Today I read an article that says that short but hard work outs are more beneficial than long but very light exercises. I disagree with this statement as I know long and light exercise is burning more fat and safe to your heart. After strenous exercise, heart takes longer time to recover. What's your take on this my friends?

I think hard exercises bettter than long light exercises. As we look in the present we can clearly verify. Most of the people go for karate as well for gym classes and these classes have a validity of 4 hours per day. The people in these classes are allowed to do vigirous and heavy exercise for a short time but yet they are healthy and fit. Which shows that hard exercises will make us more fit .

I have answered to other friends earlier in this discussion. Could you please read my answer? What I mean here is very close to one's heart power and efficiency. You can only do the short and hard one if you are already a well trained person. If you are well trained, you must have stronger heart with highest maximum heart rate.

in my opinion .no matter short and hard exercise or light and long exercise,if the way you found is suit for you ,this is the better exercise ,but the important point is keep on exercise

I think short and hard exercise is always better than long and light if you are going with some good diets, but of course you have to continue your routine up to minimum 6 months to see the effects. Because when you do hard exercise (although it is for short time) calorie burning rate is too high so you have to take healthy foods to overcome that.

Hiya yanza, Just remembering a Woman on Eurosport who had just won a Triathlon and she was 45. At the very start she could not run to the Bus without getting out of breath and quite badly too. She sort out a Trainer a Personal one and asked him if she could get fitter than what she was. At first it was killing her to do the slightest thing and from there she went to where she was in that Triathlon a real winner not only because she won that but because she proved that Women of that age can overcome their problems to a point. She said she was very lucky to find a very good expert Trainer and that did help enormously. Part of it I suppose was her determination to improve when she realized in how bad a condition she was and wanted to lose weight safely but surely it all started from there. I donĀ“t know her name but she is there somewhere this was about 10 years back now but she has my admiration for just trying. I think very gentle exercise at the start is a must. It serves of nothing to run 20 miles one Day and not do anything for the next 6 months so it has to be continual more or less so the body does not suffer. Me a lot of walking is what I do and that is about the only thing I can do at the moment as I suffered a shoulder injury which still keeps repeating if I try to do something much stronger.xxx

Yes, I know her. she was an author of Heart Rate Monitor. She proved that she could be stronger than any other younger people. Her name was Sally Edward (I hope I am right) She used her heart rate monitor every time she trained. I learned a lot from her by having bought her book when I was in the UK.

Hiya yanza, Think it might be her I am not sure though. But what really matters is that she has proved at that age you can do that within reason. Of course you have to be careful what you are doing its no good pretending you can climb Mount Everest or any of the highest Mountains in the World in the sense that you have to see a limit reach it and maybe you can overcome that limit once you have got past the first one. Also you have to maintain it all somewhat as well. Whether it is her or not it is the effort put in that counts. It is a very good idea to have a heart rate monitor and a guide so her Book must be invaluable to so many around the World. xxx Take care have a great Weekend.xxx

i think short exercise such as walking or running on a daily basis is better for you then try to cut back on portion size of foods.. but i dont agree with likking your self in the gym i went to our indoor gym to walk around there track i loved it and it made me want to walk.. and they have an exercise room and i would see so many people in there killing there self on tread mills and such and they would be all red and sweating and im think my gosh.. so i kept walking the track only every day and made friends with the other walkers and there was an older lady who i talked to she was old but had a hot body anybody would agree.. and i ask her how she looked so good. and she said right her.. walking i do it every day for a long time ago..and right then i knew i would never kill myself on a boring exercise again so now i still walk, but due to money i had to give the gym membership up so i walk outside daily and its great and im losing.. works for me..

I like working out in the gym, actually but I realize that it cost a lot of money for membership fee. So I'd be better off doing it on my own.

I think,it depends on your age.If you are young, then short, but hard exercise is useful for you.But what if you are old, say, above sixty? My friend's father is now 65.A few months back he decided to start running regularly in the evening and he implemented his decision. He used to run short distances, but as fast as he could. It would take him barely 2 or 3 minutes, and then he would return home. Thus he used to take exercise that was perhaps hard for a man of his age,but only for 2 to 3 minutes. The result was that he started to feel pain in his legs and at last he had to give up running. I think,he would not have any problem had he used to run fast that was perhaps too much for a man of his age.

I totally disagree with short and hard exercise. You will probably be just fine but I doubt if he would be able to do that for a long time. And I don't think he or she will make a good progress.

I am no expert in this topic. All I can say is that as per my experience, long durations with light workouts don't stress your muscles & you actually feel more refreshed. But, I suppose due to tine constraints, one would tend to go the short & hard way. For me, short duration high intensity exercises really tend to make me feel more stressed. I used to do short duration exercises at the gym before but it didn't work very well with me. I would do these exercises for about 1 - 2 days & then, skip the gym on the 3rd & 4th day because I was never able to recover fully from high intensity exercises. Nowadays, I go with the short & light version. And, I have actually been sucessful in going to the gym regularly... :-)

For a novice, starting with light exercise is better because his heart is not yet used to hard intensity, right?

for me, i agree on the short but hard physical exercise, because we burn more when our heart rate is faster or increases. but i usually do is, on the 1st week i do hard physical exercises like, hard cardio, and taebo, on the next week i do pilates and yoga

I think you misunderstand about calorie burning. When you are training with higher heart rate 80 - 90 % of your maximum heart rate, you are not burning fat or carbohydrate, but you are burning sugar.

The idea behind the short but hard workout is to get your heartbeat up. The heart will take longer to recover and that's a good thing if you're exercising for overall fitness and are fairly healthy. Your body keeps burning calories even after you're resting when you do intense exercise.

