You are lucky if you don't eat much rice

Asian people love eating rice. Rice contains high carbohydrate that triggers diabetes. One of the ways to avoid it is to stop consuming it or lessen the consumption. Moreover, rice, in my opinion, is not natural anymore. It contains whitening substance to make it white. I only eat rice once a day. In the morning and evening I only eat fruit. What do you say about this?

I stopped eating rice when I started dieting seriously. I was way overweight for my peace of mind and I immediately embarked on a weight loss program. Part of it was cutting down on carbs, and that means forgetting about rice first and foremost. It was hard at first, because rice is a staple food in my country, but I had to endure it, and eventually I got used to it. Now instead of rice I eat wheat bread, potato, sweet potato, veggies and fruits. I do eat rice occasionally, like when there are family gatherings (Christmas, New Year, birthdays, etc) and I'm just happy that this happens far apart.

Hi, doryvien, and Hatley. We'd better not wait till diabetes comes to us. Prevention is all it takes. I still eat rice but have more fruit and vegetable. Thank for responding. Have a great weekend.

Eating rice doesn not make you sick. I still eat rice once or twice but have more fruit and vegetable. We have imported rice and I am worried that it already contain additatives that will be not good for health. See my point?

It really depends on one's metabolism and how their body uses up the carbohydrates that they eat. I know of a lot of friends, ladies at that, who eat like construction workers and yet never gain a pound. They say that a cup of rice is equivalent to five tablespoons of sugar. I come from a family of diabetics and my mom's doctor actually is recommending that she ate more carbs like rice when she was still alive. He said that it was a fallacy that carbohydrates such as rice was bad for diabetics. The fiber in the rice actually helps diabetics level or stabilize their blood sugars. But then again, if you eat more than the required amounts then chances are you will be fat. Anything taken in excess is bad, but rice like any food if taken in the right quantities is not bad.

Actually, lessening the consumption of rice doesn't lessen the risk of diabetes nor does it help you lose weight. It is the most important in the food pyramid so you need to consume the right amount of it for a balanced diet.I'm also Asian and we eat rice almost every meal.I try to go for brown rice as it is more natural & healthier but it's expensive.

I am thinking of having brown rice as well but I will see it if my daily expense rises due to having brown rice, I will have to go back white rice but only have a small amount of it and have more veggi and fruit since they cost less here in my country.

Does it mean, people who don't eat rice don't get diabetes at all?
The problem is not with the rice, but the way we treat it. Earlier, people used to take brown rice (rice that's with the husk not removed) which is rich in fiber. Today people take just polished rice and that's the problem.
Our ancestors used to lead a healthy life and their daily diet was rice mainly. They had to work physically a lot and their rice was rich in fiber.
But today, we have lot of machines to assist in our daily routine and we consume more white rice. Less work and more carbohydrates, that causes every ailment, not only diabetes.
Diabetes is more related to genes rather than food habits, I think. I've seen people who consume large quantity of liq*or, yet they don't have diabetes. And few people occasionally consume liq*or have diabetes.

You are right. Today's rice is preserved and polished. What I am afraid of is not the rice but what it contains due to the rice processing. Brown rice is much better but to get it costs a lot of money now. We also have to be very careful about fruit and vegetable as they contain pesticide that will cause health problem.

I don't understand the lucky part.
Rice has way less carbohydrate as potatoes, pasta, pizza, bread etc.
So if you want to stay healthy it's better to turn to rice and skip the rest.
There are plenty of kinds or rice you can buy, this includes the brown one.
What I say? I think fruit and vegetables is the best. Fast food is a big NO and so is everything with sugar or where sugar is added too (unless it comes from fruit).
Also diabetes is seldom found with people who are eating only rice but a typical illness in the western world with people who are overweighted.

You are 100% right, WakeUpKitty. What I am trying to say is that we have to be careful since rice is no longer natural. There are added materials to eat to make it stay longer. Indonesia is the biggers rice importer. We import rice from other Asian countries. Long-stored rice is easily destroyed by bugs. To avoid it, they use what do you call it materials to eliminate bugs. You got what I mean, I think.

I am from India and we consume rice one or two times during the day. Yes most of the Asian people love consuming lots of rice and during two times a day. I think it is okay to decrease the amount of rice and to increase the amount of vegetables. Here in our places most people take one or two cup of rice and two or three cups of vegetables with it. I think vegetables helps to keep one healthy. Also it is good to take vegetable salads.

yanzalong tell me about it I am a diavetic and more than a scant fourht of a cup of rice shoots my blood glucose sky high. white rice is too high carb. eat brown rice as its lower in carbg plus its got antioxidants to help you be heart healthy.I think that white is probably had the outer husk taken off which would make it much healthier for you.

i know white rice is not good for the health because when it is broken down, it turns to sugar which can trigger diabetes. i eat rice a lot but i know i have to lessen it. if its brown rice then it is healthier.
yeah, nothing is really natural and pure nowadays. i feel like there's chemicals in everything we eat.

It's great of you to have done that. How much do you weigh now? Walking for 1 hour will also help you reduce your weight. You can combine exercise and diet to reach your goal quickly.

Please refrain from making a hasty generalization which targets rice as not good at all. I do believe that everything is harmful if done in excessive ways, same goes to all kinds of food. Asians do eat rice as their staple food and have a hard time eating without it. But we can see that not all Asians do have diabetes. Also, can you be specific with the whitening substance for rice? Then from there we can discuss if that item is really harmful in humans. It doesn't mean that anything not natural anymore means harmful, isn't it? But yes, you should consume little rice if you have weight problems or is advised to move away from carbohydrates. But making it seem eating rice is quite unlucky is another thing in my opinion. Just my two cents in here.

