Since a year ago in May when I ate pancake syrup on my pancakes and almost died from a semi diabetic coma, I have tried really hard not to fall off the wagon so to speak. But lately my sweet tooth cries out oh come on one little dish of ice cream cannot hurt you and the little conscience man sits on my shoulder and whispers" do not listen to that keep away from that stuff. You are a diabetic." your take fellow mylotters is it possible to just occasionally have one small dish of ice cream?I do not want to endanger my health again.

I have not had my blood suger tesrted in a while. I probaly should but right now I am dealing with the acid reflex I have! I have not given up chocolate completely! I am having a hard time not eating after 8 pm! I have not tried to sleep on an incline yet and I really should! Some mornings, like today, where bad! Some days I feel bloated alot and it is has been more of a challenge to eat better! I am sure if I could lose some weight the acid relex would be better! My doctor even said that when I saw him two weeks ago! I have an upward battle! Alot more then I thought it would be! I need to keep on working on it! So much of why I feel crappy I am sure has to do with the acid relex! So amny people have it and I am on the list now!

blue65packer, this discussion is ironic, as ice cream after supper was what caused 90% of my episodes of reflux. I can eat it now, though, but only a small portion. Really for me it was any combination of fat and sugar together, too late in the evening. Ibuprofen made me have it as well. They say that if you will sleep on your left side it is harder for the stomach acid to come up your esophagus. Too bad I sleep on my right side. Yes, you will feel better when you get your reflux in control

hi blue65packer. you really should have a yearly check up for diabetics. I had irritabl bowel sydrome and acid re flex too b ut was on meds for both and was completely cured. as for IBS it wa s stress and once I removed ninety nine per cent of stress I had neither IBS or acid reflex. now I am just a diabetic and feel grea as long as I keep my blood sugar stable and not high.

Hey granny, Here I am again, better not to eat any food rich of sugar or sweet foods. It will harm you and your health. Better keep away from those stuff. If I were you, don't stare on those foods because it will trigger yourself to eat.

A small dish if you've had a low carb meal probably wouldn't be too bad. Try to have yourself tested before to make sure you don't start with really high blood sugars.

hi Elicbxn there one thing I did right when coming here I opted to keep my own diabetic testing su pplies and do my own testing three or four times a day . that way I know if I dare eat anything like that dish of ice cream. bu t I found on the days the care taker who pays attention t o us diabetics is off if I do take the ice cream or sherbet I do run high not bad likt the pancake sugar but in the 190 to 2 00 range which really is not good for ones body. so again I hear that doctor and know I have to be smart and live happy or stupid and maybe die unexpectedly.

This is something you need to talk to your doctor about, because every person is different. My daughter's friend was diagnosed when she was about 18, and since I had a sister who had it, I thought she could no longer have sweets, but according to her mom, they don't say that, because it is better for her to get a little something, rather than take it away and deprive her, causing her to possibly binge on it. But if your situation is serious enough that even a small scoop will hurt, then I would tell you "no" and try to find another alternative.
• United States
19 Apr 12
Ok Hatley, that is what my sister had and if that is the case, you better not go off your diet or I'll have to come after you No, seriously though, please try not to, I watched my sister, who has a sweet tooth like I do, struggle trying to stay on her diet and the times she'd eat a brownie or something and when I mentioned it, (I was only a teenager at the time) she would tell me she'd be fine. Well she wasn't and she only got worse and to the point that regardless of what she ate, her sugar levels yo-yo a lot. So take care of yourself, you're an important part of this community and many people are concerned about you.

Hatley aunty: do you take seedless grapes occasionally-- they are tasty and am not really sure whether we can take it as possible diabetics. I remember to have read somewhere we can take small quantities - may be four five seedless grapes per day. what is your experience/view, aunty?

oh my gosh ravi yes I can eat twenty seedless grapes and they will not raise my blood sugar as long as they are figured in with the other carbs I eat. I really am trying to be a good diabetic and not take silly chances . the one thing about fruits like grapes they are filling too so you do not want more.good idea.

I think also that if you were to have your ice cream at noon while you still have time to burn it off before the end of the day it might be alright. How often do you test your blood sugar? If you test multiple times a day you might let your sugar be your monitor, telling you if you can have some ice cream.

hi rosekitty and Garden gerty I do test three times a day and I do pay attentionto the r eading. so if I am running low an d am given a treat I can afford it but if I am normal or not high but above normal I opt for the sugarfree ice cream or jello or apple sauce unsweetened. I am really not going to take chances again.

Yes, it is possible to have ice cream while diabetic. First of all, unless your blood sugar is sky high and completely uncontrolled, a certain number of carbs can be figured into your daily diet and can include such a treat. Secondly, you can get your doctor to approve the occasional ice cream treat and send a note to your living center so they know you're permitted to include it in your diet. Finally, there are very good sugar-free ice creams out there that you might be able to buy and stash for the occasional treat. If they can serve you sugar-free jello, they can serve you sugar free ice cream.

I can have jello or unsweetened applesauce which is okay or raw watermelon or canteloupe which is always good so have some options to stray awy from rich ice creams and heavy rich desserts but sometimes I just long for it lol.

