My sister-in-law has sent us a big box from Australia, filled with goodies, biscuits, canned goods , chocolates and the likes. She actually have it picked by the Freight company on the first week of April. But she said some of the goodies, might have expired on their best before dates. Indeed when it arrived some chips and biscuits have already expired on their best before dated. Nonetheless, we ate them and we noticed that chips were not really as delicious as they should be. Though, they were still edible. What’s your thoughts friends on the best before dates on food products?

Here are my thoughts on this subject. I always look at the dates and if they are exited I do not bother with them. I throw them away. And when I shop for things I always look at the dates. If it has only a few days left I don't bother buying it. I know some things might last longer then the expiration date, but I am funny about things like that.

It's good to know that you are meticulous in such aspect , inertia. That way, you prevent yourself from eating products that can bring harm to your health. Keep it up!

Yes, we have to be always careful with the products that we buy, inertia. Our health is a priority , because without good health, we will not be able to work well.

This day in age we have to be careful. I always look at the dates and tell my girl to always look at the dates when she goes shopping.

For me, I will always check the 'best before' for any foods before eat it. I will never eat something expired. It is too risk for our health.

That's good to know my friend. Health is wealth, so we should be careful of what food we take into our bodies.

no offense simplyd, but why on earth would someone send food overseas that are about to expire? Personally I would appreciate the gesture but deep down i would be slightly offended but that's just me. By the way, is there a Savemore store over there? I mention this because a friend told me to always check the expiry date of goods sold in that store because chances are those are already about to expire.

Well, Ybong, my sister-in-law explained that she started buying those goodies as early as February. Every time they would make a grocery, she would also buy some to be put in the big box to be sent eventually to the Philippines. She keeps doing that until it is full and be shipped to the Philippines. That's how she get to fill up a balikbayan box she always send to us. She remembered not having checked on the Best before date , so she cautioned us to check first, before we eat. And 3 or more of the chips indeed has expired last May 31. The rest are all okay, some to be expired on August and later. But before that date i am sure they are all already in our stomachs. But the chocolates and the canned goods have expiry dates as late as 2014!

Best before doesn't mean you can't eat it on a later date. It depends on the kind of food, the way it was stored. And how long ago it was produced. There was a time this best before date was not even used on products at all and we ate or used it as well. You seldom get sick from it, vitamines etc might get less. And if it comes to the taste of potato chips, they seldom taste equal or delicious, if the "air" is still in the bag they should taste the same.

Yes, i agree with you, my friend. That's how we interpret it too. Besides, we have our nose to smell and the tongue to taste and our eyes to see if the product is still okay. Well, 3 bags of chips were dated 2 or 3 days after its Best Before date. But the chips are still so crispy. The cheese ball though seemed a bit lacking in saltiness but was so crispy. Or maybe it's because the local version of cheese balls here in the Philippines is a bit salty.

The "Best before" date is there as a "base" date. Not all items expire that quickly. Milk however is important to use by expiration date. Baking ingredients are important too because they will not rise properly. Good Luck:-)

Well, that is what we are thinking also. We have discern for ourselves if the product is still okay to be eaten. But to be safe if the best before date was already past one week, then better throw it. I agree that when it comes to milk, it is important to stick to using it on or before the expiration date. So baking ingredients is just like milk when it comes to expiration date. I didn't know that, because i don't bake.

I heard the date on products is the longest limited date. Once the date passed, the food is to go bad. However when I ate the instant noodles over whose date, I am OK without any uncomfortablity. Whether the food over it's limited date can be eat, we can have a try. First, I will smell the food,if the food go bad, the smell would be different and smells sour or strange. Than I will taste a little part of the food. Usually I won't eat the product over the date.

That's true my friend, we have our nose to smell if it smells bad already and the tongue to at least take a little taste of it. Besides, if it is already a week after the best before date, i think we just have to give it to our local dogs.

Maybe it's not a good idea to be eating foods that have expired. I think that would explain why they were not delicious. It's a good thing nothing bad happened to you. I guess that there is a reason there is a best before date. They say that you can eat them actually a few days after, but, it's better not to take chances.

Hi SIMPLYD, I actually don't have a problem with some out of dates foods and then it depends on how out dated the food is..I think the individual should definately be aware of out dated food...fresh products, dairy products, seafoods, never use outdated....just like some outdate toiletries and cosmetics have to be checked also...just be careful...soinfs like your sister went shopping at a going out of business sale.....or something....

Actually she said, every time they go to shop groceries, they buy those food products without seeing the expiry dates. And once the big box is filled with every shopping for groceries purchases, she had them sent to the Philippines. Unfortunately, the shipping took 1 and a half months. Thus, some have already reached their best before marks. But they were still okay to eat, actually.
