Why can't they let go of their socks with holes?

I don't know why I'm so bothered by such an unimportant thing like wearing socks with holes in it. I have a relative who I visit every week. I don't understand why they keep wearing socks that have holes (take note: plural) in them. Even if in the house only. I will never wear socks with holes. It totally defeats the purpose of the sock. It's not like socks are expensive either. And when you have company around, I don't think it's polite to walk around in them. Do you still wear sock if they have holes already?

Not going to lie, I continue to wear socks with holes in them. While you may think that this is something that's 'low-cost', that may not be the case for everyone. As well as that, how many things in our lives can we consider 'low-cost'? If we add all of these things together they do add up, and sometimes you just need to know the point at which spending has to stop. When I consider something like socks I would think along the lines of "Ok, a new pair of socks is going to cost a few dollars. For this same price I could buy a bag of rice, noodles, or pasta; and/or even some broccoli or frozen mixed vegetables." So the decision ultimately comes down to a trade-off between purchasing a new pair of socks that frankly I don't even need (in my opinion), or eating a good dinner. Food, for me, takes priority over most other things. While this isn't to say that I won't replace a sock that is more hole than sock (getting a bit too worn at that point) I see nothing wrong with continuing to wear socks that have seen some wear. Perhaps after I finish studies, if I'm able to land a well-paid job, then I can look at replacing my socks on a more regular basis, but until then I am quite happy with what I am doing right now.

I suppose it would depend on the kind of guests, as a younger adult I'm pretty comfortable wearing 'whatever' if it's my close friends who are coming around for a visit. Perhaps if someone like the prime minister or a more unfamiliar guest came visiting I would consider switching to a nicer outfit as a whole, otherwise to be honest I don't see any need to dress up particularly nicely. But then I wouldn't really be bothered if someone I was visiting was wearing socks with holes either-

I am very frugal myself. I don't buy new stuff unless I really need them. Food is also on the top of my expenses. But clothing is also a basic need. If I've got one pair of socks with holes, I normally won't use them anymore. Maybe only when I sleep at night. I have other socks anyway. I will just wash them more often. I'm sure you have other socks as well. Like I said what started me on this discussion is those people who walk around in socks with holes even when guests are around. Maybe they can wear a better pair, you know. But hey, to each his own. I'm glad you're cool with what you have. Thanks for responding!

On that note though, if I know I will be visiting someone else, I'll tend to go for a pair of socks without the holes. I think generally speaking the onus of consideration should be on the guest, not the housekeeper.

I admit yes, I have some socks with holes in it. I don't know exactly what's stopping me from buying new ones. Maybe because I'm so much in a tight budget right now. Yes, it's not expensive, but it will still affect my budget. I also sew all the holes in my socks. Sometimes the sewed holes opens again, but I still can't find a reason to buy new socks. It's also because I don't have time to look for socks.

I do agree that if your budget is tight, it's hard to buy new stuff. I'm like that. I'm very frugal. Just yesterday I walked for 40 minutes from my work to my home because I ran out of tokens for the bus and I didn't want to pay $3. But what started me out on this discussion is that some people think it's fine to wear socks with holes when guests are around and they can see those holes. I'd rather go barefoot. I think you don't do that because you try to mend the socks still. Or do you? Thanks for your response!

I agree. I will be embarrassed too to wear my socks with holes when there are guests at home. I would rather go barefoot too.

I definitely understand your point of view. I don't see why some people can't just throw those socks with holes in them away. They look so disgraceful. My question is, how do men get holes in their socks in the first place? You could buy them the best sock out there and they would have a hole in it in a maybe a month, but probably less than that. I don't think I have ever developed holes in my socks before, but I know that if I did, the second the hole I appeared, those socks would be in the trash.

You know, come to think of it, all the people I know who wear socks with holes in them are men. I guess us women really are more refined.

Some people simply do not care, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But it does come across as quite rude walking around in old socks with holes when you have company. It stops looking like you don't care about your socks and begins seeming like you don't care about your guests. I never wear socks that have holes in them. At least not since gym class in 8th grade when we had to take off our sneakers for gymnastics and my socks had holes in them like I was too poor to buy new ones. It was really embarrassing, even though no one commented on it.

I agree. I think it's rude. It seems like you didn't bother to be presentable enough. And that would reflect how much you value your guest. About your gymnastics incident, I'm glad no one commented on it. Your embarrassment would have been much worse if you got teased about it. I guess you had pretty nice classmates. Thanks for your response!

There are some socks with holes, it is designed for health conditions. Like, elastic stockings, the toes are need to be exposed. I can't think it is fine to wear socks with holes at home.
