Finally I got a job!

In my country it is very difficult to get a job if you are over 65 years old. And although I can live with my retirement pension, I miss the challenge of working. I just got a job for 2 hours a week teaching language and math to a boy that a friend of one of my daughters, who is rich and powerful, wants to help out of poverty. The boy is very intelligent and he got him a good school instead of the bad ones the poor people usually have. But the boy is behind his class and I must teach him so that he jumps to another social class in time. He offered me these two hours and although I have mostly taught at the university or helped my grandchildren, it is a challenge.
I´m specially happy since I have been secluded this last year because of my lymphoma and chemo. I wanted to share my joy with you. Would you be happy with such an offer? What do you think of it?

Oh,that is so awesome marguicha,I'm happy for you! I know how it feels to finally have a job after a long time! My parents, ages 70(dad)and 62(mom) still want to work, they said they want to earn money from their own effort. Luckily,my dad,who is a contractor, got a contract again, even though it is just a renovation of a house,I can feel my dad's enthusiasm and happiness!
I'm a stay at home mom and I a job offer online would really make me happy, lol!

All the people near me have had a job until they got very ill. But I had to retire from the job I had at the university, because it was sold to some other people and they changed the professors. I do some work online, but the thing that makes me happier now is the relation with mylotters. Now I will have a close relatioship with this boy I will be teaching as I want to get the best out of him.

I've never taught, but I know that Maggie was always excited when she got a student to teach English to. However, her health isn't up to doing it anymore.
I'm glad to hear that your health is so much better that you can teach again, even if it is just a couple of hours a week.
When I was in high school I was tutored a couple of hours a week on math so I could pass and graduate - I had a really bad teacher in 10th grade that really set my already poor math skills back.

I will have to start by teaching this boy how to study. There is a way to read and there is an easier way to learn too. Fortunatly I know that.

Yes, I also believe like you that there is a way to read and there is an easier way to learn and good teacher should make his or her student aware of this method. If he or she can do it, he or she should be treated as an ideal teacher and would surely be respected by all.

good for you marguicha!
i think it is the same for any country, the elderly have limited employment options. here in thr philippines, the retirement age is 65 years old and those who choose to work beyond that age are usually stuck in retail selling jobs or handling their own businesses. the bpo industry has hired slightly older employees so that is a plus. other establishments also hire the elderly but usually the tasks are really simple and menial like door openers/greeters.
anyway, i hope everything pans out right for you and the boy. a job whether two hours a day only or 12 hours a day is still a job as long as it is paying. i'm sure you'll be a good teacher and you'll impart your knowledge to the boy.
do keep us posted.
cheers!!!

hi marguicha.
$200 a month for 2 hours a week is indeed very nice!!!
i'm sure you'll do well in helping the child be at the top of his class. it'll take time definitely but once you've established a good relationship with the child, it'll be much easier and you cna gauge what area you need to focus on. additionally, you'll be able to identify the msot effective way to teach the child. everyone responds differently to the teaching methods so once you've identified what type of learner the child is and what method of learning he responds to most effectively, everything will be smooth sailing.
do keep us posted with this one marguicha. we're all rooting for your success!
cheers!

I am not only happy for the pay (although I think that around US$200 a month for 2 hours a week is very nice), but I also like the challenge. I want to take him to the top of his class.

Same here in my country, once you hit late 40's it's difficult to land a job even when you're armed with a college/university degree and with years and years of experience. Because you'll be competing with younger applicants who probably have the same qualification as you but are less expensive and more aggressive, your chances of getting a job becomes smaller...Good that you found a teaching job again, it's a good way to keep your mind active and make yourself busy, not to mention the extra income that goes with it. Congrats!

hi doryvien I am in the US and after being out of work for
almost two years my son a computer programmer had to take a job
as electronic repairer and 15 dollars an hour when he had made in computer programming a lot more but like he said a job mom is a job as now I can feed my face and pay my bills.see he is unfortunate in that he is 52 opposed to new 22 yr olds grabbing programmer jobs when they have no experience at all and he has years of it. not fair but again a job is still a job.he has years of experience in computer programming

Sometimes I have evil thoughts when that happens: I bet the owners of the companies are older guys. And I have the wicked wish that they had to try to get a new job.

@Hatley,
Your son is right, a job is a job and it still is better than nothing. I remember those times when computer programmers were in demand and they can command good salaries. Well, your son is not alone, there are still many who are in the same boat. At least now he's back in the market

Thanks, Janey! I just can´t wait until I begin. I think about how I will start even in the shower. I hope the boy is as bright as the say. Maybe the first thing I´ll tell him is that not knowing something is not being dumb. He might encounter some bullies at his new school.