Thought of you tonight as I had some "no sugar added" ice cream at the local diner. I've bought it before, too, and I wanted to tell you about it. If you like peanut butter cups, I think you'll like this. It's called Moose Tracks and maybe they'd let you buy some and put it in the kitchen. You can buy it in the pint or in the half-gallon. It's really not bad at all and tastes pretty rich. There are miniature peanut butter cups in it and swirls of crispy chocolate throughout the ice cream. I hope you get a chance to try it. I'm sure you'll like it. Check with your doctor to make sure, but I think he'd approve.

I can't even imagine have diabetis and not being able to eat my treats as I like to. And icecream is high on my list. I really don't know what I would do. I will eat their hard as a brick sugar free fat free ice cream as I can pour hot coffee over it and it tastes good that w a y.I have learned if I give in to o ne temptation I find myself in trouble so its not worth it.I feel great and aim to stay that way now.

How about getting a bit creative with your vanilla ice cream(the sugar free one); Add a few drops of vanilla extract,or a chopped mint leaf,or what ever you would like to enhance the taste without harming you.

yes. this sort of a thinking is common among people like us. I have been classified as probable diabetic. so i am supposed to avoid. but when i go for marriage parties I do indulge in sweets - however normally no to ice cream. because it causes throat problems and wheezing problems also. In your age, you can take once in a while in small quantities - 50 gm ice cream and not 100 or more. ok. but once a person starts taking he/she cannot resist the temptation for taking more and more.

Hatley aunty -- you have told the right thing. We know it is not good. But still we take it occasionally to satisfy our desire. yesterday I took papaya fruit which is supposed to be good even for diabetics. But I took it straight from refrigerator and that caused a lot of coughing yesterday night. So I threw the balance papaya into dustbin today morning. I have decided to take papaya which is not at all cold only hereafter. Do you take seedless grapes occasionally?

Hatley aunty: In USA fruits are costly. Mangoes especially are very costly and they are sour in taste. Apples are OK in USA. Apart from that watermelons are nice to eat. I simply like papayas -- some of them taste sweet --I do not know how--though they do not have sugar in them. I am told it is good for health and recommended for diabetics.

I have not weighed lately and I am still pretty overweight too.I am down to 193 which is still way too much my goal is 150 then if I can get there, take off ten more pounds and and keep it at 140 thats my goal. Oh yes, maybe once a while- Noo, only once i would tell you Hatley ma'am! :). Oh, okay it all depends on the level of sugar you have.If it's going to be below 160,maybe yes, then once you could have it. Why can't you try out some sugar-free icecreams that are available in the markets? (i guess it would be in Walmart)-the chapman's or something?I guess people say it is good.My cousin always has it when she is tempted to eat those icecreams.Ah!She is one diabetic patient-most of my family members in that case i would say. They all have coffee and tea without sugar?Oh my gawd! How do they drink it?I wonder..That's just going to be soooo difficult. So is it like that for you as well? And if it is going to be above 200,then ma'am i would suggest you not at all to look at the icecream-we all would be happy to see this old ma'am coming aroung and commenting and posting discussions rather than shooting up with the problem of diabetes and being in the hospital or so..We never would want it.Maybe you could control your tongue then. It's just going to be so easy. Please follow what the doctor has said you.If he says "NO",then it's always going to be better on your part to avoid those. We would all want you being healthy, rather than you enjoying your life for a while eating those mouth melting icecreams and suffer for a while as well (OH i never did want to mention about these sufferings- you would be healthy okay?) God bless you! And "Do take care of your health."

It does taste good that way. or take jello or unsweetened apple sauce as these will not raise my blood sugar levels.

I do hope it is and today I gaved in and had a beautiful cinnamon bun. I haven't had bread or much startch for five weeks now and have lost 11 ounds but another 20 or 19 to lose. I did so enjoy it though. I think f you test yourself and cut down on something else then it may be all right to indulge in a treat occasionally. Ask a nurse or your Dr. I think it would depend on your sugar levels in your blood. Many blessings. I am doing okay - just waiting on a date.

Hi Grandma Hatley, it is indeed a pity that people with diabetics can't consumed quite a lot of sweet and delicious dessert. My mom is also a diabetics and she had been on the track for many years. She is on a diet but do consumed a little of sweet dessert whenever she felt want to faint. But, she always make sure that she don't consume too much of sweet which can cause her life. It is depending on the situation. If you feel very weak and want to faint, it is alright to consume a little sweet. But, always make sure to consume plenty of plain water after that, to flush away those unwanted sweet from your body.

Dear Mrs Hatley, nobody's asked whether you're on insulin or not, because the answers are different for each case. If you're not on insulin, you're entirely dependent on diet control and you can't afford these treats unless you're prepared to put up with insulin injections (I had a heparin injection in the stomach once, because I suspected I might be developing a DVT, and it wasn't pleasant - the daughter of a pastor of mine suddenly developed Type I at the age of 19, and I feel for her). If you're on insulin, you can perhaps increase the dose slightly to handle the extra sugar; but if you're not, be thankful, it's a real pain, missing out on ice cream is a small price to pay. Yoghurt is lovely, and, frozen, it really doesn't taste unlike ice cream - I used to have it in the Royal Marsden Refectory when working at the old Chelsea Hospital - but you may lose out on the acidophilus/bifidus if it's frozen and supposed to have been live.

I think you can eat occasionally one scoop of ice cream only that it is sugarless or absolutely no sugar for diabetics. You need to minimize eating more carbohydrates because it might receive bad effects to your health. Just be careful what you are eating.
