What?? say that again?
international news network CNN placed Pacquiao beside Jose Rizal under the national heroes category in an infographic summarizing basic Philippine facts
saw this article on yahoo and well... i raised an eyebrow ( well i tried to raise an eyebrow i just don't know how to) see, CNN, i have nothing against Pacman but him as national hero side by side Jose Rizal is still not fair..or right. I mean Rizal is incomparable for me.
what do you think fellow Filipinos?

I also read the yahoo new report and I share the sentiment of the people who commented there. I think we should take the claim of CNN very lightly. Obviously, there are doing a special ion the Philippines and possibly, because Pacquiao is the most famous Filipino in our present time, they equaled him to Rizal, which is another famous Filipino known worldwide. Personally, they based it on popularity and not really on the essence of being a hero. (The recent VIlma-Nora-Dolphy national Artist issue comes to mind).
Anyway, I don't want to judge CNN because even international news channels gets screwed up,e specially if you are doing a material on a country that hasn't been in their news unless it's nitty and gritty.
I understand that there are some people who regard Manny as a hero, national or not. It's their opinion and I respect that. But personally, my opinion may differ from theirs. I wish Manny all the success in life and i hope I can also emulate it too but I think I would be more proud of myself if I did it on my own.
For me, Manny is a good example like Rizal but it depends on the person on what standards they have for a hero. Rizal is our 'default' national hero (no law stating that he is the national hero but almost everyone consider him as such). I don't want to compare since both men lived in different times but I thunk Rizal will still enjoy the honor given to him for a long time. Maybe another 200 years, if the youth can still appreciate him...

This is one of the most idiotic thing I've ever heard, they don't compare a National Athlete to a National Hero. how about turning their actors into all time American heroes? this is just wrong and i don't think CNN doesn't understand the difference of it. unfortunately, i will NOT recognize that instead just known manny as a National Athlete.

@Letran i do agree with you here, I do admit that Manny did bring our country fame but then he does not compare still to what Rizal did back then.. it isn't just the same at all..
Even though they will live on the same generation or time or era.. it is not the same still..

Well, guys, I'm no fan of Pacman, nor I am a fan of boxing and sports, altogether. But, I do believe he did much to make the Filipino race proud. Of course, we no longer live in Rizal's time, where heroes have to die defending our country. This modern times, it's about how someone raises tha banner for his country, in their own way. Even, OFWs are called living heroes of the modern days - because they have helped a lot in our economy. I think Pacman deserves some salutation, in his own right.

I think Pacman should learn how to discern on things. Some politicians are really just riding on to Pacman's popularity.

Hello Jazel_juan, NO ONE DICTATES whom should be our national HERO except the Filipino People and the National Historic institute! they have no concept of understanding our history. He's an entertainer and not a patriotic warrior who fights for the freedom of our country! unfortunately he is not that kind of a hero compare to Jose Rizal! CNN is nothing more than just taking along for a ride to think we will be persuaded.

This also caught me by surprise. Have not seen it in the news though. Maybe the international bodies took our gesture over pacquiao as treating him like a national hero. But he's a hero for me in a way, specially now that he is a full pledged Christian. But we cannot still compare him to our National hero Rizal.

Pacman as national hero is a bright move, but there's one thing that will put him down; his being a womanizer once. He himself accepted this fact.

I don't think he can really compare to Rizal either- but he is a hero for me since he serves as an inspiration to Filipinos.. being a hero doesn't really mean you have to die for your country.. it also means that you did something great for it, you made a good change...like the unsung heroes- ofws.

What?! PACMAN as national hero?Naaaa. I dont think so. Pacman did not achieve what Dr. Jose Rizal have done for the Philippines. Jose Rizal sacrifice many things in his life and devoted his whole life to the country but Pacman is not even half way of what Jose Rizal did.
