What do you do when you're sleepy and you need to finish something?

I lack sleep.
At break of day, I got awakened by an excruciating pain in my stomach. I was forced to get up and go to the CR. I was vomiting with nothing to vomit together with the non-stop pain. I guess it took an hour before the pain subsided.
That is why I lack sleep. In the middle of work, I feel so sleepy that nothing is going inside my head and I felt like a zombie.
What did I do, you will ask definitely, to remedy the situation?
In times like this, I make some deviations. I would step out of my office and walk and talk to other people. I do not seem loitering because it is part of my job to coordinate and discuss matters in relation to QMS. When the sleepiness is gone, I would return to my room to continue what I was doing.
How about you?

Hi bingskee...
I hate being sleepy cz whenever I feel sleepy I am not in my bed or not even in my room . I used to sleep in the class when I was in high school, one time I sit in the front line and the subject was history. I couldn't help closing my eyes cz I was too tired and sleepless. I fell asleep for a while and then the teacher waked me up with a nasty face . I can't forget that day.
Since that I always washed my face whenever I am sleepy. It helps me alot.

Lots and lots of caffeine is the remedy for me. I don't really tend to sleep very well at all because of the fact that I've got a lot of anxiety problems in my life. So, in the morning I have to wake up and drink either a Pepsi or a cup of coffee. Then, if I still feel like I need some kind of caffeine boost I will take some Excedrin. On the days that are the worst for me, then I will resort to drinking energy drinks.

You need to see a doctor and find out what is causing the pain that keeps you awake.

Sometimes I just really have to push myself to say the very least. Granted by keeping my mind active, it can rather tend to keep me awake. If I have no way to focus on how tired I am, then I might be rather more productive. Granted, I don't think that is the easiest thing in the world to do or the healthiest, but it is just something that has to be done, until the day is rather finished.
Hasn't happened to be all that much recently. But it can most certainly make a couple of hours seem like a number of days. Just hoping that something productive is going to come right up that is going to distract me, where I can ride out the remaining time. Easier said than done but it is just what does have to be done. Just trying to push myself forward and do things until the job is done.

When I am sleepy and need to finish something, I tend to drink a cup of coffee to wake me up for a while. But when the coffee effect starts to drop down, I am having some body warm-ups and stretching, and do drink plenty of water afterwards to take secondary stimulating effect of a coffee I drank.

Considering I'm a stay at home mom, I have the luxury of taking a quick nap if I find myself falling asleep. I have found that about 1/2 an hour is all I need to really get rid of that overwhelming sleepiness and get back up to functioning level.

When I'm sleepy and I need to finish something, I like to step outside for some fresh air, or I put my fan on to wake me up with the cool air it emits.

I have not been sleeping much either. There is so much going on right now and every time I want to sleep thoughts enter my mind. I am sorry that you have not been feeling well today. I hope that you feel better soon. I am glad that you were able to walk around at work to keep yourself going.

I work late at night all through the morning. The major challenge for me is to stay awake during those times. It is really hard when you don't get enough sleep in the daytime. There are times when you have to do important things in the morning and you need to work at night. At these times I have to think of the best way to keep awake. So, I drink I a very dark coffee without sugar and I found it very effective. Of course I also tried to manage my time so I can get enough rest and sleep in the morning and be refreshed in the evening. It's very hard. There was this time when I really wanted to sleep and my eyes are really closing. I can't do that since I always talk to somebody during work hours. I can't take a nap of more than 5 minutes because the next class comes after the 5 minute break. So now, everytime I think that I am very sleepy I don't entertain it and I just try to divert my attention to other things. I always tell myself yeah you are sleepy but you can't sleep you have no choice but to be awake now. Maybe you can get enough sleep after the work hours. I think it is working. Mind control can sometimes help when the going gets tough.

I have two approaches - sleep it off with a nap or do something distracting.
Sometimes, my body just wants to sleep and if the circumstances and the environment permits, I sleep. I'm not fighting my own body if it wants to to sleep or stay awake. However, if I really need to stay awake, Tv or computer are my best friends. Coffee of any kind seems not to work on me so i just keep doing activities that will occupy my time and my mind. Walking is a good option except that i don't have much of a space.

to do it with a nap is not an option for me. even without the boss looking, i think that should not be done at work.
doing something distracting: the first one is what i did - to walk around. the second option is to do jumping jacks, or stretching exercises.

hi there bingskee!
first, i advised you to see a doctor if your stomach pain still persist.
usually when i get really sleepy and tired i catch up a nap. i really sleep haha. when i had a tiring review program during the boards, during the boring discussion at the middle of it, i feel sleepy so what i did is to talk and take notes but then its not effective .i still felt sleepy. so the best thing i always did is to nap!

It seems like your body is telling you it needs more rest because of the stress you're putting in on it. I think it would be best to take a break from work and rest the whole day so your body can recuperate from the stress. sometimes our body can only take so much that it will start to "rebel" and not coordinate against our wishes because of the abuse we tend to make on it. what's the use of working for a living if the work is eating away at your body. better take good care of yourself so you can enjoy your work and more importantly, your life ;) have a good day!

hi, gypsygoth. that is very true. that day i went to work because there is work that needs to be done but when the work sked is not tight, and i feel sleepy, i choose to stay at home and rest. i can always feel my body rebel when allergies surface.
thanks for the tip.

I make the room cold, drink strong coffee or coke, or take a short walk. It can be difficult though. Have been like that and it's not fun.

I lack sleep also with all the routine work at home [home-based work] including house hold chores shared by my wife. The thing is i could hardly get only 4 to 6 hours sleep at night as i need to get up early for sending my kids to school. So, by mid afternoon while doing work, the tendency to get sleepy is inevitable, and what i do is to POWER NAP for 30 minutes, actually a siesta, lol! I need to rest and take naps as i can't really concentrate on working.

it depends on how big that need really is.. it's seldom that big (the need) plus how tired I am. if very tired you are seldom productive, and also easier making mistakes. So if I am really sleepy I go to sleep for at least 2-3 hours, since if I don't I probably fall asleep (faint) anyway.

I also sometimes sleepy at work especially if I don't get enough sleep the last night.A cup of coffee could really help to wake me up,pop rock music could help for a while too.I also try to walk a little and talk to other people too to surpass the sleepiness that I'm going through.
