Hello all,
I'm working on a new story and I have a request for you all.
I need a name that a 5 year old girl would give to a Gray Wolf. I will attach a picture of the wolf that mine will look like. It's not 100% that I will be using this wolf's image, I may use a wolf that is white with yellow eyes. So just picture either/both of them when you think up names. and if you have a names that are specific for the seperate wolves, let me know!
Thanks in advance for all your help!

You already thought of the one I was thinking of - Wolfy. But I also thought of "Bright Eyes" and "Star". It could depend a little on their first encounter and how she sees him. I like the one in the picture. The white one with yellow eyes might be more unique but I think he would appear more menacing and maybe less likable to your readers. Just a thought...

Did you mean the white wolf with yellow eyes would look more menacing? Or the grey ome in the picture? I'll add the picture of the white wolf too, just to give you guys an idea at the 2 wolves in the running! lol
Bright Eyes is cute, I could see a little girl calling a wolf that. But I think that name might work better with the white wolf?
Thank you! :)

Lol okay! I've been asking a few people I know which wolf they like better, it's real neck and neck right now. haha.

Ya, I meant the yellow eyes might look more menacing, but in the picture he looks ok. I still like the other one though.

I forgot to mention the wolf is going to be a male. It is much more likely that a male wolf in the wild would be alone.
I like the name Grayson, but I'm not sure whether or not that is a name a 5 year old would come up with.
Moon is good, I think a small child would name a wolf that purely out of association. I'll keep that name in mind!
Thank you!

It would depend on how much that 5 year old has been taught and if he or she can grasp the idea of names @LilyoftheThorns

For the grey wolf, what about Ashes?
The white wolf might be named Snowball.
As an either/or name, Fluffy.
My nieces, a little bit older, like Disney stuff and Winnie the Pooh. So, Elmo, Eyeore, Piglet, Aladdin,
They currently have a cat named Jasmine. When the older one was younger, she wanted to name her baby sister Rainbow!

I was considering doing a Disney or cartoon name, but I'd like one that was associated with wolves, and I haven't been able to come up with one yet.

You thought of one!!!! Yay!!! lol
My sister and I loved Balto when we were younger! That might work. I think a 5 year old would name an animal after a movie character.
Thanks Trace!

Lol I don't hate you.
I wish I had a 5 year old that i knew and i could see if they knew the difference between a wolf and a dog.
But along your lines, if they would know the difference, she may just call him "Wolfy" lol.
Thanks!

You're right, I forgot some important details! lol
The wolf is an old male (of course I'm not sure the little girl would know how old he is). She doesn't know the wolf long at all, she names him pretty quickly after "finding" him. She is lost in the forest when they cross paths.
Thanks MsTickle!

hi!
when i first read your post about a name for a gray wolf, my first thought had been grayson. i'm into wolf/werewolf stories recently and i've come across the name a few times. but i doubt if a 5 year old can easily pick it up. smoky for gray and snowy for white are very good names a child can make easily... as given by responses above.
i'd like to add ash as a name for a gray wolf. or silver perhaps, if the background is bright a gray wolf can have hints of silver. or shadow perhaps, if the background is dim, a gray wolf can look like a shadowy figure.
as for the white wolf, if it runs fast... lightning or flash. blanco is spanish for white. maybe a child can pick this up in kiddie bilingual educational programs. depending on the character of your story.
if it had been a female wolf with yellow eyes, i would have suggested amber. however it's male... hehe

i must have read hundreds of wolf/werewolf stories but has not yet come across "moon" as a name. even if the moon goddess has been mentioned several times in the stories. i may also think the moon is more associated to a female, just like the sun is to male. well, just my opinion. hehe it is your story so you can make a spin on it in any direction you want. lol
if i'm going to be playful... and if i was a child of 5, i'd name a wolf (regardless of color) howie. like a howling wolf in the distance. and it sounds more like a pet name and child-friendly. hehe

I just thought all wolves are associated with the moon (I think they def. are to children) so that's why I was considering it. And it's good you haven't come across it yet! It could be unique to my story! lol
But I do like you idea with howie. Except I think 5 year olds pretty much have speech down, so I think maybe they would be able to go all the way and call it "Howlie." What do you think?

Thank you for your response! I like the name Grayson too, but yeah, not sure a little kid would come up with it. I'm also working on a werewolf story, but it's kind of on the back burners right now, so I decided to start this one.
I like Ash too, that may be a name she could come up, maybe her dad says the word earlier in the story. Sitting around the fireplace? Haha, I may work it in. Have to see what other people come up with!
What do you think about the name "Moon" that someone mentioned above?
Thank you!

Millertime took my suggestion, as I tried to put myself as a 5 y/o...I asked my 10 y/o and he said Silver, until he saw the picture and when I asked him if he were 5, what would he name him, and he said either Elmo or a tellytubby name..But he only said that I guess because he thinks all 5 y/o watch tetllytubby and sesame street..

Haha Elmo! I was trying to think if there is a wolf character in any childrens books that a 5 year old would know, but so far have come up blank.

Unfortunately the only wolf characters in children's books are not good, like "the big bad wolf" in Little Red Riding Hood, or the Three Little Pigs...

Yeah that's all I could think of too, and I don't want her to name him after a bad wolf lol

I like the name Alpha. I also like Grace, Hope, Artemis, Apollo, and Zeus. Greek, Roman and Norse names usually work for wolves.

Yeah some of thos names are good, but the only issue with them is I'm not sure they are names a 5 year old girl would come up with. I'm not quite sure they are familiar with greek and norse Gods.
Thanks for your response though!

Those names definitely make sense! lol. I will keep them in mind and see what other people come up with.
Thank you very much for your input!
I don't remember if I mentioned this in my original posting or not, but just to let people know, the wolf is a male. lol

A 5 year old girl. Hmm...
Wolfie seems very likely.
Maybe Fang.

It's funny that you mention Fang. There is also a dog in my story, and I had Fang down as his name. Haha.

That is kind of funny, but also fitting. I know as a 5 year old, any dog time animal was likely to be called fang. lol

what do you think of the name Garu? its the Japanese word for wolf, you can just customize the spelling to make it western sounding. The name Garu sounds cool, youthful, exotic and badass. I am planning to name my next dog Garu because that name sounds very warrior like.In a way wolves are like the warriors and hunters of the woods. It really fits well.

I didn't know that word before (you learn something new every day! )
While I do like who the name sounds, I'm just not sure a 5 year old girl would come up with it. Unless of course their first language is japanese, but thats not the case with the girl in my story.
But I have been considering the very simple, very logical name of "Wolfy." Haha. It does sound like a name a little girl would give to a wolf.
Thanks Capt!

A 5 y/o watching anime? Even when my teenager got into anime, my youngest never watched it, and at 10, he still doesn't. I guess it depends on the household too...
