Supermoon

supermoon - This so-called "supermoon" appears extra big and extra bright.

The “Supermoon”, the biggest and brightest moon of the year, was visible in the Philippines under clear to partly cloudy skies at 6:29 p.m. last night (Sunday). The scientific community calls this perigee-syzygy. This phenomenon occurs when the moon is closest in its orbit to the earth, making it bigger than the average full moon. According to Wikipedia, Perigee is the point at which the Moon is closest in its orbit to the Earth, and syzygy is a full or new moon, when the Earth, the Moon and the Sun are aligned. Have you seen this last night?

I missed witnessing the supermoon phenomenon last Sunday and wish to thank you all fellow myLotters for bringing this natural happening to the fore. The phenomenon is well explained and let's hope no superstitious beliefs coming from less informed people will attach lurid meaning to it. Let's move on as planet earth and the moon moves.

Hi nicanorr! I agree with you. Let's hope and pray that less informed people would not attach any meaning to this phenomenon so as to avoid panic among us.

The super moon did help us a lot last night. We did not have electricity since a lighting struck the transformer but the moon was really bright to give some light in the dark. I was actually surprised when I went to the store and noticed that the sky was brighter and I remembered the news of the super moon. It was in full view and I am just glad that it decided to show last night when we needed it most.

That's great news yahnee! I mean, it would have been more difficult for you guys if it was cloudy or if the moon did not shine that bright.

Yeah that 's true. the whole barangay was in darkness and only the moon helped the workers walk the streets on their way home. No one was prepared for the power outage and they did not have any flashlights. When I put off the candles before going to bed, the moon was still shining brightly and I can still see it from the window curtains.

I saw the "Supermoon" Sunday night. I thought it was incredible. I used binoculars; and it looked like it was right in my face. I really was impressed by seeing the moon in its big and beautiful glory. It is so high, up in space, but yet almost down to earth depending on how you look at it. I think the best way to see it would be through binoculars are a telescope. I hope to see it again very soon.

I was really looking for it last night. Despite the fact that I was traveling, I arrive at around 6 in the evening. Unfortunately, in the area where I was, the moon was not that visible since it was covered with clouds. Sad to note, I lost the chance of seeing the supermoon. Lucky for those who had the chance of seeing it.

Hi jpso138! Many did not really have that opportunity of viewing the phenomenon due to cloudy skies. Well, better luck next time my friend.

I can't give you the exact size as I do not have the means to do so. One thing for sure, it is much bigger than the usual size of the full moon.

It looked so beautiful here in California. My boyfriend and I loved the "Super Moon". It looked great where he lives because he lives in the desert, and he lives where there is a big open sky. If we had an observatory in that area, then it would have been so much nicer to see.

It was brighter here. Bright enough to light up my whole bedroom and make it hard to sleep. It wasn't any bigger though, at least not that I noticed.

I didn't saw it. I thought it was 11:30pm as what my parents have heard on the news. But the moon was really bright last night, that was what I have noticed.

My parents heard it wrong then. Was it really nice and big? I really love watching rare phenomenon but I always don't get the chance to see it

It wasn't very big from where I was..but it sure was very bright. I went out to check if our front porch's light was left on by our house helper, because it was very bright. I was amazed to see that all those light came from the moon above. It was a wonderful sight. But I have seen a much bigger moon, before, although the light was a little dull. They also talked about meteor showers...did you guys see that?

Yeah! I didn't know it was a supermoon. But, I noticed that it was not very dark last night, and I suspected a full moon. Looked out the window and there it is ~ beautiful as ever. I always love a full moon, and had I known it was a super moon last night, I'd have gazed a little longer!

I saw it here in US Saturday night. It was very beautiful and bright. It was the brightest here at 11:30 p.m. so we all stayed up on the beach and watched for it.
