I think promotion based on the "current" performance can be more justifiable and beneficial to the company as a whole in the long run. And if the other way around, promotion based on experience and tenure or service, it can positively contribute in the promotion process but taken as a "sole" basis for promotion, I think, "historical" records will be used and needs to the updated. It would be better if we supplement those with the current records or their current performance.

I think promotions based on both factors would be for the best. I think performance is important, but you also have to reward an employees loyalty as well. A person can not expect to be running a business with only a month of experience under their belt, regardless if they can produce numbers, also a person who is a seasoned veteran should not allow themselves to become so complacent that they are being outperformed by a rookie. A good employer will weigh both factors before making a decision on who to promote.

It should be, but in situations where there is a union involved promotions or pay raises increase with experience, in other cases such as sales jobs its based strictly on performance.

Hello! Seems this topic struck me today because our agency is having a what we call "re-organization" which promotions and and other positions are open. For me the performance will count much, then the length of service will my second consideration. For me what to do for a newly hired employee which is a hardworking and less supervision and shall we say can work well, compared to an old employee but he/she could not perform will on the task well. So for me performance will be my best in criteria.

hi,
the performance based promotions go well in private sectors, i feel that way,the hard working people should always be reciprocated.

Performance based on performance is perhaps the best. But there is going to be a lot of resentment in the employees. Such selections can be based on individual assessment of the employee. So there is a possibility that some people may be favoured and some ignored. So seniority based promotion is considered the safest if not the best

I guess here in my local area, performance is always prefered especially the ability to hit sales target and sales the largest amount of products being promted and such , it is very competitive to get promotion in sales department. It is always the sales people who make money for the company , and the rest are backup to support the sales people.Hence making the sales quota is important for promotion.

yes , in sales jobs promotions are based on performance, and and it should be like that, the company simply cant pay a person who's performance is nil or not up to the mark, simply because the company hired them, such jobs promotions should be strictly based on perfomance

I would choose promotion based on performance because not all people who are experienced are good in what they do. Some people who has fewer years of experience than others are more experts at what they do. Whichever way, I want to be promoted as fast as I can.

I think that promotions does come from both of these factor. When you have experience you will then (should actually) have to perform better. it takes years of experience to be better at something too, right? i mean it is possible that you are really doing well at something now but you still need to have the years to your career to put more achievements.

I would prefer a promotion based on performance. I believe you should earn a promotion with hard work. If you have shown integrity, competence, and versatility in the performance of your job duties, it is a good indication that one will accept t.he challenge of a promotion. When someone gets promoted it should be due to his or her attitude and ability

Hi,
I think every organization have their own policy of promoting their performers.
I don't really think experience only matters but overall performance, knowledge, skill and competancy are also looked up on by the management / human reource.
Senior staffs could be given promotion as that will motivate them and encourage them to train their juniors / management trainees etc.
I would be happy with the promotion in whatever way it comes..

well, after seeing all the comments , we can say that both of them matters, of course we should see the positive and negatives results of both the ends, and apply which ever is applicable..

Performance matters most for me. A skillful person will always perform well above from the rest and it doesn't need long years of service to be seen. For example, if a newly hired employee is very skillful and expert in the job field because of the knowledge and experiences he gained from his previous jobs, would it be fair if we hold his promotion just because he is a newly hired employee? An employee who has been working in the company for many years may master his own job responsibilities because it became his routine. I think there is nothing extraordinary skills with that. I like more a person who can master the work assigned to him in the short time frame. This is the reason why some employers prefer to get a new employee with high skills and proficiency and often employers are willing to give them a compensation above from the rest of their employees even to those who have been working in the company for many years.

I always believed that it should be both based on those two factors. experience is important because it helps you learn on a hands on basis while performance is equally important because your knowledge would be worthless if you do not apply it through your performance.

hello there, good day discussion starter, If you promote with experience you will be asked if the performance is good and if you promote with performance the question is if you have experienced it. So they can be the same, but to be at its best, including both are extremely advised.