Though sometimes diabetes is got from inheritance and more often from unhealthy lifestyle, no one is prone from suffering to diabetes unless we choose a healthier life style. I have observed that rice is somehow over consumed by Asians and most of them just seems as if they cannot do without it. I have had several nannies and I bet they would not take aything else in the morning and even if I have sweetpotato or bread that I eat in the morning, they always wanted to cook rice. I think it is ok to eat rice but not like 6 times a day. I think reducing the number and the amount of rice that we consume everyday and been flexible enough to try other foods is the better way to a better health.

Mashnn, you are always right about this. It seems to me that you are a doctor who knows a lot about health. If you see my profile picture, I am always on the go. Lol. It's the same here in Indonesia. Most of us don't feel satisfied if they don't eat rice. I am lucky I can control it. Even I am able to go without it for at least 14 hours.

That's what I've gotta be. I've been doing it since I was much younger than today. I used to like Kungfu and practiced it a lot. Now I prefer walking, jogging, hashing, and mountainbiking. To me , it does not matter if I eat rice cause I move a lot. What about you? Do you exercise a lot?

I have limited my rice consumption to only about half of a cup since my younger days. I only eat small portions of food because I want to control my weight. Since I have been doing this from as far back as I can remember, I feel full with little food intake. Fruits would be fine but it has recently become too expensive. Healthy foods are no longer affordable. Many are aware of the importance of fruits in the diet but the budget is often not enough. The only food available that is within reach of the ordinary citizens are the junk foods. Do you know how much a single banana costs nowadays if compared to the junk food we see along the side streets?

Fruit is cheap in my country. I like going into the forest and see farmers inside there who grow banana trees. A bunch of banana costs about $0.5 in my city. How much does it cost there in Manila?

Rice contains great amounts of carbohydrates. I believe it's only carbohydrates with a little fibre. Truly dangerous food! Anyone who eats rice at least twice a day will definitely be growing fatter everyday. So, leave it for select days or better yet, stop it completely. There's lots of healthier foods that even taste better. If rice is the staple diet of your country, why follow everyone else? You can eat different and everybody will be jealous of your health! :D

I say it is good that you are taking an interest in prevention for better health. However, as others have mentioned, brown rice is a healthy alternative to white rice and although it is more expensive because there is better food value in it a little brown rice goes a longer ways, I think. My favorite is the brown jasmine rice, although at times it is hard to find good quality brown jasmine here in the US, at least where I live.
I too only eat rice once a day although I do not eat rice every day. I do not eat rice if I eat pasta for example. I love fruit, but do not find fruit alone enough for breakfast and dinner. I like some meat, too, and a couple vegetables.

I made red rice tonight and it was different from what we usually have, but very good. You are right about the chemicals! I was growing some of my food hydroponically (in water) for a while, which is a very clean way to grow the food, but chemicals are still involved. I enjoy reading about the people who grow their greens in aquatic systems wherein they also farm fish, and the fish provide the fertilizer.

I also heard that there was black rice as well. Have never seen it myself. The problem now is that all soils have been polluted by chemical substances like fertilizers. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, we still can't be free from it.

The same to me. I don't buy fruit in supermarket. It's too expensive. I go to traditional markets where fruit is a lot cheaper and more natural than that in supermarkets.

Do you know that not all rice triggers diabetes?
There are rice that are good for the body and does not cause diabetes such as brown rice, red rice and black rice. The best of these rice is the black rice. It does not taste the same as white rice but it's worth eating if you wish to lower your sugar content.
Those three rice I've mentioned above are high in fiber kind of rice and also gives you energy. Because they are high in fiber, they make you easily full too. I hope this helps.
If you wish to know more, you can search the net about them. Happy MyLotting!

I've heard that it's being held back in a tight leash here in Asia. But I don't really know the origin of it aside from that it's harvested and mostly sold un-milled. It's container, the husk, is intact and so are the nutrients it has so it's healthier than the other rice.
When I searched the net for this, I only saw that it's sold commonly in China and Indonesia. What we got here, in the Philippines, I think, is an import of that product from those countries...
I think it's better if you do some research about them in the world wide web if you wish to know more. Happy MyLotting!

Yes this is right. Actually we need to have a valance diet and watch over on what we eat because too much of it can result to nutritional abnormalities or even cause some health sickness and this is according to some health experts. Healthy eating is really very hard to monitor and maintain especially if you can not provide all the foods that is needed for balancing nutrients in the body.

Rice is probably good for athletes, since they need a lot of carbohydrate to burn when racing. Carbohydrate is the power for them. So, it depends on how the individuals are.

Just want a clarification sir. I'm a nurse and from everything that I've read, high carbohydrate intake does not trigger diabetes. It may be a factor that increases your likelihood to develop the condition. Diabetes is caused by malfunctioning insulin or lack of insulin.
I do agree that you need to have a balanced diet. Carbohydrate intake should be limited to an amount commensurate to your body's energy consumption.

Those suffering from diabetes are advised not to eat rice because his or her pancreas does not function well. So what he eats will not turn into energy. If he has rice the insuline level will go up. What actually causes diabetes is actually things that destroy pancreas like ice, or iced food. The function of pancreas is firstly it warms the food. If cold things come into the stomach, th pancreas has to work harder to warm it. In the long run pancreas gets weak and finnaly loses its function.