When you are resting, and your heart rate is still higher, this recovery time is longer meaning it was too much for the heart. If this happens often, the person will in the end experience an overtraining. In other words, he will injure himself.

In my experience steady and gentle exercise is far better than working hard. We need to listen to our body's more and not push it to extremes. There have been cases of people doing damage to themselves by pushing too hard, even athletes have caused themselves problems. Unless we have a thorough medical check, how can we know the condition of our hearts and inner organs? Only the other week, a fit football player was in the news because he collapsed with a heart attack. Apparently there was a problem that he knew nothing about. He said that he had been feeling off-colour that day - what a shame he didn't listen to his body and get himself checked out. His life won't be the same now. I know because I had a heart attack in my late 50s.. I thought that was young then, but I had an inherited blood-clotting condition, that I knew nothing about. _Derek

Depends what you want from your exercise, really. For example, if you're a bodybuilder, you want massive, impressive muscles and don't care about stamina. For that, you need to lift the heaviest weight you can possibly manage, two or three times. If you're a long-distance runner, you don't need massive muscles. You need lean, energy-efficient muscles that work well for a long time. And for that, you need to train for stamina, not strength, which means lighter exercise for a much longer period of time. If you're looking for general health, you want something in between. You need some stamina, some strength, some cardio, some flexibility... and for all those, you need a middling amount of time with a variety of exercises. There is no "better" general way to exercise. Only better ways for your specific needs.

You are very right SpikeThelobster. I think the best way to start working out is to consult a doctor who knows a lot about heart rate. Which you are gonna choose will depend on how good your heart condition is. If for example you have higher maximum heart rate, you can do the short and strenous work out. But if your maximum heart rate is low, you can't take this short and hard exercise. What is your take on this,my friend?

I can imagine that. What we want to do is bring ourselves to our limits, bring our heart rates up to 80-90%. A lot of people go walking, which great and of course is still exercise, but I think it's better to get your heart rate up higher than you do when walking or doing some low-intensity workout. Happy MyLotting!

Hi maezee, you are very active in responding my discussion.Thank for this. I think it will be me who has to ask you to be my friend (instead of waiting to added by you). What I mean is in the case of jogging or running you have to choices: 1) go full blast at your 80 -90 % of your maximum heart rate, or 2) you go slowly for longer duration at 60 - 75 % your maximum heart rate. You can choose no. 1 if you are fit and have been in regular training for many years, and you have higher maximum heart rate. You choose no 2 if your max is lower. To determine your max, you need to consult a doctor who has a treadmill. He will do the test. Thank maezee. I will add you right after this.

Personally, I think exercise is just good period. I have read that long and easy is just as beneficial as short and hard. However, I know when I really push myself I have a more difficult time recovering. I am a runner and can handle several short runs every day but the long (over 10 miles) seem to kick my butt! lol!

If we are already fit, like you for example, you can alternate your training session. Today you do the hard, the next day you do the slow but long exercise.

Well it depends on your state of health to begin with. If you are not used to exercising a lot, take it light and slowly. Otherwise you might do more damage to yourself than good. Well look at heavy weight lifters, they do short hard frequently exercise same with boxing. depends which sport or exercise you do. I wouldn't say 1 way is better than another way. Look at dancers they do longer and lighter, but also very fit! get my point? If your not sure, stop exercising when your body tells you, then go again when recovered. I think the author on this article didn't really know what he was writing to be honest..lol

That question depends on what the exercise is, but if we're talking about bodybuilding, there is no question that short and intensive hard works are better than long and light exercise. A training should be maximum 1 hour - hour and a half even that is too much. As you know the muscle grows out side the gym and the growing process will be very big with a short but hard work out. If your talking about a cardio exercise 30 minutes are enough. Whatever your workout is, it should be as much as intensive, but never too hard, because over training could be very dangerous. I hope I was useful, Good Luck :) !

You are right. But what I mean is that in the case of running workout, which is better, running full blast for a short time, running at lower intensity for longer period of time? If you take the short one, you are definitely going beyond into the red zone, nearly hitting the maximum heart rate (appoximately 85 - 95 % of your maximum heart rate), but if you take the latter one, you will probably going about your green zone (70 - 75 % of your maximum heart rate or possibly lower).

yeah, but according to me the article is correct...our body started to burn our calories after a short time of exercise....if u keep on doing slow exercise i don't think it going to work for your health muscles

The expert in her book said that types of calories burned will depend on at what heart rate you exercised. If you exercise at 55-65 % of your maximum heart rate, you burn fat. If you exercise at 70 -75 % of your max, you burn carbohydrate, and if you train close to your maximum heart rate, you burn sugar!

Yes, long and light exercise are known as cardio exercises which burns more fats. However, short, hard workouts are more explosive, achieving maximum results in shortest time. IT's beneficial for people who don't have much time. For example, we can run 10km under 50mins, and yet we feel alright, but the moment we climb ups 100 steps, we would be so breathless. See the difference between the two? One is a long, light exercise while the other is short and hard. At the end of it, those are able to climb, are sure to be able to run. BUt those able to run, are not able to climb for sure.

Hard exercises are not suitable for older people. Those exercises are intended for those area already fit and have been training for many years.

Well, I don't know. But I am curious to know which one is the best. As for me, I always do the short and hard work outs as I really want to finish the work outs fast. Long workouts tend to get through my endurance making me do shortcuts and roundabouts with the work out. So I really don't have any idea which is better. Maybe some body experts can help us out in here.

I don't really know a lot about exercise but I think short but hard is the way to go. It's been recommended to me that when working out I ought to makes short bursts of wild movement, hold it for 10 seconds, let my body recover for about 20 seconds, then rinse and repeat. You're burning more calories as your body recovers, aside from that you're also getting bigger muscles. Ofcourse, do this after a proper warm up so that your body doesn't get shocked.
