My computer was again going from slow to slower. I was advised by a renowned computer mechanic of the city to change the hard disc and reinstall a new one. I was about to do it. But one of my friends who came to know about it advised me not to replace the hard disc; rather to switch over to a new brand of antivirus device. When I told him that I was using Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 as the antivirus device for my computer, he himself came to my house and gave a practical demonstration to show the involvement of Kaspersky antivirus device in slow running of the computer. He right clicked on the icon of Kaspersky antivirus device at the bottom of the computer and then clicked on the ‘Exit’ option thus displayed. The icon of Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 disappeared from the computer which in turn was found to run fast but when Kaspersky was again brought into action, the computer was found to run slow. So, within a few days I deleted Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 from the system and again installed ‘Quick Heal’ that I had been using before Kaspersky as the antivirus device and my computer is now again running fast. So those who are using Kaspersky Internet Security as the antivirus device for their computers must keep it in mind and if they encounter any such problem like me, they must try to correct it by switching over to a new brand of antivirus device like ‘Quick Heal’. I am not campaigning for ‘Quick Heal’ but I advise it to all of you from my own bitter experience of that antivirus device. It is now up to you to take your own decision. But I am not sure what type of problem is now in store for my computer and when it would emerge. I am also not sure whether this post is going to be deleted for violation of terms and conditions of mylot. But whatever the fate of this post may be, I thought it as my duty to share it with fellow mylotters.

I was always a great fan of Norton antivirus, but a few years ago the program started to seriously affect the speed of the computer. I now use Avast antivirus, which is a free program and provides me with adequate protection without aversely affecting my computer's performance.
As for the person who suggested that you change the hard drive, I would recommend avoiding him in future.

There are loads of things that can make your computer faster... although a hard drive is a weird one... things like a better processor & more ram are the biggest helpers towards getting more speed on your computer. And then, if you know computers well enough to do those kinds of things, then you probably know software well enough, that you don't need an antivirus program. I don't have one on my computer, and I've had this computer with Windows 7 around for nearly 2 years now, and haven't gotten a single virus on it.

Perhaps increasing the RAM capacity could make it be kind of boosted up. Alternatively, you could try doing a clean-up of all that you don't need. It, in many cases, works. In case your computer is too old, you should instead start thinking about replacing it though.

Sounds like the computer place you first mentioned was trying to make a few bucks off of you. I'm glad you found a solution and knew a friend that could help you out. It's great to have computer gurus as friends!!

Hello there.
I'm currently using a different antivirus program that most of us here in myLot. As far as my experience goes with this antivirus, I never encounter any slow running problem except when I open so many program at once or my laptop is heating up.
The antivirus program that I use is COMODO Internet Security. The free package come with antivirus and internet security program. I've been use the program for more than one year and it gives me no problem at all.
Anyway, a slow computer isn't usually cause by a hardware malfunction. So you should have check your installed software first. There was once I had the problem and I uninstalled a software I recently installed and to my surprise the software is the cause for the problem. You're lucky your friend knows more about computer problem than that technician.
Happy myLotting! :)

Thanks for you advice. There were many reasons might cause the computers of ours to run slow. Sometimes, it might be the amount of files we stored in our hard drive is overloaded, and redundancy also can be the cause of it. Also, the memory can also be the problem. Antivirus software can also the other. Hopefully, in the near future, we don't have to worry about all those problem since the cloud computer concept might be the greatest one and convenient one for all of us.

Installing some new software might make your computer really slow. Especially for antivirus. For me, I still stick with Avast. Because I felt that any other well known antivirus brand only make my computer slow.
We also need to read the minimum equipment requirement for the new software. Unless we always have new hardware.
Here, We are not campaigning a software, but sharing our experience in using a software.
