Like It Or I Kill You!

OK.......maybe that's a little extreme, but what's up with everybody being so obsessed with getting "Likes?" And some people go through extremes to get people to "Like" stuff that isn't even likable. Here's an example I went through a few weeks ago: A friend of mine posted a song by a local band from his neck of the woods with the comment "Like and help these guys out" So I gave it a listen.....it was a Death Metal band......now, I'm a metal head from way back but I can't stand that raspy, guttural singing that I guess is supposed to sound like a demon dog from hell with an empty food bowl....and you can't even make out 2 words. So I said, "I would've "Liked" it but I can't stand that raspy, guttural singing so I didn't." To which he replied, "Yeah, but it supports the local music scene, so go ahead and click "Like." (Now mind you, he lives on the east coast and I live in Las Vegas......so it doesn't support my local music scene!) Anyways, I told him, "Now you're just trying to change my concept of the word "Like".....why would I "Like something if I don't like it?" To which he replied "Just "Like it anyways!" So, not wanting to get into an online debate over the word LIKE, I just moved on........without liking it. I've even seen websites that offer, for a fee, to get you "Likes" Is it just me, or if you want people to "Like" something...shouldn't it be something people "LIKE?" Do you just "Like" stuff because someone told you to......or are you old fashioned like me and only "Like" things because you actually Like them?

Yeah, I'm old like you - oh wait - that was old fashioned, wasn't it? Oops. I do pretty much only like something I genuinely like. Sometimes I simply forget to. And, there are those things that are totally unlikable, but relevant where the like isn't that you like what the post is about but like that the information has been shared for others to be aware. Those are the ones where people often say "why isn't there a dislike button?" Someone loses their job or gets a negative diagnosis - you like it, but you don't like it. Liking it in that case more means that you've read it and acknowledge the message, but really few people hit the like button in those cases. Too analytical? Just remember, that word DOES begin with "anal".

Well, Sconi - I can't see you being one to turn down the opportunity for a poke or two, ya know? And, KK. My great-grands aren't in school yet, so I doubt they're boasting about much more than winning a game on the Xbox. Of course, the one still in diapers is probably just beginning to giggle about passing gas.

I'm just as puzzled as you are, I think demanding likes and letting the numbers of likes determine how you feel about yourself... well that's just pathetic. I think that you're perfectly right and people should only "like" things that they actually LIKE. Of course, I don't really spend much time on facebook, and I spend even less time on it the more other people seem absorbed by it. *whispers* I think Facebook is taking control of people's minds and soon no one will be able to survive without "likes"!

I like this discussion you started and I like the responses. I wouldn't 'like' your video. My apologies. I hope this doesn't cause you to not 'like' me because I am voicing my true opinion. It's kinda like your discussion that's saying you don't want to 'like' something if you don't like it. That's the way I'm feeling.!

Ouch! I think I'd be in distress if I did either of those! Thanks for 'liking' that I care!

Well, except I will "like" if I truly LIKE. But yeahhhh, otherwise, I might "like" if the price is right (oh, I sound like a slave to points! )

The only time I will "like" "against my will" is when I will get points for doing so on another earning site. Or, I might put in my "like" for a friend in a Facebook photo contest for the most likes - the most likes wins. But in a normal Facebook post - eh - it just seems like a popularity contest - I'm not going to "like" if I don't want to.

I think that with Facebook they should also have a Dislike button and a Maybe button. I don't expect everyone to love or like what I love or like, and if they think that I am going to love everything that they love or like, then they are just fooling themselves. I heard this new wanna-be "wish she were that great" singer on Facebook that my friend had us check out, and she sounded horrible, and I rightfully told him so. Her voice sounded like trash, and from what I heard she was a young woman who married a rich man just so that she could get famous. Let's face facts: If you stink at singing, then you stink and no amount of money is going to fix that. Yes, Facebook needs a Dislike button.

Yeah... but I don't get too many people asking me to like something - probably because they already know I won't if I don't...

I don't get too many people that actually ask me......but when I do I check it out, weigh the pros and cons, and THEN decide if I actually Like it or just move along...

lol. what a trip. you are so right. facebook has redefined alot of common everyday words. like the term, "friend". not everyone on fb is my friend. i don't even many of my friends. what fb should start doing is changing their "like" button to a "follow" button. change the term "friends" to audience (unless they are really your friends). facebook is certainly a trip, but what's even more a trip is it's followers.

Actually....for the majority of people on there, "Friends" should be changed to "opponents" or "game mate."

Yes..Facebook is so wrong when it displays the names of people who like it. Obviously, others dont. So indirectly facebook is creating differences between friends and relatives! Anyway, who likes facebook.. I dont. :)

yeah people always say like this to give to the poor and those things that if you'll like, a money will be given to have an operation..There's also that every like will make hungry children decrease..It's really irritating on how people do anything just to have many likes..I don't really "like" things in facebook if i know that it's not really helpful to anyone..But if it's for projects, then i might like it.. :)

Yeah......it's the same as those pictures and statuses that people want you to share to wipe out cancer.......I don't think Liking or Sharing a picture has any direct impact on finding a cure for cancer, feeding the starving children of the world, or ridding Whoville of the Grinch.

Hello sconibear, I like that you did not like the post which is not really likeable in your opinion If I were in your shoes,I wouldn't bother liking it too Another thing which I notice about facebook like is that it is now being used for online contests. I am not sure if you have already encountered that. But here in our country, it is a fad. People would post something on their wall asking people to like it so that they can win some contest. They are turning it into popularity contest.

Yeah.....only problem is, some of those contests where you supposedly win something, aren't even real.

Like (thumb up) or + (plus) in Mylot, could make someone proud getting as much as thumb up. It also mean that we actually promote it to our friends or anyone who see our profile. Thats why I have multiple account in facebook to deal with the like problems.

I don't like the thought of paying a web site to like everything you post, that is beyond the extreme. It sounds mentally insane in fact. Who cares if something I post doesn't get "liked", most of my friends on my FB are just online friends who are only online at various other times than when I post half the time, and some posts get missed anyways. Oh well, if you didn't like the music then why do you have to feel forced to. Thats not right.
