Have you ever tried to write a novel?

As a kid, I tried. But it was futile. I just didn't have any idea what to write, or how to write but my years, and the experiences I've gained in life has changed me enough that maybe I should try it again.
The only problem is that I have no idea what to write about. If only an idea would grow in my mind so that in a day, I would have something, some idea. Then I could spell out the details, such as the characters, the story line and so on. I could build an outline then start to flesh the story out.
I would of course have a timeline. Depending on the story, the time line would be a specific amount of time. So that if a story I wanted to tell would span 10 days. I could then start to write the story, paying close attention to the interweaving of the characters, what the were doing, and how their actions affected the other characters.
But that's just me dreaming (unless I can come up with a story line).
What do you think?

There are stories all around, just grab one and write it out. A lot of my ideas come from dreams, and life experience. Write down your life story and add the elements to make it enjoyable for all readers. You may have to write it out how you wished things happened or make certain things seem bigger than they really are, but thats what makes a good writer, creating a great story out of the most basic details.

well sir, looks like we were on the same page with that one. i think thats what all writers do when they come up with these books. So as you can see..you cant lose going that route.

My problem is disciplining myself to actually complete a story. Writing a book ios a long drawn out process, which requires to cover every single detail to make sure it all fits together. My thought process jumps from one direction to another, and it's hard to finish a story like that.

well just try thinking of one event that is interesting in your life and write everything you can remember about it. Dont worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation, or appearance..jus write. Once you do that, then go back and fill in the blanks. Thats when you take out and add certain issues. you can even try short stories. but if you decide to try it, i would love to know how it turns out.

You need to try to write again.
I've been writing since I was a kid. I made some stories (we can say they're novels because they're quite long. Unfortunately, there are some lack in my writing. I'm doing it just for my hobby though. You too, don't need to rush, let it just flow. Look around and maybe you'll get an idea to write.

Yes I have and I am in the middle of revision and hoping to submit it soon.
I don't have a problem with a story line, I usually look at people and events around me and I of course change what happens to make it more interesting and the best part is when some crazy idea hits me, and I add it.
If you have even a little bit, I suggest you just write and keep writing, forget about grammar and spelling or if what you write is clear, those are details you work out in the revision.

I think the only thing you need to know now is to start. What is really important is the passion to do it. I believe with the way you are saying right now, you have it. So start it out and I'm sure everything will flow as you continue. A Chinese philosoper alway said, a journey to a thousand miles, begins with a single step. Perhaps all it takes is that single step...

I attempt NaNoWriMo every year, and occasionally try JulNoWriMo too. I've never actually finished one though....I lack follow though.
I can often thing of great (to me) concepts for a novel, but I can't think of the major plot points to push the story forward.

You know, for me coming up with a story and a full timeline was never very difficult. I've been writing long manuscripts since I was 12. Finishing a draft is really easy for me, but polishing and editing tend to really bore me. I'm a huge reader, always have been, and I've loved writing almost as long. I like to write YA fantasy, probably because that's what I typically read. I love stories about good vs. evil battles and epic quests to save an imaginary world.

I wrote a little story when I was young about dolphins I think, I was 10-11 something like that and my parents were bugging me because some genius kid in my country appeared on TV an started saying that he thinks all kids should have hobbies like writing, painting, and other stuff. So I got mad and I got busy :D. I wasn't long, I don't even remember if I showed it to my parents. After a while I threw it out. I was satisfied that I did it. It was just to make a point, for myself I think more than for my parents.
Anyway, last year I wanted to read a fantasy book, and I couldn't find one. A thought came to my mind: "Why don't I write a book I would like to read ?" And without time to convince myself with 1000 reasons that it's not a good idea I started. I had something in mind, I changed it while I was writing, and now it's almost finished. In the meantime I found a publisher who said that after he reads he will publish it( and I'll make sure the book will be worthy enough).
It's very exciting, I really like writing, it's fun, it's like reading a story in my head, imagining what will happen next, imagining the scene and then trying to describe it as thorough as possible.
I read some book in my life but not that many, can't say I have a brilliant vocabulary, but word I may have only read once in my life just pop in my head when I need them, I also learned how to write properly a lot of words.
I don't think people lack imagination when it comes to writing, I think they lack discipline, at least I am, sometimes I struggle with myself to sit down on my chair and start writing and once I do, not a single time was I unhappy that I did.
My advice, think of something you would like to read about and start, don't wait until you have the whole story prepared in your had because that way you will never begin you novel. A little thinking, a lot of action. My English teacher had a saying: When you want to do something you are proud of you need 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. I still think she was right.
I hope you find it in you to start writing you novel, I'm sure you'll like it.
Good luck !

I started at the age of twelve. I'm a novelist now with ten books published. You just write and write and don't spend so much time thinking. Write. Persevere. Rewrite. Edit. More editing. Publish!

I have started a novel, but I haven't been able to get very far with it at the moment. I have all of the main characters sorted out, and most of the plot, but I have only been able to write 1,100 words of it, because I just don't have the time now that I am working to be able to sit there and get the words down on paper. I am going to try and write for at least one hour each evening next month, and I will try to cut back on the amount of money that I'm spending just so that it doesn't matter if I can't earn quite as much while I am dedicating a little bit of time to my writing.

I also tried to write one in my teens, although I have already a plot in mind I gave up writing it because I kinda felt lazy even if I'm just in the introduction. ^^; I just realized that when I try to write the story I tend to get off track and story line would change drastically compared to what I really had in mind. Another thing that also hindered me from writing it was, I didn't had enough resource materials. You can't possibly write something about things you don't even know very well or never experienced first hand right? So I think I still lack those and only when the time have come that I would procrastinate no more, and when I had the patience and eagerness to do much researches, I guess that day will be the day I would start writing a novel. ^^

I really think you should go for it. I too have had a dream of being a famous author one day. I didnt have the problem of what to write about, but where to start as far as the book process. So i figured if it was something i wanted to do, i had to go for it. So i looked up online sites that dealt with publishing. so if you need any pointers on that, let me know. but as far as the writers block, what i do, i listen to other people drama, or things i have experienced in life, and then put it in my own words. Writing about things you already know, you cant go wrong. So just brain storm one day, and write down all the experiences you encountered and i guarantee, you will have that novel in no time! See ya at the book fair! lol
