehicle. I am for Reva or Wagon R.

I do love praying but i dont know if i should say it has helped in anger management. I dont really get angry that much so i dont think i have an issue with it but i can still say i do pray for God to always help me to overcome my anger whenever it gets too much. Maybe its that faith that helps me not to get over angry. Maybe its not, i really cant say. All in all, i believe prayer can do anything

I don't pray or meditate.
I just stay calm by keeping things in perspective. Sometimes, you really just have to process your thoughts and don't let them take over you.
I kinda think of the movie "Sherlock Holmes" when the actor Downey gets disrespected and says "This must not register on an emotional level." lol...and basically beats the hell out of the other guy without any anger.
It's really a subjective idea. If you don't let things bother you, they won't.

Yes, I practise zazen (Zen meditation) as Buddha originally practised. It is just sitting and stilling the mind, and then extended to walking mindfully, working mindfully. It is more of a journey than a destination, where I am learning something constantly about my relationship with the world.. The mind is full of thoughts and opinions, and it is those thoughts and opinions that need to be stilled, so "gaining nothing" is part of meditation, just as the Buddha said. _Derek
