I love Mardi Gras. which is unusual in the UK.
in the UK, we have the rather uninspiring interpretation of Shrove tuesday. which is PANCAKE day. a ploy to use up eggs and milk before lent.
I much prefer the approach of eat loads, drink loads, party hard and gorge yourself silly,.
but seeing as I don't celebrate lent, I don't even have the excuse of getting in however long lent is worth of fun before it's off limits.
I just have a deep love of New Orleans culture, so I make Gumbo, Jambalaya, red beans and rice, cornbread, king cake, beignets and so on, have people over, and we have a party with masks and beads and great food and good classic old style Jazz music. how it used to be before it was twiddly and pretentious.
so you've probably noticed, you're celebrating Mardi Gras somewhat late, but whatever the time of year it makes a great theme for a party.
in New Orleans the beads are thrown from floats during parades. they also throw Doubloons. they're fantastic. beautiful aluminium coins in all kinds of colours that the different Krewes have minted to throw out. loads of interesting and often funny designs. I've got a little connection and I think they're charming.

Mardi Gras is quite a celebration. I have never been. Used to want to--not so much anymore. Too many people. Here is an article on the subject for your information:

If they have a parade it is normal for the people in the parade to throw out beads. We had a small one in our town about a month ago so I took my boys to the parade and they got so many beads. That was all we stayed for, as soon as the parade was over we left. The party downtown went on for many hours after the parade.