I think I would be extremely happy, I used to do what you are doing now teaching children in their house (I teach math, and computer) and it was fun. I get chance to know each child better than their teacher in the classroom since it's one to one and most if the time their grade increase after the first or second meeting, even the teacher can tell. So, it always feels good to help children in some ways.

Many times a child does not learn well because there are too many children in a classroom and the teacher has to explain so that what she teaches reaches most of them. The ones that have more or less learning abilities have problems. The second ones don´t understand, the first ones get bored.
You asked me about teaching in a easy way. In my experience, children people learn faster if you first turn abstract concepts in what I call "pears and apples". That´s how I taught Algebra to my granddaughter years ago. She freaked at x and y but if the same equations were put into pears and apples, she would do them. She could not understand why you could not mix x and y, but she understood immediatly that noone wanted fruit salads. After she got that, she could manage any letter or number. She got the dread out of her sistem. I think each case is different: that is why tutoring a single child is so good if you are aware of the child´s needs.

The same picture is also seen in those schools in our country where education is free. A teacher has to look after a lot of students. As a result he cannot pay attention to each and everybody in the class room. Those students who are intelligent can manage to survive, but those who are below standard and need special attention suffer the most. They lose interest in studies and some even leave schools as drop-outs. I think this is the picture in almost all the underdeveloped countries and even developing countries like India. Unless the socioeconomic condition can be changed, this picture would continue to persist.

Congratulations to you for finding a job! It sounds like this is a very good job, not many hours but a little bit more money and as you said a challenge. it's only two hours per week though, will this be enough to help him with his studies before it's the end of the year for the school system there?

I'm so glad to hear you've been offered this job. It is very rewarding to be able to teach, especially an intelligent pupil who just hasn't had a chance to learn. I think the teacher gets as much benefit from this type of situation as the student. Congratulations!

I think this is wonderful, one of the most difficult things to get back afer you have been ill, is your self worth. you fight so hard to recover but after you reach that goal, you find that you must look for another goal and of course the older you are the harder it is to gain this knowledge. Blessings, Im sure you will do well.

Thanks, friend. I have not been in the best for years after I lost my husband and my grandson and my closest friend, a doctor, says that that might have triggered the lymphoma. When you lose your life partner it´s difficult to find a good reason to go on. This work will provide it. The challenge is far more important than the money although I will be paid abount US$200 a month for 2 hours work in a week.

That is good to hear. It is nice to be able to take vacations. I have never been on a cruise before and I hope to take one in a few years. As long as I save I should be able to do. But that for me is the hard part. I'm always finding something that I would like to buy. I'm doing better though.

I think it's wonderful that you are able to help someone who is so willing to learn despite their social background. As you said, hopefully this child is being given a fantastic opportunity to better themselves, and maybe in time be able to help their own family as well.
It's a shame that you have been in seclusion because of your illness, but God willing, that time has passed you and you are able to benefit yourself from helping this child.
Good luck with your endeavours in your new project.

I had to be aways from people while on chemo because my defenses were too low. Now I´m fine and have other problems. I am partying so much that I will have to do a diet to go down some extra pounds. I suppose that having to work a bit will help me do some exercise also.

The weight loss will happen when it happens. I'd think that after being in seclusion for so long that you'd want to exercise your mind first.
Everything will work out for the best for you I'm sure, just keep your mind open to new things and they will come to you.

Hi Marguicha,
That is great that you found work. I am trying to find ways to suppliment my income since Randy cannot work do to his serious foot condition (Charot's Foot: a foot problem where the bones are breaking down and he has lost the arch in his foot. Right now we are trying to keep his foot mobile so it can heal without having to do surgery or worse having it amputated). We live with my parents and my brother and it has been hard living here because my parents keep asking when we are going to get our fiancial aid money from school so we can pay their bills (they are behind and expect Randy and I to pick up the pieces)I keep on telling that they need to understand that we have our bills to pay (storage, car insurance, gas for the car, and our pre-paid cell phone to add minutes). we are also trying very hard to save up so we can move out. When we first moved down here Randy and I said that we would pay for food and pay the gas bill (she asked for a 100.00 a month and the gas costs rhat much), now she is asking for an additional 300.00 on top of the gas bill and we cannot afford it. Besides my brother is living here rent free and does not have to pay anything which makes me mad and I feel it is unfair. I would love to be able to work from home where I can set my own hours and make money.
I am really happy that you found work and are able to share your wisdom with someone who needs help.

I wasn´t really expecting this. My daughter called me last week to ask me how this child could be helped and if I could give her some tips. The wealthy godfather thought that he could buy him a laptop and other gadgets. I told her that is was not so simple to educate. It´s not a matter of "tips". She told this gentleman what I had said and he offered me this job.
