I finally joined a GYM!

I have been talking about it for years, but I just never did it until now. I joined a gym last week with one of my co-workers. We signed up for a package for 4 sessions with a personal trainer. We decided to go at the same time for the trainer and to drag each other there. I need to lose at least 70 pounds. She just needs to tone up a little bit, but we both need the motivation from each other.
I have only been 3 times so far and 2 of those were with the trainer. OMG! I am so sore today. He really kicked our butts yesterday.
Do you have a gym membership? Do you go regularly or do you have to drag yourself? Does having someone to go with you make it easier to get yourself there?

the only thing with a gym is that you really have t make a commitment to going every week or you will be wasting our money. my co-worker works full time and does have a gym membership but she leaves work early some days to go to the gym and her membership is flexible. she will be cutting it back in the summer because she plays ultimate frisbee.
as for me, we live in a 5 level condo plus i try to go for a walk every day if i am feelingok, so no, i don't have a gym membership.

Yes, I have a gym membership . I also have a virtual gym in my house, a treadmill, an elliptical, weight bench, and a pull up bar lol.
Being accountable to someone else is VERY helpful, I run with friends most often, if I can't I have the treadmill staring me down. I've used personal trainers before too, again, very helpful to get jump started when you have no idea what to do. Keep track of their training plans and other things they tell you to do and it will help you make your own plan on days when you don't see the trainer.

That's awesome! Good for you for doing something for yourself and really for your children too. I have never joined a gym, although I joined one of those toning places a couple different times. I can't afford it now though. I'd like to have a personal trainer so they could customize my workout to specific areas I need work on.

Good for you! Can't wait to see some pics of how skinny you're getting. Just don't make my mistake and let the weight creep back up on you.
I haven't been to the gym in ages. I need to lose weight again, but just don't have the motivation for it right now.

Remember that you are gaining muscle while losing fat, and muscle weighs more than fat.. so although you may have only lost 10 pounds, you probably lost more than that in fat and just replaced it with some muscle. Try not to focus too much on your weight and focus more on how you feel, how much more energy you have, and how well your clothes are fitting. And try not to get discouraged when you stop losing because it will slow down once your body gets used to what you're doing.

My husband and I joined a gym about a month ago. They have child care on site and it is FREE for up to two hours a day. They have a pool, while the hours are not that great due to the size of the pool (regular lap length but only 4 lanes across) and the amount of swim lessons (only public pool in a 20 mile radius) there is enough time to get some water work in. They have a full set of cardio machines....with TV's set to different stations and a radio frequency for each which has the audio for the different stations so you do not have to try and read the subtitles if you have a radio with head phones.
They offer a free one hour session with a trainer and a one hour session learning how to use the machines correctly.
They offer classes like water aerobic, zumba, kickboxing, yoga, pilates, spinning, step aerobics and target classes like ABS and ARMS. You can attend as many of the classes as you want during a 7 week session for an additional $15. That has been worth it.
Previous gyms I joined had a limit on the number of classes you could take in a set session or number of weeks. Or you had to pay per type of class.

I belong to my local YMCA and this is the first time out of several tries that I've really stuck with a work-out plan. I joined to begin with primarily because the membership included a season pass to the community pool so that was a huge savings since I'd been going just about every day during the summer. For quite awhile I was mainly just using the YMCA indoor pool the rest of the year but I finally started using the other equipment a couple months ago. I've always been a strong swimmer but I discovered swimming alone wasn't going to get the job done! I delivered mail for 18 years, walking about 15 miles or more per day, so when I had to go on disability retirement I put on weight for the first time and my life and just couldn't seem to lose it.
I've actually managed to keep myself motivated even without having someone to go with me. I wish I had someone to go along but I just don't right now, but I've met a lot of people there who go all the time so that's been nice. I try to go at least 5 or 6 days a week and to vary my workouts with some cardio training and some weight training.
I've watched others with personal trainers while working out and they sure do kick butt! I've thought of signing up for one to give myself more of a jump-start and to get some tips on exactly what to do to work my problem areas but I haven't done that yet.

I don't have a membership but I think that if I had someone to go with me that it would make going a lot easier. I have been to gyms before through periods of time and I was pretty sore when I would go too. I have always wanted to try some of the work out classes that the local gym offers..not jazzercise but that taebo looks kinda fun..lol.

That sounds awesome. I have always been intimidated by the thought of having a personal trainer. But I guess they probably know to push you right to your limits (and since they are there watching you, you probably feel more pressure to actually go through with it). Congrats on your first, big step!

That is awesome! I always loved the gym but hadn't been a part of one in a long time. But I just joined one last week. I love it and go twice a week that's all I can get to because I have only a small window to do it.I actually really enjoy going, but I have never had a personal trainer. Hope you like it!!

I did not have any gym membership becuase I don't have the time because of work. I also read some articles that going to the gym doesn't really loose that much weight you want. They said that it will only slash you few amounts of calories compared to other physical activity. However, it is nice for you to have your friends on the gym. It will helps you motivate because having companion can really add your willingness to visit the gym frequently. This is also another reasn why I haven't enrolled to any gym, I don't have someone to be with.

It does make it easier for me to go to the gym if someone's with me. You need someone to help you and motivate you to get your goals. And also it can be pretty boring in the gym when you have no one to talk to. If you go to the gym by yourself, you should make some gym friends so that you would'nt be bored doing those exercises over and over. I go to the gym by myself and I've been a member for two years now.

I belonged to a gym for a year in highschool and then had access to the various school gyms my college had on campus, but now that I'm newly graduated, I don't have access to a gym or money to pay for a membership somewhere. So instead I work out on my own in my basement or go out for walk/jog. Generally I do need motivation to go work out, but for me the motivation usually needs to come from within and not from someone else -I'm pretty stubborn and don't like to be forced into something when I'm not in the mood! LOL
I have always wanted to try working out with a trainer though. I think they'd be able to teach me new exercises to get the body I want and how to optimize my workouts for the best burn in a decent amount of time. I wish you the best of luck with your weight loss journey and just focus on being a happy, healthy person, no matter what the scale says! Everything else will follow. :)

I have never been to a gym but I wanted to at some point of my life. I just couldn't go because it felt like it was too much of a trouble and I didn't have anyone to go with. It's true that you get more motivated when you are going with someone. Some people are just to shy to go by themselves and they would need a companion just to be able to go to the gym. And that's not motivation yet. It's just to check out the gym. Signing up would also need a lot of convincing from the companion.
Anyway, you did a good thing in signing up. You said it yourself, you need some working out to lose that 70 pounds. Good luck and you can always find inspiration or motivation to keep you going there to that gym.

Hi Lily! I had been contemplating of joining a gym but i am soooo concerned about the rate. here, it would cost around 3000 pesos monthly. I had been thinking, why cant i just jog along the park to save me some cash. I have started jogging just last month. i hope its working. If it still is a failure, i might consider joining a gym or purchasing some of those shakes from Herbalife.. eewwwr... dang... i really need to loose weight...

I used to have a gym membership but I was only able to enjoy it for one month. The membership was supposed to be for six months but I was very busy with my work that I was not able to fully enjoy it. Like you I was also assigned with a personal trainer. I normally attend the gym sessions by myself.
I just realized that I was not putting to much effort on going to the gym. I always give myself excuses. It was good at the start but started to lay low towards the end. That's why I have not been able to regain my slim body up to now.
Indeed, consistent effort and commitment is needed to be healthier.(,")
